General Candidate Question 1. Why is MAFA important to you? There are a lot of reasons that MAFA is important to me. MAFA, or Midwest Association of Filipino Americans, connected to me when I first heard about the conference through friends that were a part of UICs Filipinos in Alliance (FIA). I read through the mission statement and I was really intrigued by what the event had to offer. My first MAFA conference was the 2011-2012 conference at Marquette University in Milwaukee hosted by Marquettes Filipino Organization, Bayanihan. Though I did not fully understand what MAFA meant to me at the time, I gained a lot of friends through the workshops and gained a positive outlook. During the 2012-2013 MAFA conference at the University of WisconsinMadison was where I developed my perception of MAFA and why MAFA is so important to me today. MAFA is not simply just a conference or an organization. Eliseo Silvas Filipino Visual Literacy workshop left me with a great message on what the typical stereotypes and connotations are when people think about the Philippines and how we, as Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, are missing the other side of what the history of the Philippines is. I learned that there are is a lot more to Philippine history behind the current representation of the Philippines (such as the stilt houses and Emilio Aguinaldo only being depicted as a negative historical figure). The second workshop I took was the Panel featuring Regie Cabico, Rex Navarrete, and Eliseo Silva. The message that I received through the answers provided by Regie, Rex, and Eliseo was that we, as Filipinos and Filipino-Americans, are definitely more than the stereotypes and are more than capable of breaking through stereotypes as long as we have the passion and drive. The last workshop brought together different schools and organizations together to talk about common Filipino stereotypes, facts, and brought forth a whole slew of questions and interactive games that helped me to understand my own definition of what is means to be a Filipino-American. MAFA is very important to me because I have a definitive answer on what it means to be a Filipino-American in regards to spreading culture, heritage, modern aspects, and being able to channel our beliefs back towards Filipinos and the Filipino-American community. MAFA helped me realize how much I want to instill in/help other Filipino-Americans to find their own definition of what it means to be a Filipino-American. Treasurer Candidate Questions 1. What has been your biggest accomplishment/failure in respect to your PSA? What did you learn from that experience? In regards to my biggest accomplishment in respect to my PSA, I believe that my biggest accomplishment relates to the type of person I am. I regard myself to be a highly caring, compassionate, and loving individual that takes care of his friends and family. Whenever my close friends and family needed help, I would do all I could to help, especially in times where these individuals needed me the most. My PSA is UICs Filipinos in Alliance (FIA). One of the biggest things to me about FIA is the AKA Program (the Ate, Kuya, Ading Program). The purpose of the program is to have freshman, as well as new incoming FIA members, be paired with an older Ate or Kuya to help with the transition into college and FIA. The AKA program is structured around FIAmilys. FIAmilys are families that are structured exactly like a family tree so FIAmilys are structured so that an Ading not only has their direct Kuya or Ate, but also as several other indirect Kuyas and Ates that can assist in the transitioning into college and FIA. The AKA program instilled within me a sense of self. Throughout my senior year in FIA (the year that I became fully active), I instilled in not only my Adings, but many younger individuals in FIA to find and follow a profession or dream that means something to them. I am currently completing the end of my 1st year at Chamberlain College of Nursing (with about 1 year and 1 semester remaining to graduate as an RN-BSN). Overall, I am able to guide, direct, and support the younger generations of FIA to help them understand that life is worth living while being able to have a job that you love. I helped many individuals (older, in the same grade, and younger) to really think about the future that they are selecting for themselves. I helped tutor, develop study habits, and assist in the

problems of many FIA members so that they may be able to grow in their studies while at the same time attain a sense of self, gain confidence, and individuality when they do leave college and move on to the professional, working world. My biggest accomplishment is being a role-model and leader for many individuals in FIA. In regards to my biggest failure in respect to my PSA, I regret not being able run for and take up leadership positions on FIA staff. I feel that I would have been able to provide more for the upcoming younger generations of FIA while upholding a leadership position to show them that a lot of timemanagement, hard work, dedication, and passion are necessary to be a leader, friend, and student at the same time. I failed to juggle my time when I first became a college student; so while I label this as my biggest failure, this can also be seen as a success for me because over my freshman, sophomore, and junior year I was able to grow as an individual who is able to now maintain school and studies, positions in different organizations, be an active FIA member, as well as still be able to make time and hang out with friends and family.
2. At some point, MAFA may need consistent income to expand the organization, what ideas do you have that can help MAFA overcome this potential need? MAFA Board 2012-2013 did not have a treasurer. The distribution of treasurer duties was split between members and I believe delegation of treasurer tasks to the other board members led to many struggles and difficulties. Without having a set treasurer, the distribution of treasurer duties can lead accomplishment of treasurer tasks and responsibilities that meet a minimal margin. I have many ideas that can help MAFA overcome the need for consistent income to expand the organization. Of course, assuming the treasurer role and responsibilities behind treasurer are a must to maintain optimal consistent income, but there need to different methods of income flow to prevent influxes and negatives in income. The last thing needed would be to spend for example, $4000 dollars and only have $3000 dollars saved up to spend leading to a -$1,000 dollar deficit. The first thing that I would need to look at would be the 2012-2013 MAFA boards flow of income. Two questions to ask myself would be What were some of the methods used to raise income for MAFA? and Were there any forms of sponsorship? The most recent 2012-2013 MAFA conference had free admission as opposed to the 2011-2012 conference charging about ~30-35$ for admission. Without having a set treasurer for 20122013 board, I would take a look at the financial budget and the budget plans from 2011-2012 and 20122013 to see if free admission did more harm than good to the finances of the MAFA organization. I would like MAFA admission as low as possible, or even free, as long as charging free admissions does not significantly hurt MAFAs budget. So in regards to targeting overall income, admission prices, and how budgeting/financing/income were handled, I would first want to talk about gaining (increasing) possible sponsors and sponsorships for MAFA. I like to think about the purpose and mission statement of MAFA as an umbrella. The umbrella that I am speaking of can represent Asian Americans. MAFAs target audience is Filipino-Americans, but that does not mean other races are included. Filipino-Americans and MAFA are just one part of an umbrella. In correlation to sponsorships, MAFA is just one part of the umbrella. When maintaining consistent income in an organization, after finding the ideal client for an organization or business (in this case MAFA), marketing efforts does not mean that you are not able to work with other types of people. This correlates to the umbrella; sponsorships do not have to just target MAFA's central message that targets Filipino-Americans. Gaining sponsorships with this idea in mind helps to raise awareness and attract other American races (not just Asian-Americans). This will help attract all types of Americans (not just Asian-Americans) in support of the message of MAFA. Marketing to create awareness and around solutions helps to generate leads, in the case of treasurer, generate leads of potential consistent income. Not only am I focused on gaining sponsorships, I am focused on the member schools, potential member schools, and schools that wish to become involved behind MAFAs central message. I can coordinate with other school

Page 5

organizations and treasurers to help raise awareness through different types of events such as fundraising events, retreats, and more in order to help with adding to the flow of income for MAFA. MAFA can also host events for a cause that can help raise money for both MAFA and a charitable organization at the same time. There are multitudes of ideas that can be thrown out there to maintain a consistent income. The collaboration of MAFA board as a whole is needed to maintain consistent flow of income in order to expand the organization. Accepting more member schools, fund-raising, and sponsorships are but a few of many ideas that can be explored.
