The SAHABAT Support Center (SSC), a programme under the Malaysian Social Research Institute, provides services to refugeesfrom

minority communities living in Malaysia waiting to be resettled in a third country.Our programmes include: Family Healthcare, Mentoring, Daycare, Kindergarten and Home Schooling, Vocational training and more. It is expected that by providing these services to the refugees, it will be possible to have a direct and positive effect on their well being. The center operates with full and part time staff members. All programmes are monitored carefully and evaluation is carried out periodically to assess the effectiveness of the programmes offered, the quality of the services and the impact on the refugees. In addition, continued analysis of the needs of the refugees is done to facilitate planning and implementation accordingly. GOALS To provide support for refugees from small scattered refugee communities To provide educational programmes for refugees (adults, teenagers and children) To provide education and daycare services for preschoolers To have a resource center To provide vocational training for refugees To effectively link with other organizations to provide more and better services and support for refugees To effectively use volunteers to help refugees at the centre CLIENTELE The first, and primary, clientele are refugees from small scattered communities mainly refugees from Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria and Somalia. At the moment we have more than 250 families registered at the SSC. The Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI) is in charge of managing the centre. In addition, the centre has full- and part-time staff and volunteers in charge of the different activities and programmes. The Malaysian Social Research Institute (MSRI) is non governmental/profit organisation established in 1959. Among its key objectives are: To Promote: an understanding of the multi-ethnic cultures and the various religions of the people of Malaysia with a view to promoting inter-ethnic intractions and unity and where feasible to develop social action project that involve more than one community joining together to solve real problems, an understanding and appreciation of Muslim and other communities in various parts of the world in pursuance of humanitarian rights and to conscientise the public and mobilise support for people struggling for selfdetermination and/or suffer from war or other forms of dispossession.

To Address Important social issues of the times through research, publication, seminars and other actions, on its own, or in collaboration with likeminded institutions or individuals, thereby to conscientise and encourage participation by various section of the public in their solution.

A programme launched by the MSRI designed to match local people in a one-to-one basis with refugees with the goal of making refugees feel more at home in Malaysia

Adopt a Family Programme

The Adopt a Family programme matches impoverished refugees families living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with individual or group sponsors to provide the family with regular support; the package includes Food, Cleaning, and Personal Care Items.

Women to Women

Provides informational, emotional and physical support to refugees throughout their pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience.

Educational Programmes

Children Home Schooling The main goal is to provide children with a temporary school environment while staying in Malaysia until resettlement Vocational Training The main goal is to provide vocational training at the SSC and/or supporting refugees to find other venues where they can get special trainings. English, Computers, Art, Sports The SSC offers these and other classes to refugees children, teenagers and adults . Kindergarten The SSC provides kindergarten facilities for refugee children.

Family Healthcare Programme

The SSC provides Preventive Health Care, Primary Health Care, Health Care Education and Counseling.
