Dear Justice Weinstein, I am writing regarding State Senator Shirley Himtley. We met Senator Huntley during her campaign when she was running against: State Senator Ada Smith in 2006.1 proudly stood with her and endorsed her because she was real, genuine and sincere. As Assembly District Leader, she was miming in parts of my district iu Broad Channel., Howard Beach and Lindenwood During her terms as State Senator, she kept her campaign promises to help seniors, children and all of her constituents in my district wever letter letting her constituents down. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting her wonderful husband, Herb Huntley, They made a great team traveling through the district and to Albany together. Shirley always delivered mudi needed projects that my district had always been denied. Shirley's proven track record of getting the job done is why we have continued to support her through the years. She was a well respected lady of class and honor, a true pioneer woman and a great advocate for education. We are hoping that Shirley Huntlcy can get a second chance. If we had to do it again, we would still back her for public office.

March 24, 2013 Judge Jack Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 RE: United States v. Shirley Huntley Dear Judge Weinstein, My name is Ondrea Gail Harris and 1 am a longtime friend of Shirley Huntley. I have known Mrs. Huntley for over twenty years. We live in the same community. My relationship with Mrs. Huntley began because she has always been a helpful person. Mrs. Huntley has always been there for me in my time of need. When my husband died a few years ago, Mrs. Huntley was the only person that gave me financial assistance with the burial. In 2009, my nephew from Mount Vernon was killed and Mrs. Huntley was there assisting me and my family with whatever was needed. Mrs. Huntley has helped me with housing issues and whatever other problems that I have had with my children, my grandchildren and other family members. I can call on Mrs. Huntley at any time day or night and she never shuts me out. Mrs. Huntley has, truly, been my lighthouse. Mrs. Huntley has not only been helpful to me, she has been helpful to the community. When I was active in the PTA at PS 140 there were ten children whose families were unable to afford their graduation robes. Mrs. Huntley stepped up and paid for the robes. This is only one example of Mrs. Huntley helping the community. It breaks my heart to have to write this letter to you. Never in my dreams would I have imagined Mrs. Huntley in this type of situation. Mrs. Huntley is one of the most loving, giving, forgiving and helpful people that I know. In fact, I would not be speaking out of turn if I say that Mrs. Huntley is, by far, the most helpful person that I know. It is for these reasons Your Honor, that I am requesting that you take into consideration all of Mrs. Huntley's good deeds. Mrs. Huntley's good deeds far outweigh any of her missteps. Good friends are hard to come by. Mrs. Huntley is a friend that has become a part of my family. Judge Weinstein, please show Mrs. Huntley mercy and allow her to remain in the

community. Clearly, Mrs. Huntley is not a threat to anyone. In addition, I am concerned for her because she seems very stressed and depressed by her situation. Your Honor, if you feel that Mrs. Huntley requires supervision, I am willing to step up and take responsibility for her. Removing Mrs. Huntley from the community helps no one. Allowing Mrs. Huntley to remain in the community will help her, me and thousands of others. I would very much like to speak to you about Mrs. Huntley. I can be reached at 347-8693264.

Sincerely, Ondrea Gail Harris

1 have been a resident of Queens since 1962. I am also a neighbor or community activist Shirley Huntley. I have known her since 1978. I grew up with her children. Ever since 1 can remember, Ms. Huntley has always been involved in the community, whether it is in the Block Association, or helping the youth. February 11,2013

The Honorable Jack B. Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: I am writing this letter in support of Senator Shirley Huntley. I have known Senator Huntley for almost five years. We met through a mutual friend and following the course of our initial conversation, I was almost immediately won over by her welcoming disposition. Senator Huntley proved to be highly skilled in her dealings with people of all walks of life. Her respect for individuals was a quality I believed defined the essence of her being. I feel confident that a great many people shared that belief, especially those whose votes she captured in the Senate races she won for three consecutive terms. In getting to know Senator Huntley a little better, I found out that prior to her run for Senate, she was an active member in her community, I believe it was gaining the trust of the people at a very fundamental level that served as the driving force behind her successful service. I am sure you will agree that it is extremely difficult to please a great majority of people in any setting. However, Senator Huntley "s degree of insight, concern, and passion for ensuring a level playing field for the people of her district somehow paved the way for her to earn their trust, their votes and to perform on their behalf in a greater capacity: in the Senate. It is my hope that you will thoroughly examine the facts of the case that has been brought against Senator Huntley. I find it inconceivable that this representative for the people, one who truly received pleasure in watching the neighborhood thrive, particularly from a self-educational standpoint, would somehow carelessly damage the bond of trust that existed between herself and the citizens of her community. Senator Huntley spent many hours listening to the people of her community. I hope that she is allowed what she deserves: a fair chance at being heard. Sincerely,

.\y Wilkefeon

To the Honorable Judge Jack Weinstein

United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, New York 11201

Your Honor, For as long as I have known Mrs. Shirley Huntley, more than thiry years, she has always been a person of good moral character. I have known her for the past 25 years. In the early 8o's my son was an enrollee in the summer youth program in South Jamaica. Mrs. Huntley and her husband Herb mentored my son during that summer. It was his first summer job. He was fourteen years old. Mrs. Huntley's profound dedication and concern for children and adult in the Southeast Queens community has been an integral part of her commitment and passion in her role as advocate; long before she ran for office. What has happened to Mrs. Huntley is tragic, and out of context for someont; who I have known so many years for standing in the vanguard; on picket lines, mentoring youth and adults, and fostering such a positive image in her community.

When Ms. Huntley decided to run for office, I volunteered to carry petitions. Although I am not her constituent.; I sincerely felt in my heart she would be the right person for Senator, anrl serve the constituents' In her district to the best of her ability. My name is Dianne Glass. Since 1993 I have been employed by the Department of Education. I have been a teacher since 2002. For the past 8 years I have been a teacher at P.S. 116 in Queens (718 526-4884). I am also a member of the Greater Allen Cathedral since 1980. I have also served in the capacity of an usher at Allen. If there is any additional information 1 can provide, I can be reached at 917 834-9456.

The Honorable Jack Weinstein, Judge, United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, New York 11201 March 9, 2013 Greetings Your Honor; It is indeed an honor to write a letter a recommendation for Mrs. Shirley Huntley. My knowledge of and working with Mrs. Huntley dates back more than fifteen years and predates her tenure and service as a state senator from this district. Mrs. Huntley has always worked for the improvement and betterment of our community. I have always admired her concerns for the have not's and the voiceless. Please allow me to recall some of those incidents that brought about my respect of her stand in the community. I recall during the years of 20105/2006, we had major educational and cultural problems at one of our local middle school that had a predominantly Haitian population. Due to some problematic issues such as administrators forcing Haitian children to eat on the floor, the Haitian Community due to cultural issues was refusing to cooperate with the department of education and elected officials in helping to correct and eliminate the problem. The situation was at a virtual standstill where the children were being denied a quality education. Mrs. Huntley intervened and due to the respect and trust she received from the Haitian Community and the Department of Education she was able to open up the communications between the Haitian Community and elected and Department of Education officials which led to a resolution of the problems being experienced by the Haitian Children in the school. Huntley went out of her way at the expense of being criticized by her own community to resolve an issue that affected children at a middle school outside of her community. I also wish to point out Mrs. Huntley's support of the NAACP Day Care. The Day Care provides services for low income families which allow them to work during the day. As long as I have known Mrs. Huntley (15 yrs) she has provided support for our day care. Whenever we have fund raisers, Mrs. Huntley has always been the first to respond. It might seem small but due to her help and support over the years, we were able to help thousands of parents return to gainful employment while we provided a safe and learning environment for their children. I would also like to reflect on her involvement with the high unemployment rate is South East Queens. In 2010 we started a campaign to ensure that the then proposed Aqueduct Casino would employ residents from South East Queens, New York. Our concerns were that such employment would reduce the high poverty and crime rate in South East Queens. This crusade lasted until the opening of the casino in 2011. Although we had numerous civic and community group leaders involved in the crusade, we needed our elected officials to strengthen our demand for jobs. Senator Huntley was the only elected official from 'South East Queens who both publically and privately without seeking Mrs.

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 22 of 80 PageID #: 235

approval or fanfare supported our community employment efforts at Aqueduct from the beginning of our crusade until the opening of the casino. Due to her efforts, nearly seventy percent of the persons employed by the casino are from South East Queens. In essence, more than a thousand South East Queens residents are working today because Senator Huntley decided to take an unpopular stand on that which was right and for the good of our community. I would also like to mention an experience I had at Jamaica Houses in South East Queens three years ago. We were conducting a workshop at the tenant's meeting when numerous tenants started complaining about the harsh and deplorable conditions they were living under in the public housing complex. Senator Huntley's reps were present and advised the group that they would relay their complaints to Senator Huntley. I subsequently received notice from one of the members that Senator Huntley was having a meeting to respond to their complaints. I went to the meeting and discovered that Senator Huntley had convened a meeting of the tenants which was really a hearing where she had brought in all of the NYCHA supervisors and administrators that were responsible for the issues the tenants were complaining about;(i.e., garbage on the grounds, over flow trash bins, delayed repairs etc). Senator Huntley conducted the meeting and gave a voice to each tenant who previously felt they were powerless to change their living conditions. Some of the tenants consulted with me afterwards on how appreciative and unaccustomed they were to having an elected official responding to their needs and following up with direct action. I respected the fact that Senator Huntley kept her word and worked to help those in need in the public housing complex. During my years of knowing her as Mrs. Huntley and knowing her as Senator Huntley, I believe that this act best defines her character. She could have easily hidden and or bury their complaints on her desk or in a cubby hole and none would be the wiser because the media doesn't respond to calls and outcry of the poor. But she chose to meet and address their concerns head on. In closing, I could go on and on about how Mrs. Huntley has been a pillar of this community, and what she means to so many in this community. Asa member of the criminal justice community, I realize and respect the decision that you have to make. Please do not let one act paint the whole picture or write the whole book on Mrs. Huntley's' character. In making your decision, I ask that you take into account the life time of goods and services Mrs. Huntley has provided for this community. Thanks for taking the time to read my letter. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any further assistance in this matter.

Sincerely;

The Honorable Judge Weinstein 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: It has been a pleasure to know State Senator Shirley Huntley. My earliest association with her was a program for young children held at a Montessori school. This was over 20 years ago. During these 20 years, Senator Huntley has worked tirelessly for the youth of our community. She volunteered to improve the education of our youth for 30 years. When Shirley became my State Senator, I was elated. Now she could give back to the community. She helped the senior citizens, the youth and the entire community. I invited her to speak at a senior breakfast and she honestly and sincerely spoke to us about politics. The Shirley I know is honest, sincere, creates jobs and is so dedicated to the welfare of others. I again reiterate that Senator Huntley is a wonderful, caring and sincere stalwart of our community. We need her in the community. Sincerely,

This letter is in reference to one Shirley L. Huntley, a resident, Board Member of the United for Progress Democratic Club (UFPDC) and ExSenator from the Borough of Queens. Mrs. Huntley has been a very, very productive citizen in our community. She was elected President of Community School Board 28 and was the founder of a non-profit social service and education group in our community. Mrs. Huntley and her husband have been serving our community for over 40 years in various capacities. After retiring as president of community school board 28, our community asked that she run for the position of New York State Senator where the community felt she could represent them more direct in their needs. She won this position and served her community some 5 or more years. As a Senator she was the Ranking Minority Member of the Investigations and Government Operations Committee and also served on the Education Committee, the Higher Education Committee, the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee and the Transportation Committee. The Board Members of UFPDC ask that whatever your decision toward Mrs. Huntley should be. that it is a favorable one due to her age and her body of work in the community.

Humbly submitted,

Honorable Jack Weinstein Judge, United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201 March 10, 2013 Dear Judge Weinstein; I Denise L Moore have known Shirley Huntley since the spring of 2006. During this time I was afforded the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Huntley on not only a professional side but a personal side. Mrs. Huntley is a person who is trust worthy, loyal, and cares about the community in which she lives. While working for the New York City Police Department as a police officer, I have reached out to Mrs. Huntley to help to support the youth programs when we needed an extra hand. Mrs. Huntley would always help because she believed in the future of our youth. Mrs. Huntley would always stress the importance of educating and supporting our youth, so they could be positive and productive people in our society. Mrs. Huntley have also sponsored programs for Veterans in need, whether it was for clothing, housing, health, education or employment opportunities. At these programs hundreds of Veterans came to these events, and you could see on their faces that they was so glad that someone cared especially an elected official. Mrs. Huntley is truly an asset to the community, though no longer in political office she has continued to help and fight for the rights of persons in need of a helping hand. Should you require any further information from me, please feel free to contact me at 917-2874428. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

This missive is one of support for Shirley Huntley. My name is Charles Fisher sir and I am the Founder and Chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council, Inc. Our purpose is to show participants how to use their time, talent and the hip-hop culture to improve social, political and economic conditions in their schools, homes and communities. We are against the degrading of women, offensive lyrics and negative images produced through music and films. Presently we are working with NYS Senator Malcolm Smith; NYC Councilwoman Inez Dickens, Congressman Gregory Meeks, NYS Senator James Sanders, the NYPD, NYC Housing Authority, the Coca-Cola Foundation and a host of school and community groups. As the former manager of LL Cool J, I am committed to use my celebrity contacts to solicit the support of artists that will deliver a positive motivational message to our youth and young adults urging them to stop the violence, graduate from school and live a productive life. Over the years we have worked with Mrs. Huntley to reduce gun violence, improve the graduation rates in our schools, and empower our youth through our "Read 2 Succeed through Hip-Hop & Sports" project and our "Hip-Hop Against Gun & Gang Violence" initiative. I have known Mrs. Huntley for over 20 years. She has been an outstanding leader in our community. Your Honor, she has made a mistake, but because of her age and sickness in her family we are asking you for leniency. Over the years she has donated her time to help us address the needs and aspirations of our youth and young adults and we have never received any funding from the former Senator. The wisdom we speak is strictly from the heart and we are asking for mercy and compassion in the form of probation, community service or maybe house arrest. Jail time will not change anything, but having her donate countless hours back to the community informing young people on the proper way to perform their civic duty would have a bigger impact on those we seek to influence down a productive path. We hope this letter will help you better understand why this alternative to jail time will better serve the citizens of Southeast Queens with a focus on our youth and young adults. Respectfully yours,

Charles Fisher Chairman

The Honorable Judge Weinstein District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: I am writing on behalf of Shirley Huntley. Even though she had reached a status of State Senator, she has always been just Shirley to me and to hundreds of other people in the communities she represented. All that has happened in the months leading up to the present is truly surreal. Surreal because she has lived a life opposite of what has been portrayed in the newspapers. For thirty to some forty odd years, I have known her. She has always been a person devoted to the children in the communities she served and not at all impressed or motivated by personal gain or greed such as fancy clothes, cars, and expensive trips. As the Director of a youth academy, 1 know what the meaning of caring, selflessness, and sacrifice is, and she was all of that. A tireless supporter and defender of young people. Her strength, strengthened me and her life provided to me a role model for me to follow. She personified a life full of purpose and meaning. I hope that the words that I have written on her behalf and am sure others have too, will implore you to grant her leniency as she faces this most trying episode in her life. Sincerely,

Bill Briggs

Althea Bradshaw-Tyson, Ed.D. Former Principal, School District 28 120-05 230th Street, NY 11411 March 8, 2013 Honorable Judge Jack Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: I have known Shirley Huntley for over twenty-three years. I was a teacher at then Catherine and Count Basie Junior High School in CommunitySchool District 28. For the nineteen years following that I remained in School District 28 as a Teacher, Dean, Assistant Principal and Principal, my relationship with Ms. Huntley went from just casual acquaintances with a mutual interest in educating children to a Community Leader whose priority was insuring the best education for all children in her district, regardless of the physical boundaries of your school. Her main focus was her insistence that every school in her district and all surrounding neighborhoods have the resources to effectively educate all students. Her mantra was always about students getting the best education. She took this goal a bit further when she became the Community School Board President in District 28 where all schools in the district were treated fairly and equally with resources for children. She encouraged schools to look for the best teacher and administrator candidates as she said without excellent educators, the students would be given a second rate education. As an Assistant Principal in two District 28 schools and a Principal in one, when Ms. Huntley was School Board President, and later President of the Community Education Council (CEC) she insured that funds were given to every school in the district for making improvements in technology and to bring each one into the 21st Century. In all my various roles as an educator in District 28, Ms. Huntley has repeatedly proven herself as an advocate for all children. Evidence of this includes the many workshops for parents she orchestrated, being present at every graduation or evening events at the schools, even with a day's notice.

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 30 of 80 PageID #: 243

When other politicians had no time for little children in her district, she would always be present, even for Kindergarten Stepping Up Ceremonies. She always found the time to share special moments with students at all levels. When celebrations were held recognizing educators, if a teacher or member of staff wanted to attend Ms. Huntley would make this dream a reality. One would think that in giving so much to the community and to the schools that Ms. Huntley would ask for something in return. That has not been my experience. Rather, she has always asked me, "What do you need for your school? How can I be of service to you?" My experiences with Shirley Huntley have all been focused on educating children. I consider these experiences exceptional as I have worked with very few community leaders who are as passionate about educating children as Shirley Huntley has been. If further information is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me at 917.373.6892 or email atyson36@gmail.com. Sincerely,

Dear Judge Weinstein

I am writing this letter in the hopes that it will help you to see what kind of person Shirley C Huntley is, despite the transgressions / accusations that led us all to this point. I have lived across the street from Shirley for many years and in that time I have seen many aspects of her personality. I have always found her to be extremely kind, dependable, and well regarded among her peers. She has been a good neighbor and a dedicated community advocate. This transgression should not be the only factor you look at in this case. I hope you will also consider Shirley's efforts in community service, her successes in her position as well as her strong commitment to family. I believe without a doubt that Shirley is incredibly remorseful for what she has been accused of doing. I believe it has been reflected in her efforts to make amends to all that has been affected and to the court. It is my hope that you would be willing to give her a second chance. Sincerely,

Greetings Your Honor: It was with great disbelief when I heard of the charges against my dear friend Mrs. Shirley L. Huntley. It is so out of character for the Shirley that I know and have the utmost respect for. Shirley has been a true friend for many, many years and has done so many wonderful things for her community. As a member of our organization, Shirley tirelessly devotes so much of her time to our many youth and senior citizen activities She was the one (and still is) who we call for advice relative to helping the many youth at risk in our community, or the seniors who need a voice to be heard on their behalf. Shirley admits she has broken the law, although due to what I consider bad influences. Imprisonment at this time would unnecessarily destroy her life, the lives of her family members, and deprive all of us of a great friend, and valuable member of our organization. Shirley's good deeds must not be forgotten, and I humbly ask that you not alter the direction of her life based on bad decisions. Please feel free to contact me at (718) 712-2061. Sincerely,

March 9, 2013 Judge Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Pfaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein, I am a resident of Southeast Queens, and a board member of the organization United Coalition of Veterans and Community Rights. Our organization over the last four years was engaged in a struggle to prevent the Veterans Administration from closing the St. Albans VA Hospital. Closure of that hospital would have eliminated any opportunity to bring quality health care to our veterans in the area as well as negatively impact the quality of life in our community. Senator Huntley was one of the first elected officials to support our efforts. In the summer of 2010 a series of rallies were staged every Saturday, Ms. Huntley never missed attending a rally to express her support. Not only did she stand with us but Senator Huntley introduced a resolution in the New York State Senate urging the Veterans Administration to cancel the project. Ms. Huntley has done a lot of good for the residents and veterans of Southeast Queens, from health care events for our seniors to annual Thanksgiving dinners for our veterans. I hope that the good that Senator Huntley has done in our community will be taken into consideration at this time. Sincerely,

Honorable Judge Weinstein: I have known Senator Shirley Huntley for the past nine years as a dedicated, committed professional within the District 28 community. In my capacity as Administrative Assistant to Dictrict 28 Community Education Council, I have had the opportunity to observe her work as President of the council and my supervisor. Ms. Huntley has demonstrated her ability as an effective manager, concerned with levels of performance, quality of interpersonal relationships and morale of her staff. More significantly, her interest in the education of children, as well as their overall welfare has been quite remarkable. This is clearly measured by her active involvement in her varied responsibilities, and beyond. She vigorously advocated for improvements in District 28 schools, particularly in the acquisition of needed resources and as a force in mediation among the schools, community and the Department of Education. In light of the above-mentioned attributes, I am pleased to write this testimony for Ms. Huntley. ! know her as a person of good character, and strongly believe that she would uphold principles of social justice and fairness as she continues to serve her community.

Since that time in becoming acquainted with her, I can only say that she is a respected strong and courageous voice of reason in the community of Southern Queens, as well as other boroughs. Mrs. Huntley held her Senate position for many years based upon her integrity and hard-work within the community. She is a smart and swift thinker with the knowledge and morals to motivate others to feel secure and proud of themselves in the face of any adversities. Dear Sir, My family and I have known Mrs. Huntley for over forty years. We worked with her in the schools in district 28 to improve the educational instruction in our community to equal those of the schools in the more affluent areas in our district. We didn't want to bus our younger sister and brother out of the district in order to succeed in the educational process, as was the case with my older sister and me. Mrs. Huntley has always been a champion for the children. I know her family to be a strong Christian family with strong ties to the Community. Her concern has always been for the safety, education and social programs in the Community. As a State Senator she fought for the things that are necessary for our Community to compete with other Communities in the State. I ask that you would please take into consideration her track record as a Community activist and good neighbor. Thank you in advance for your consideration of my letter.

Very Truly Yours,

i

Huntley Dear Judge Weinstein: I am a friend of Shirley Huntley who has known her for more than twenty-five years. During my service as a pastor of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church of Jamaica, NY for thirty-seven years and Executive Secretary for Clergy United for Community Empowerment since its inception in 1984 our paths have crossed many times. I knew Shirley when she served as President of the now defunct School Board District 28. She was very fair in her decisions that benefited children of different backgrounds in parts of Forest Hills and South Jamaica. Her task in that position was not easy. Yet she served well with distinction. Being close as a friend I believe I was somewhat instrumental in convincing her to run for the New York Senate seat. I had then and still have confidence that Shirley could and did do a fine job as senator. She allocated member items in her district only as a means of taking care of those who elected her. The Food Program at Bethesda, Clergy United for Community Empowerment, the Veterans Building in Jamaica and Youth in Tennis were among some of the organizations designed to receive member items until the then Governor Patterson held it up. And the now Governor Cuomo still has not released them. Many could not be fed properly, services by the clergy were curtailed, the new home for the veterans was postponed and many children in the tennis program were denied benefits. This is a request for justice with mercy. In my religion, when sin is committed and the same admitted and the person repents and is sorry for what they have done, we believe in forgiving. That is not to say they should not be punished for their sins, but justice with mercy should be considered. That's all I am requesting for my friend Shirley Huntley whom I truly believe is sorry for what she has done and still has some good days ahead to volunteer in the community in which she has sincerely served for years as a volunteer before going to the senate. Sincerely in Hisiiame,

Re: Shirley L. Huntley

Dear Judge Weinstein:

T am writing to you regarding Shirley Huntley, why I have always supported her, and to humbly ask for leniency at her sentencing hearing. I am a student at Seton Hall University in my junior year majoring in Bio-Physics. I was born and raised in Southeastern Queens from a politically active family where education has always been a large factor in the foundation of our home. It is because of this factor, I am more than familiar with Shirley Huntley and her undeniable contributions to the education systems in Queens and abroad while she was a State Senator. I was fortunate enough to attend schools that offered above average education here in Southeastern Queens. My parents were very active in the Parent Teacher Associations (PTA), School Leadership Teams (SLT), and the School Boards later the Community Education Council Districts (CEC). As a child, 1 had to attend these meetings and I cannot remember, NOT seeing and hearing from Shirley Huntley. Mrs. Huntley was the one person that would openly and honestly speak out against education disparity even if by doing this, it would not be to her advantage as the then President of School Board 28. I can recall a particular time when I was Vice President of the Student Government Team at Springfield Middle School (I.S. 59), we were encountering a challenge and I asked my mother to contact Mrs. Huntley for assistance. Mrs. Huntley was in Albany lobbying for services for the schools in Queens the day that we had our meeting, but wrote a letter supporting the students. She also continued to communicate with Principal Gordon and the matter was resolved. I followed her political career and was proud to call her a friend and mentor. As a child, I experienced bullying and it was extremely unpleasant and frightening. When I learned that Senator Huntley had passed the bill against bullying, I was elated! It is because of this and the many other wonderful things that Shirley Huntley had done, that I gladly worked on her campaigns.

It would be remiss if I did not share that I am having difficulty believing that Shirley Huntley did what she has pleaded to. I have known her to be a woman of integrity and honesty. I can recall her speaking to audiences of youth and college students where she adamantly spoke of the importance of "doing what is right and let the rest take care of itself, even if you must stand alone". This is a creed that I have known her to live by so forgive me for my disbelief. It is because of these things, that I am asking that you show my friend and mentor Shirley Huntley leniency when you sentence her. She has and continues to be such a great asset to this community. Even now, it is difficult to see her because her home has become an office of sorts and the people of Southeastern Queens still solicit her guidance and assistance. I only have one more request, your Honor. I am asking that you spend some time with Mrs. Huntley and speak with her. You will easily see the person that I shared with you in this letter. I hope that you will take this into consideration when making your decision. Thank you in advanced.

Sincerely,

Crystal David 347-331-6657

Huntley Dear Judge Weinstein: I am requesting that you please show Shirley Huntley mercy when you are determining her sentence. I have had the pleasure of meeting her and conversing with her while working on her campaign. I supported her for a number of reasons, but the main reasons I did was because of the immediate assistance that she and her staff gave to me and my niece when she experienced unprecedented abuse at her school, Young Women's Leadership Academy in Jamaica, New York. Until Senator Huntley and her staff contacted the proper authorities, we were not getting anywhere. It was because of this assistance that my niece is now in an education environment void of bullying and attacks. My entire family is grateful for this and we know that Mrs. Huntley is sincere with the issue of bullying because of her work on the issue by passing a bill on the topic while in State Senate. Your Honor, Shirley Huntley is a wonderful person who this community has and continues to rely on when we are at a dead end. Please do not take her away from us. This community would really appreciate you for this.

Subject: Shirley L. Huntley Dear Judge Weinstein: I am writing to you to share with you the Shirley Huntley that I know. I am a business owner in South Jamaica. I own A Plate of Soul Restaurant. Being a new owner here has been quite a challenge for me. I have discovered that everything in Queens is political. It is extremely difficult to be successful here if you do not subscribe to the workings in the community. Not knowing anyone here can mean the failure for any new business owner. I was introduced to the then, Senator Huntley and she welcomed me to the community with opened arms. When I shared with her the challenges that I was facing, she and her staff invited me to community events and introduced me to others. Senator Huntley allowed me to showcase my food at one of her huge events which brought me business. Senator Huntley held meeting in my establishment, sent others to do the same, and that also brought me business. On a more personal note, Shirley Huntley, even while campaigning, took the time to talk to me and encouraged me to keep working hard and not to close the doors of my restaurant because the people in the community deserved to have a nice sit down eatery. I could see the love and compassion that she has for this community. It is because of this and the many other contributions that I have discovered that she has done, that I am humbly asking that you please show her mercy and allow her to stay here to continue to help those who can't help themselves. I hope that you will take this into consideration when making the decision when she is sentenced. Thank you in advanced. Sincerely,

I was so grateful that I volunteered on her 2010 campaign.

I learned of all of the great things that she had done. I also learned skills that children do not ordinarily learn at that age. I was thirteen years old. I learned how to phone bank, communication skills, and how to pitch information.

I really like Senator Huntley. She would talk with all of us like we were her equal and f learned a lot from her. I am asking that you please think of what she means to me and my family when you make your sentencing decision. Thank you very much for your time.

The Honorable Jack B. Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: This letter is proudly written in support of Senator Shirley L. Huntley who, until recently, served New York City's 10th Senate District. I have had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Senator Huntley personally for more than a decade and have always found her to be an inviting, candid, resourceful, and highly-motivated individual who cared deeply for her family, friends, colleagues, and community at large. I recall a time when she discovered my plans had changed during a Christmas holiday several years ago. Senator Huntley immediately shared her belief that "no one should be alone during the holidays" and opened her home and heart to me. There are many great things that I can say on her behalf but what I believe would paint the greatest picture is to speak of a woman who believed in creating a community, a great sense of connectedness wherever she went. When I first came to know that she would run for a seat in the Senate, I was thrilled and immediately knew the underserved within the district could have a powerful and wellrespected voice to champion their causes. Senator Huntley encouraged people to get involved in politics at the grassroots level, to become more familiar with those running for office within their own districts, to take an interest in and exercise their rights and beliefs by voting. Each of her constituents came to know just how powerful each one could be if they educated themselves and got involved in and supported programs within their respective communities. Senator Huntley believed in the need for and the power of education. One glimpse of her years in service to the community underscores the effectiveness and appropriate use of her power and respect. The numerous legislation she enacted helped to ensure that every one of the constituents who placed their willful trust in her (for three consecutive terms and a narrow miss for a fourth) benefited from her conscientiousness, care, and love of her community. Their concerns became her causes, and she arose each morning joyfully and purposefully ready to meet familiar challenges and take on new ones. Truly, the

one thing Senator Huntley loved more than the people she was elected to serve was the impeccable and transparent service she gave to them and on their behalf - especially in her golden years. I was deeply saddened to learn of the charges that were brought against Senator Huntley and, as of this writing, find it the most difficult notion to accept - even in light of her recent plea. Senator Huntley's service prior to the political quagmire of which she has found herself the central figure spoke volumes. To that end, please allow it to factor in at the time you render your decision and mete out your judgment. Further, Judge Weinstein, I humbly implore you, the presiding judge in this case, to give grave consideration not only to the facts of this case, but to other variables impacting it such as: (1) her successful record of public service (especially prior to her nomination to the Senate); (2) the positive impact her service has had on the livelihoods of the constituents as well as the community; and (3) her age. I trust that you will examine and thoroughly scrutinize all testimonies and evidence presented and live up to the oath you swore by administering "justice without respect to persons, and do equal right" as you "faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon you ... under the Constitution and laws of the United States/' Respectfully,

Mrs. Huntley was and will always be revered as being one of the strongest advocates for parents in our community. Her beginnings as a member of the School Board has endeared her to me because that is a role 1 currently hold as the president of Community District Education Council 29. Mrs. Iluntiey was always our staunch ally in pursuit of the best public education for the children we serve in District 29. Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: One the great privileges in life is to meet someone and make friends and witness the same relationship blossom over three (3) decades into a very meaningful and enduring legacy. In this regard, and from the outset, when I first met Shirley Huntley, she was rigorously and tirelessly about helping others ~ most of whom could not help themselves. Shirley has always very generously shared her time and personal resources to advocate for impoverished children and their families whose generations span back more than fifty (50) years. Within the same half century she has consistently stood up for and protected people with disabilities, homeless veterans, and a plethora of others with exceptionally modest backgrounds who have had little to no voice to express their dire needs. Indeed, I can readily attest that many in our community here in Southeast Queens, NY ~ and especially me - have always regarded Shirley as the 4 go-to' person that exemplifies altruism in its finest tradition. Yet, I'm sure that given your many distinguished and laudable years on the federal bench and the priceless wisdom that comes with the same experience you can agree that none of us are perfect; and while we make no excuses or argue frivolous mitigation when the law has been compromised - some of us, even those of us with great responsibility, sometimes err to a degree where we must come under the judgment of the court. It is upon this reflection in tandem with a vivid memory of the exceptional and extraordinary good Shirley has performed for countless souls ~ which far more outweighs any recent mistakes she has made that compells me to write to you, your honor, and without reservation request your leniency for Shirley as you consider her sentence. Shirley is a still a pillar of our community and a dear friend of mine. And if the court might require for me to share my testimony in person about the virtues and the fine character of Shirley Huntley I will eagerly and readily heed the call. Judge Jack Weinstein: I am writing this letter in strong support of Senator Shirley Huntley. I have known Senator Huntley for over thirty years. I began my career as a teacher in 1979 in Community School District 28 and recently retired as Superintendent in the same District- Senator Huntley was a strong force in the community and an advocate for schools for as long as I can remember. Prior to Senator Huntley becoming President of the school board, she was a strong force in any school that needed her help. She was always available for schools that were in trouble and acted as a liaison between the Board of Education, local community leaders and the Community School District. As a newly assigned Principal to an alternative school, I lacked the materials I needed to begin the school. Senator Huntley was instrumental in helping me attain adequate materials such as books and technology. She made a difference in the lives of young people who would not have a chance of not only surviving but exceedingexpectations that year. Senator Huntley has performed similar acts for countless other schools within the District.

I want to take this opportunity to not only thank her but let it be known that Senator Huntiey has worked hard for Community School District 28 and that her work has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I sincerely hope that her service to our community is recognized and taken into consideration.

Dear Honorable Judge Weinstein, My name is Marlene Reed, President of South Jamaica Houses Resident Association. I have lived in the South Jamaica area for over 50 years and I play a major part in the development of my community. I retired from NYC Housing Authority after 40 years and have worked with leaders like Mr. Shirley Huntley within the Department of Education and while she was in office as our NYS Senator. Shirley has always been one of the backbones of the community and helped shaped the future for many youth, teens and adults. She mentored my daughter as a child and continues to mentor so many to this day. My name is Michelle Reed, member of the community and former employee of Mrs. Huntley. I have witnessed the passion and dedication that comes from her work and realize first-hand the difficulty that surrounds such a position in this day in time. I witnessed her drive to help others and her commitment to the kids. The support of her friends, family and constituents showed in the success of all her campaigns and continuous support of many to this day. Like so many, we watched the news and heard the charges pending against the Mrs. Huntley and we ask that you offer her leniency in your decision. This is a mother, wife, grandmother and friend to many. It does no one any justice if she is sentenced to jail. Allow her to continue to serve her community with great pride and offer her gift of giving to so many of us who still appreciate her generosity. She is missed as a Senator as we speak, and we still need her assistance to grow our communities. Thank you judge for considering the request for leniency and we know the right course of action will be considered by the judicial system.

Honorable Judge Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: On behalf of Shirley Huntley, I submit this letter to offer a view of a woman who has diligently served as a New York State Senator for six years. Long before her victory as the chosen voice of the people of her Queens New York district, Mrs. Huntley took an interest in the betterment of her community. As Private Citizen Huntley, she was cognizant of the state of her community and became involved in the politics of preserving the positives and working towards the amelioration of the negatives. Her concern and contributions proved to her neighbors, who would become her constituents, that they could rely on her to represent them in a manner befitting a leader. Thus she was elected Senator, and was (is) well respected for her service. As a public figure, the fact that her character has come into question is troubling because I know her to be an upright and honest person who would go above and beyond to help someone in need. She would not jeopardize her integrity, nor the integrity of her family, friends, and constituents. The Shirley Huntley I know is not the Shirley Huntley egregiously paraded before the public over the past months. She is a woman of tenacious spirit with a resolute dedication to those she served. Judge Weinstein, T ask you as you preside over Mrs. Huntley's case, to take into consideration her character, and the fact that she willingly stepped up to be a leader. As a Senator, she was committed to performing her duties, and she did so with pride and an unselfish allegiance to her constituents. 1 believe she deserves to be exonerated. I support her in her fight to be free of the charges against her. Respectfully Sylvra V. Savage

February 15, 2013 To Whom It May Concern: I take this opportunity to offer some insight regarding Shirley Huntley. I have known Shirley for over 40 years on a personal as well as on a professional level. As a retiree of the New York City Board of Education, I recall quite vividly my early years of employment, where Shirley Huntley was a champion in demanding that all children receive equal services. I can assure you that throughout the years, her stance has been unwavering. She has always been a spokesperson for parents and children. Many new programs and initiatives were provided under her leadership as President of Community School Board 28 Queens. The School Board became a welcome link between school and community. I approached Shirley Huntley after she became a member of the New York State Senate, to get her feel for funding an after school program, knowing that she has always been keenly aware of the needs of the community. Mrs. Huntley immediately sprang into action and the Merrick Park Baptist Church After School Program began. The program was funded by a $50,000 grant (of which every penny has been accounted for). I served as Program Coordinator, three licensed NYC teachers and two assistants were hired to provide in depth homework assistance, determining students strengths and weaknesses and addressing them, as well as enhancing test taking skills. Cultural enrichment activities were also provided to teach children to respect and value each other. These services were provided to forty plus children in a safe environment. Many of these children would have to go home alone without adult supervision. Parents were more than pleased that their children were receiving such services without cost to them. This program would not have been possible without Shirley Huntley. I will ever be grateful to her for all that she has done for the community. On a personal note, we have lived in the same community for many years, thereby getting to know each other's families. We have shared many family functions and community events. The Huntley's started a Block Association for the betterment of the community. Christmas was always special because Shirley saw to it that all the children had toys. At this time, I ask for your utmost consideration regarding Shirley Huntley. If I may be of any assistance you may contact me at the above address. Thank you for your attention.

Your Honor, My name is Andrea M. Williams and I wish to express my support for Mrs. Shirley Huntley at this time. I have known Mrs. Huntley for approximately five years. Since that time in becoming aquainted with her, I can only say that she was and remains a respected pillar in the community of Southern Queens, New York. Mrs. Huntley held her Senate position for many years based upon her integrity and hard-work within the community. I was quite dismayed to hear of the events leading to this court appearance. I can personally attest to Shirley Huntley's support of her constituents in a time need, and her willingness to help with their problems and issues to the very best of her ability. I reached out to Mrs. Huntley with a personal crisis involving my son Franklin Gibbs and an unfortunate situation that he became involved in when first enlisted in the military. My son became involved in an incident with another individual while stationed overseas in Bahrain. He did not inform me of the incident until the Navy was about to administratively and dishonorably discharge him. Not knowing where to turn for assistance or even having a clue as to how to proceed, I did reach out to Mrs. Huntley who took the time to listen and come up with a plan of action, as I was heart-broken at that point thinking that my only son's future was at stake. Mrs. Huntley along with Congressman Gregory Meeks reached out to the Navy on my son's behalf. With their help and by GOD's Grace, my son Franklin was not discharged. He learned a valuable lesson, was able to complete his enlistment and has now begun his 3rd tour currently in Japan. He is a Master-at-Arms, and has passed his advancement test to Petty Officer 2nd Class with high marks. In closing your Honor, I ask your consideration in light of the above. Shirley Huntley is a woman of great character, sincerity and kindness. I can only imagine the number of lives that she touched during her service in government. She has now and will always have my full respect and support.

Respectfully submitjeo? 7W^W6^ tft Andrea M. William

Your Honor,

My name is Petty Officer 2nd Class Franklin Gibbs with the United States Navy and this letter is being written on behalf of Mrs. Huntley. It has come to my attention that she has been put in to a tight position regarding financial issues which has resulted in a court case. Though I do not have the full details as to what has happened, nor the plea, I am taking the time to give some insight regarding how Mrs. Huntley has helped me in a time of need when I was previously stationed overseas. I had an incident happen, sometime ago in 2008, which nearly had me processed out unfairly (not liberty or alcohol related). Without going in to much detail, when I was handed my paper for administrative separation, my mother, Ms. Andrea Williams had made contact with Mrs. Huntley, being someone within a congressional position, and without hesitation, Mrs. Huntley got in contact with the Commanding Officer of the Naval Support Activities Bahrain, who was at the time Captain Oberst. Because of her efforts, actions, and willingness to help someone who was serving the country he calls home, I am more than enthusiastic to say I still serve in the U.S. Navy, now stationed in Okinawa, Japan, going on year number six in May. With what little detail I have about about the case, I must say, when I did finally meet Mrs. Huntley in person, her personality and demeanor does not match the description of someone who would have done what she is being charged with. I believe there is more behind what is being presented and being military police within my branch, have indeed dealt with corruption in my departments numerous times. Some of which was indeed more in depth of what was being shown and leading to nothing more than a misunderstanding. In closing, Mrs. Huntley is a selfless person who does come to the aid of her people, whether they are near or far. I know from personal experience and I wish ! had more evidence other than "gutfeeling" to say that she would not, in this life time or another, do what she has being charged with.

Very Respectfully Franklin R. Gibbs Master-At-Arms Petty Officer, 2nd Class United States Navy

Re:

U.S.A. v. Shirley Huntley

Dear Judge Weinstein, I am writing this missive in support of my friend, Shirley Huntley. Shirley has been a long time advocate for education and a champion in our community. Her tireless advocacy for the education equality and access has been pivotal, particularly in communities of color. Additionally, in her capacity as pasi president of a local community school board, Shirley oversaw the management and administration of the educational goals within the southeast queens community. Once elected to the State Senate, Shirley continued the fight for our community. In addition to education, Shirley also championed other issues such as, community and economic development, senior issues, and veteran affairs issues. Her commitment to her community is unparalleled. Unfortunately, this community may never know what exactly transpired to Find Shirley in this predicament-whether it was political or not- but now, we do know her fate is in your hands. I humbly ask that you look at the totality of Shirley's life and howshehasiiveditasaguiJd in your sentencing decision and not just this isolated event. Sincerely, Giati A. Slaninka-jones

Judge Weinstein United States District Court Dear Judge Weinstein I am a Community Activist having served the community of South East Queens for the past five years. MS Huntley while being a Senator was extremely helpful in assisting me in my advocacy for children. I found her to be genuinely interested in how I was able to effect change in discrimination against children with disabilities. She not only succinctly define the problem, but took time out of her daily routine to point me in the right direction thereby making me better in the work I do for the youth in this community. I humbly request you consider all she has

WILLIAM SCARBOROUGH Assemblyman 29th District

March 8, 2013 Judge Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: I am writing this letter on behalf of Shirley Huntley, whom I have known for 40 years. I know Senator Huntley made mistakes, for which she has taken responsibility. However, 1 have seen first hand her dedication and commitment to the people of Southeast Queens. For decades before she became an elected official she fought to improve education for our students, and worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all our citizens. She and I have worked on numerous projects over the years, and I can say without hesitation that her efforts have made our community better than it would have been without her dedication. I hope that the good she has done for her community will be taken into account at this pivotal time. Sincerely,

March 8, 2013 The Honorable Judge Jack Weinstein United States District Count 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Your Honor: We are writing to you regarding Shirley Huntley. We have known Senator Huntley personally for over 12 years, and have known her to be responsible, reliable, and a trustworthy person; thus we find the charges to, which she has pleaded guilty out of character. We find it hard to believe that a person who has gone out of her way to help others; stands before you. Her endless efforts within the community made her well-known and for us she became the go to person who helped guided us through the many obstacles and endless paperwork required when dealing with the New York Education System - School Instructional Extension Program (SIEP). Her commitment to education and community services is why we arc forever indebted to her. She not only guided us, but inspired use to change our school from within. Her influence led us to take active roles not only in our local school, but also in our community. Her life of community services and willingness to always help others is one reason we consider Senator Huntley a member of our family. Respectfully Submitted

To: Honorable Jack B. Weinstein United States District Judge Eastern District of New York 225 Cadman Plaza East Brooklyn, New York 11201 RE: United States v. Shirley Huntley Docket No: 13 cr 54 (JBW) Dear Judge Weinstein; This letter is submitted for your Honor's consideration in the sentencing of Shirley Huntley. My name is Florence Johnson. I am an organizer for United NY. I live in Jamaica, NY. I am a community activist and Community Board member. I live in the district Mrs. Huntley serviced. I want to share with you, the person I have known her to be. I have been a constituent of Mrs. Huntley. I first met her at a Mothers' Day luncheon for single women about six years ago. I was struck by her drive to see all the members of our community receive a good education. She wanted nothing more than to see her community and its people thriving and productive. Her ambition to see her neighbors succeed helped to motivate many of our community members to launch projects designed to improve skills, provide healthy alternatives to what we eat and keep our children striving for good educations. At the end of the day, I ask you to consider all her life's work when she comes before you for sentencing and to show her compassion and leniency.

Sincerely,

Florence Johnson

Dear Judge Weinstein, I came to know former State Senator Shirley L. lluntley when I was Session Assistant (Intern) at the New York State Senate in 2009. The internship was through the University at Albany and I was a senior at that the time. I was placed in her Albany office and given a professional biography of her work and accomplishments in office. As I read through the

biography I was surprised that she had previously been a school board president in Queens for over fourteen years and an elected official for only two and half years. The first day I met Senator Huntley was in early January 2009. She brought me into her office and asked me what I wanted to accomplish in my internship, what my personal and professional goals were, and to always be honest and candid with her. Through this conversation I could tell Mrs. Huntley truly cared about me succeeding in the internship, that she was not in Albany for any monetary gain, and that she wanted to serve her neighbors, friends, and residents of Southeast Queens to the best of her abilities. From that moment on, I would have a front row seat to the valuable experience and lessons I would learn from Senator Huntley during the three and half years I would work for her. During my first couple of months as an intern, I observed Senator Huntley as she spoke with her constituents from the 10 district, debated bills on the Senate floor, and saw her many interactions with fellow senators. Gradually, week by week, my responsibilities in her office and

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 68 of 80 PageID #: 281

the communication between us grew.

We often spoke after she had meetings with various

lobbying groups and constituents. After one particular meeting with a group of Nurses, she discussed her fight to keep hospitals in Southeast Queens from closing. Senator Huntley mentioned a protest she was a part of in her neighborhood that used empty caskets to demonstrate the cost and loss of life, if a hospital in the area were to cease operating. The

compassion she showed for her community, brought to my attention, a courageous woman, who stood on the shoulders of those who inspired her, and forged her own unique identity through years of advocacy. After my internship ended in April of 2009, Senator Huntley offered me a full-time position as a Legislative aide, which T eagerly accepted. By that time working for Senator

Huntley was an enjoyable and great learning experience. I appreciated the amount of trust and input she allowed me to have on policy and legislative issues that were paramount at that particular time. In 2011, I was promoted to Legislative Director and had increased

responsibilities in the Albany office. Senator Huntley was not a micro manager and she always gave me and other employees from what T observed, the opportunity to display our talents and skills in the office. One of the many positive things I can say about Senator Huntley is that she unequivocally cares about her community and the people that live there. The many experiences that I have had in Southeast Queens while by her side have been eye opening. Seemingly,

everyone who hugs her or shakes her hand has known her for many years; they only have good things to say about her and deservedly so. She has helped pay the funeral of community members who could not afford it, she and her husband Herbert Huntley, have mentored countless children who have become productive adults, and she has forged friendships and bonds with her

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 69 of 80 PageID #: 282

neighbors in Southeast Queens for close to fifty years. I always joke with Senator Huntley that it seems like she knows almost everyone in her community, including their children and grandchildren. Senator Huntley has taken on the roles of being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, school board president, and of course State Senator. However, I believe one of her most important roles, is that of a community activist. Long before she was a state senator or school board president, she was fighting for civil and basic human rights. Many people who are close to her or have known her for decades will tell you that she was on the front lines to integrate schools in Queens, fighting for minorities to attain jobs at construction projects like Rochdale Village, fighting tor quality education for the children of Southeast Queens, and advocating for women of all backgrounds to receive equal pay and adequate reproductive rights. These were just a few causes she was passionate about and fought for throughout her life. Senator Huntley continues to lend her feet, hands, and voice to any cause she believes will help improve the quality of life for residents in Southeast Queens, New York City, and the State of New York. I have often stated to my past co-workers and colleagues that Senator Huntley was one of the most outspoken and grounded elected officials in the New York State Legislature. I would observe or hear from her directly about the statements and opinions she would offer in her conference meetings, hearings, the senate floor, or any other forum that allowed her to express her feelings. One thing about Senator Huntley that you quickly grow to admire is that she speaks from the heart and will be brutally honest. She would chastise her former colleagues when it was appropriate for failing to care and address the needs for the most vulnerable in our state. She

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 70 of 80 PageID #: 283

continues to voice her opinion about the current state of our education system and how it is missing the mark to educate our children, especially minorities and the underprivileged. Senator Huntley never walked around the capitol with an ego or feel as if she were entitled to something because of her position. Through my many walks with her to the capitol she would greet and speak with any and all people she met, whether they were a senator or maintenance worker. She never got caught up in the status of being a State Senator and would often make remarks such as "My name has always been Shirley, even before I became a State Senator, why should it change now?" From the very first day I met her, to present day, 1 have always respected how humble Senator Huntley is and that she was not raised in, nor lived a lavish lifestyle. Senator Huntley isn't just a woman of words, but of action as well. As a State Senator she has conducted heart screenings in her district, successfully implemented her annual events such as back to school giveaways, senior luncheons, children and family days, foreclosure workshops, and town hall meetings. She was passionate about helping inform and educate her district through financial literacy workshops, domestic violence seminars, and many other events that could enrich the lives of residents in her community. It is difficult to espouse all the great qualities and characteristics of Senator Huntley in a couple of pages. For over fifty years she has dedicated herself to love and improve the lives of residents in Southeast Queens. In the three and half years that I've known her she has exhibited to me and many others a compassionate, hardworking, humble, and extra-ordinary woman who was ahead of her time. The invaluable experience I gained from working with her enabled me to attain a full scholarship at New England Law, in Boston, Massachusetts. The commilment,

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-2 Filed 05/08/13 Page 71 of 80 PageID #: 284

dedication, and services, Senator Huntley has afforded her community, have been honorable and priceless. Through my relationship with Senator Huntley I believe her character should not be questioned, because her accomplishments, triumphs, and perseverance have already been answered for. Dear Judge Weinstein, I have been a resident and homeowner of Southeast Queens since 1962. In 1978 I met a woman, Shirley Huntley, who moved across the street from me. I have watched Ms. Huntley raise her children into adulthood. I can remember Shirley always being very active in the community. She was involved in the Block Association and has always assisted the children in the community to keep them active and out of trouble. I have found her to be an asset to the community. Dear Judge Weinstein:

I have known Shirley Huntley for more than thirty years. The Huntley family and my family have been neighbors and have shared many experiences. Shirley and her husband Herbert were instrumental in creating a block association for our area. Shirley assisted me in getting my daughter into a more desirable school through her involvement with the New York City public school system. Shirley and Herbert have included me in many of their family activities over the years. Shirley always thinks of me when she has leftovers. Your Honor, Shirley also cares about my physical well-being. T went away in late 2012 and did not return as scheduled. Shirley began calling around to my family to locate me and make sure that I was alright. She is truly a good friend and a good neighbor. Good friends and good neighbors are hard to come by. Judge Weinstein I am asking on my behalf that you allow Shirley to remain at home where she can continue to be to me what she has been for over thirty years: a very dear friend.

Thank you. ~/7 ^its Norman George

Without much ado, the main purpose of this letter is to serve as a character reference for Shirley Huntley. 1 have known Ms. Huntley ail of my life, so I believe that 1 am a great person to speak on behalf of her moral character. Shirley is, in short, a good person. She has always been kind and generous with others. She has a strong sense of duty, which applies in her job, family, and community. Shirley also possesses a great deal of integrity, and constantly strives to make sure she is doing the right thing. It must be difficult for you to make decisions like this when you don't actually know the person standing in front of you, so I hope you will look at my letter and the countless others you're receiving, and understand that Shirley Huntley is the kind of person around whom people rally. That has to say something, so please let that be a factor in your decision.

Thank you, Toi Troy

My wife, Vee, is a minister at the Merrick Park Baptist Church in Jamaica, NY. My family and I have been very active in the church for a number of years. I know Shirley Huntley because of her good works involving the Merrick Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Huntley has long been a supporter of the local churches and, upon becoming a State Senator; she continued to help the Merrick Park Baptist Church by funding the church's summer program. I am requesting that you show God's mercy to Mrs. Huntley at her sentencing. Surely someone that has such a long history in supporting local churches as does Mrs. Huntley deserves another chance. Weinstein United States District Judge Eastern District of New York Re: United States V Shirley Huntley DocketNo:13crS4(JBW) Dear Judge Weinstein: This letter is submitted for your honor's consideration in the sentencing of Shirley Huntley. My name is Van Holmes, I am the President of Young Leaders Institute Inc. and I live in Jamaica, New York. 1 have worked in the community for over 30 years with youth and young adults . I am a good friend of Shirley Huntley and I have known Ms. Huntley for over 10 years. I am writing to humbly share about a person who has committed all of her life to helping others, with a particular focus on helping youth. I first met Mrs. Huntley, when she was president of the Department of Education School Board in district 28. Her outspoken leadership and diligence was responsible for changing how our community educated children in her school district. Many new school building were built under her tenure and leadership. So impressive were the results of her terms as School Board President in Queens District 28, that she remained president for many years. Although our friendship was first connected to our common passion for educating our children in the Jamaica Queens Community, We developed and became great trusting friends. Because of Ms. Huntley's mentorship, I invested full time in assisting our schools and community improve the quality of child care, tutorial and youth development programs in her district. I wish we will focus at the life work and many achievements Mrs. Shirley Huntley has accomplished and achieved and know she is an extremely outstanding citizen. I personally plead to your honor that you consider alt of the many contributions Ms. Shirley Huntley has given to our state and country and grant her no incarceration time. Thank you in advance Van R. Holmes

Dear Judge Weinstein, I write you this missive on behalf of former Senator Shirley Huntley. Placing some light in a dark situation I can attest to the character of Mrs. Huntley as one who always showed sincerity and compassion to those she came in contact with. As an ordained Clergy I often use scripture as point of reference. The scripture that comes to mind as I write this letter comes out of the Book of Romans in the 3rd chapter and the 23rd verse where it says "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." I say that, to say we all deserve a second chance. My involvement in the community allows me to have close and personal relationships with all of the Local elected officials not just in Jamaica, Queens but around New York City. However, there is a certain love that is displayed from the former Senator that others cannot duplicate or imitate. In light of some possible mistakes Mrs. Huntley may have made in the eyes of the law, is still not matched to the support, the revitalization and community building Mrs. Huntley has brought to her district. Honorable Weinstein, I'm sure you see character reference letters by the hundreds, however this letter is to not only tell you how much of a great job Mrs. Huntley has done in the community, but to ask you to be as compassionate to Mrs. Huntley who has been compassionate to so many others. If by any chance I can further assist you, please feel free to contact me at your convenience. May God continue to bless and keep you. Sincerely,

Rev. Philip Craig

Monday April 8,2013 Judge Jack We in stein United States District Court, 225 Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn, NY 11201,

I have known former Senator Shirley Huntley for many years. I became acquainted with her through our work in the community in which we served on several community forums together. She wore many hats at that time. Here, I saw a woman of great integrity and high morals looking out for the future of our youths. During that time, I gained a lot of respect for her involvement in education. She was a good advocate for the schools and youth programs and served on School Board twenty eight for many years, before going to the Senate. She was quite admired for her zest in fighting for quality of life problems in the community. She also worked aggressively for Senior citizens* rights in the centers. In entering the Senate her accomplishments were many: such as the Timothy law which help new Yorkers receive mental health benefits. She also fought for many more laws which showed her dedication and concern for citizens. At this time I appeal to you on her behalf to consider the body of her work throughout the many years of service to her constituents and not focus only on a lapse in judgment that caused her to appear before you.

To the Honorable Judge Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, New York 11201

I Jordan Nichols, have been a resident of South East Queens all of my life. T have served on many community, church and political organizations. These include The Church Ushers Association (CUA), Community Board 12 , Mayors Youth Leadership Council (MYLC) , Borough Student Advisory Council (BSAC) and South East Queens County Young Democrats (SEQCYD) just to name a few. Throughout my young years I have heard of the phenomenal women Shirley Huntley. I had the opportunity of finally meeting her during a SEQCYD bi-weekly session when she was the keynote speaker. Its impossible to forget this day, for young people all across South East Queens was educated on the duties of a State Senator. The fruits of her labor surely have shown in this community. Mrs. Huntley was the only elected official that fought to pass the "Dignity for all Students Act". It is a kept secret but had that law not been passed , lives of students would have been taken. My heart aches to know that such a sweet,

outstanding woman of God is in this predicament and being charged. I do not know how the Community will uphold without Mrs. Huntley's presence. I do ask of you to please be lenient to her sentence. I am grateful for your time and consideration.

With Peace Love and Joy, Jordan Nichols

Honorable Judge J. Weinstein

This letter comes to ask your thoughtful consideration regarding the matter of State Senator Shirley Huntley. She has proven to be a stallworth member of our community despite her sudden mishap with state funds and gross mis-management to which I ask for your leniency. I humbly ask that you pardon her latest misfortune within the state government. I currently serve as the political action chair of the Queenschapter of the National Action Network under the auspices of the illustrious Rev. Dr Alfred Sharpton and Pastor Phil Craig our chapter president. I greatly appreciate your wisdom in this heartfelt matter.

The Honorable Judge Jack Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein,

My name is Herbert Huntley and I am the husband of Shirley Huntley. I would like to give you a little background on our life together. Shirley and I first met in Riverhead, NY when we were teenagers. We began dating and were subsequently married. Shirley and I have been married for fifty three years. We have stayed strong through good times and bad. Shirley and I had three children. Unfortunately, our oldest child, Robert, died two years ago. Our son, Herbert, is an Army veteran with three children and four grandchildren. Herbert is happily married to his wife, Vanessa. Our daughter, Pamala, is also happily married to Edward Corley. They have one child, Taylor. Unfortunately, Pamala has recently had a health issue. Pamala was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm in January 2103. She was very lucky because she suffered an initial brain bleed with no ill affects. We now find that the aneurysm is small but still there. The doctors tried a coil procedure in February 2013 but were unable to reach the aneurysm due to its precarious location. Pamala is scheduled to undergo another procedure in the near future and if, God forbid, the procedure is not successful, she will have to undergo a very delicate brain surgery. Shirley and I also have five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren of whom we are very proud. Your Honor, Shirley and I do not have an extravagant lifestyle. We stay close to home and family. Our last vacation was a cruise to the Bahamas in the 1980s. Shirley and I spend our time going to community functions, church, dinner and visiting friends. Our social life picked up when Shirley became a Senator but it is very different when you have to attend affairs even when you don't want to.

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-4 Filed 05/08/13 Page 2 of 9 PageID #: 305

Shirley is my rock and I like to believe that I am hers. I have survived several health issues such as a heart attack, lymphoma and diabetes. Shirley has been my doctor, my nurse and my friend. I do not think that I would have made it without her love, support and care. Shirley never let me get discouraged or give up. I also help Shirley with her

health issues such as hypertension and sciatica.

While I am extremely proud of Shirley's accomplishments as a community activist, School Board President and a State Senator, I will leave it to others to list her many achievements. I am, however, most proud of her accomplishments as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and soul mate.

Surprisingly, I don't think that I have yet told you how much I love Shirley. Shirley is the best wife that any man could have. We have a strong marriage that many of our younger friends look to as a role model. Our marriage has withstood the stress of raising a family, death and illness. We, of course, have our disagreements but we always work things out. I must admit that the case before you has caused us much stress and depression. Your Honor, Shirley and I have never been separated for more than a few nights when I was hospitalized and even then we were able to see each other every day. I honestly do not believe that I can live without her nor do I believe that she can live without me. Our two lives are really one. I live for her and she lives for me. I am terrified at the thought of being without her.

Judge Weinstein, Shirley and I are not youngsters. I will be seventy-six years old in April and Shirley will be seventy-five in June. We both recognize that we are much closer to the end than to the beginning. Please allow us to spend the rest of our remaining years together. Please grant her another chance for both our sakes. Please allow Shirley to remain at home with me and the rest of our family.

Thank you sincerely,

March 28,2013 Judge Jack Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Re: United States v. Shirley Huntley

Dear Judge Weinstein, My name is Pamala Huntley-Corley. My mother is Shirley Huntley. 1 must admit that I am crying as I write this letter. To hear, read or say the United States v. Shirley Huntley is very painful to me. To think that this country is prosecuting my mother is beyond belief. Of course, I am biased. I love my mother without end and without reservation. I am the youngest of my parents' three children. I am their "baby". My oldest brother, Robert, died two years ago. Our family had to come together in support of one and other after his death. My brother's death was very hard on us all but it was even harder on my mother. Her first born child had predeceased her. My mother has always said that the parents should not outlive the children. Your Honor, my mother means everything to me. My mother has always supported me and, perhaps more importantly, she has always disciplined me when I needed it. My mother has provided me with the model that I use to raise my own daughter, Taylor. I speak to my mother several times a day and I see her all the time because we only live three miles apart. The fact that we live so close to each other is no coincidence. I want and need to live close to my mother. The most time that I have ever spent away from my mother is when I have gone on vacation and, even then, I spoke to her every day. My daughter, Taylor, has also developed a strong bond with my mother. I know that Taylor has already written a letter to you on behalf of her grandmother and I was so moved when she read her letter to me. Judge Weinstein, I am requesting that you show mercy on my mother for my own selfish reasons. I was diagnosed with Lupus several years ago and my mother has been my support system. In addition, I have a brain aneurysm. I suffered a brain bleed in January 2013. My doctors state that the aneurysm was most likely caused by the stress of my mother's situation. I was extremely lucky in that I did not suffer any ill effects from the bleed. However, a part of the aneurysm still remains and needs to be removed. I was hospitalized for three weeks and underwent a coil procedure in late January 2013. Unfortunately, the doctor was unable to reach the aneurysm. I am scheduled to have a repeat procedure on April 2,2013 and am hoping for a successful removal of the aneurysm. If the procedure is not successful, I will have to undergo brain surgery because the aneurysm must be removed. I am sure that I don't have to tell you that brain

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-4 Filed 05/08/13 Page 4 of 9 PageID #: 307

surgery is a very complicated and there are no guarantees. I need my mother to continue to be with me through all of this. I need to know that my mother is going to be there to care for me during my recovery from either the procedure or the surgery. I acknowledge that my mother is not perfect. No one is perfect. My mother has always been a strong woman but I see a difference in her since this case. My mother tries to be strong for the public but I see beneath the surface. Your Honor, my mother is afraid for me and what I am facing but I also see in her face the fear she has because she does not know what is going to happen to her in you Court. Judge Weinstein, I am begging you to help a whole family. Please allow my mother to remain at home. I will watch her while she helps to take care of me during my convalescence. My mother has so many people depending on her and the burden is very heavy. I am concerned that both my mother's health and her will to live will fail if you send her away for any period of time. My family's need for my mother far outweighs any need to punish her. My mother is our heart, our soul and our anchor. Please, show mercy on me and my family by showing mercy on my mother. I would like to speak with you providing that my health permits. You can contact me at 917-297-5305.

Sincerely,

Pamala Huntley-Corley

The Honorable Jack Weinstein, Judge, United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein:

My name is Herbert Huntley Jr. and I am the son of Shirley Huntley. My mother is presently before your Court. Your Honor, my mother has always loved me unconditionally. While I was growing up in Jamaica, Queens my mother would warn me about hanging out in the street. My mother would tell me that I should find something constructive to do with my life and she suggested that I enlist in the United States Army. I took my mother's advice and joined the Army. I remained in the Army for twenty-two years (19802002) and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. I was stationed in places like Korea, Hawaii and Texas. My mother and I kept in close telephone contact no matter where I was stationed. I would reach out to my mother if I was feeling homesick and talking to her always cheered me up. My mother kept me motivated and dedicated to this great country. My mother gave me the strength that I needed to handle both wartime and peacetime. I returned to New York after retiring from the Army. My mother and I continue our very close relationship and, even more importantly, I am able to see her whenever I want. Unfortunately, I did not leave the Army without scars. I have been diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and I am under a doctor's care. Your Honor, I beg you, to please have mercy on my mother. The incarceration of my mother would destroy me. I rely on my mother for mental and moral support. Please don't take her away from me, Your Honor, I will take full responsibility for my mother. Please have mercy on both my mother and me instead put her on probation or require her to complete community service. I'm available to talk with you, if more information is needed, feel free to call me at home at 212-866-4755 or on my cell phone at 718-852-7492. Sincerely,

Hello Judge Weinstein, My name is Taylor Mariah Corley and I am thirteen years old. I am in the eighth grade at Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School. I am writing you about Shirley Huntley. Shirley Huntley is my grandmother but I call her "Ma". I love Ma very much and I am very proud of her. I did not just become proud of her when she became a New York State Senator. I have always been proud of Ma. My family tells me stories about the important things that Ma did when she was younger. I have seen pictures of Ma at important events and with famous people like Jesse Jackson. I have pictures of Ma in my room and I take pictures of her to my school. I am most proud of Ma because she is a very good grandmother. Ma loves me a lot. She and my grandfather take me places and do things with me. We live near each other so I am able to see Ma a lot. On the days that I don't see her I talk to her on the telephone. Ma talks to be about how I am doing in school and she gets on me when I am not doing as well as I should. Ma is strict with me but she loves me and always forgives me. I am not completely sure what all this Court stuff is about. Ma spoke to me when she was about to be arrested because she did not want me to see it on television and be scared. I cried when she told me. Ma said that she had made a mistake and that she had to accept responsibility for what she had done. I was very sad but proud because Ma has always told me that I have to admit when I do wrong and accept responsibility. I do not want to take up too much more of your time but I want to ask you a favor. Please do not take Ma away from me. I need to be able to see her and talk to her. I do not know what I would do without her. Also I am concerned about my grandfather and my mother. They are very sad about what is happening to Ma. My grandfather and Ma have been together for over fifty years and I am afraid that my grandfather will get sick without Ma around. Also, my mother has been sick lately and she was in the hospital for about three weeks. My mother has to go back in the hospital soon and I know that she is very worried about her health and about Ma. My mother needs Ma to be there for her. Please help us Judge Weinstein. While I am writing this letter for my Ma it is really more for me. Please do not take Ma away from me. Please give her another chance. If

you let Ma stay at home I will be responsible for her and take care of her. Please forgive my Ma the way that she forgives me and the way that God forgives us all.

Thank you tylor Marian Corley Ps: I would like to speak with you Judge if it will help Ma.

The Honorable Judge Jack B. Weinstein United States District Court 225 Cadman Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11201 Dear Judge Weinstein: My name is Lynn H. Smith and I am the maternal niece of Shirley L. Huntley. Mrs. Huntley is presently before your Court after pleading guilty to Mail Fraud. I would like to take a little of your time to tell you some things about my aunt. Aunt Shirley and I have a very close relationship. In truth, we have been more like mother and daughter rather than aunt and niece. When my mother died in 1993 my Aunt Shirley was there for me. I moved into her home in 1995 on a temporary basis and I am still living there with her and my Uncle Herb to this day. I cannot imagine my life without seeing my aunt on a daily basis. My Aunt Shirley has always been a community activist. As a child I remember her sporting a huge afro and going on protest marches. Aunt Shirley moved into more mainstream community activism when she became the Director of the Federation of Laurelton Youth, Inc. program. Her political ambition grew and she ran for and was elected a member of the District 28 Community School Board. Aunt Shirley subsequently was named the President of the School Board by her colleagues. After my aunt's tenure on the School Board she, seemingly, settled into a life of community activism outside of the political arena. Your Honor I was surprised and somewhat dismayed when, in the spring of 2006, community leaders asked my Aunt Shirley to run for State Senator of the 10th Senate District. To be clear, I was somewhat dismayed because my aunt was 68 years old at the time and I was concerned for her health. Never once did I doubt that my Aunt Shirley would be a good Senator if elected. To our surprise, my Aunt Shirley defeated Ada Smith, the eighteen year incumbent, in the 2006 September Primary and became the new Senator of the 10 District. After initial baby steps, I saw my Aunt Shirley come into her own as a Senator. Aunt Shirley made her family, friends and the entire community proud. For six years my aunt represented the people of both the 10th Senate District and the State of New York with distinction. Aunt Shirley passed needed legislation and remained connected to her neighbors, friends and community.

Case 1:13-cr-00054-JBW Document 24-4 Filed 05/08/13 Page 9 of 9 PageID #: 312

Your Honor it hurts me deeply to have to write to you under these circumstances. I recognize that my Aunt Shirley is only human and that mistakes have been made. Aunt Shirley has acknowledged the mistakes and taken responsibility for her actions. There are no words to describe to you the depth of the feelings that I have for my aunt. However, I would also like you to know that many people in the community feel for my aunt as I do. Aunt Shirley has resided in the same community for over forty years and she has fought for that community tirelessly. Whether people know my aunt as "Shirley", "Mrs. Huntley", "Mom" or "Senator Huntley", I am always amazed by the affection that they feel for her. When I am with Aunt Shirley in public I am always overwhelmed by the positive reception that she receives. Although she is no longer a Senator and, despite her current legal woes, she receives calls for assistance every day. In addition, Aunt Shirley receives daily calls of support from friends, neighbors and people that she does not even know. Aunt Shirley has always been there for her neighbors and they continue to look to her for guidance and support as well as showing her overwhelming support and love. I am humbly requesting a second chance for by Aunt Shirley and that you allow her to remain in the community that she has served so unselfishly for over forty years. Yes, I want and need my aunt at home for me but the community needs her also. I truly believe that removing Aunt Shirley from the community for any length of time would have a negative effect on both her and her family, friends, neighbors and community. If there is a penance to be paid by my Aunt Shirley, please allow her to pay it in the community thaishe has aided for so long. At least that way everyone will benefit. Again, I request that you allow my aunt to remain with us in the community where she can continue to support; us while we support her.

Sincere!
