PCC XL Pathways First Year Coach Job Description

First Year Coaches (FYCs) are paraprofessional staff members for the PCC XL Pathways first-year experience program. They will work within the Division of Student Learning Services and the Teaching and Learning Center and will be directed and supervised by the Counseling/Case Management Team leader. First Year Coaches assist program students with moving through one of the most transformative years of their livestheir first year of college. This includes supporting the students adjustment to the academic and social expectations and culture of college life. Maturity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and a strong work ethic are prerequisites for this position. Successful FYCs are also knowledgeable of and sensitive to not only the needs of a diverse and academically underprepared student population, but are also attuned to how they may be received by members of this population. Thus, FYCs are adept at developing interpersonal relationships with and between students with this background. The successful FYC possesses strong communication and leadership skills and a positive view of the community college and its staff. They conduct themselves in a professional manner and model positive behavior consistent with the mission of the PCC Pathways program. They are also able to work well with diverse instructional and counseling professors and other college staff members. These are temporary positions based on grant funding and successful evaluations. The minimal commitment time is one year. This is a five year grant and we are about to enter the third year. FYCs will work 20 hours per week. These positions will begin with training on July 22nd. The first week with students will begin with our first year student summer orientation cycle, which begins August 5th and goes to August 23rd. After the summer orientation sessions, fall semester begins August 26th. The 2013/2014 school year will end around May 2nd, 2014, unless campus administration makes other plans. The work to review the year and prepare in earnest for the following school year will begin at the conclusion of the spring term. 20 hours per week at $19.00/hour, max per year 900 hours

Examples of Duties:

1. Closely monitor and communicate consistently with approximately 180-200 students in the PCC XL Pathways program during the fall semester, and gradually reduce contact over the course of the spring semester. Communication will be primarily via face-to-face interactions, but also via phone, email, texting and Internet as necessary. 2. Act as an informed referral source throughout the academic year, including accompanying students to various resources as needed. Support students in acquiring and understanding regular course status reports. 3. Guide/collaborate with students to follow-through on tasks in order to benefit from the resources and their professors.

4. Participate in /lead program seminars, workshops and other presentations. 5. Coach students in effective goal setting, time management, learning strategies and exam preparation. 6. Maintain detailed student contact logs in the program database. 7. Collaborate with fellow First Year coaches to develop supplemental projects. 8. Initiate appropriate individual projects based on student and program needs. 9. Attend regular meetings and training sessions. 10. Perform appropriate clerical duties as necessary. 11. Support the activities of the PCC XL Pathways program as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelors degree or its equivalent. Candidates should be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate program in relevant majors such as psychology, counseling, sociology or social work. Knowledge and Abilities: 1. Excellent communications skills: listening, responding, presenting, handling and resolving conflict. 2. Understand the needs of and have experience working with recent urban high school graduates who are predominantly underprepared for college demands. 3. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff. Ability to work with committees and to plan workshops. 4. Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality. 5. Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity and academic excellence. 6. Resourcefulness. 7. Ability to learn PCCs processes, policies and support systems and website tools. 8. Knowledge of research techniques. Course work in psychology, counseling, group dynamics and guidance. Experience making group presentations. Experience working in a team. Strong knowledge of the community college system and its mission.
