Years of hard work by the Council, Harlesden Town Team, local residents and businesses are finally about to pay off. Contractors are mobilising and works to improve your town centre will begin soon. How will this affect the Town? Only Buses will be able to drive along the High Street between the Jubilee Clock and Tavistock Road between 10 oclock in the morning and 4 oclock in the afternoon. Outside of these times loading and unloading will be permitted to and from the shops. All other traffic will be diverted along High Street towards Park Parade and along Manor Park Road which will be partly changed to two way traffic.
BackgroundHow have we got here? Since 2010 Brent Council has worked closely with the Harlesden Town Team to promote positive change in Harlesden. This partnership resulted in the publication of the Harlesden Town Charter which sets out a vision for improving the area over the next 10 to 15 years. The charter helped secure some 4 million worth of funding from Transport for London to make major improvements to the town centre. With the help of the local community we have considered many options to improve the town centre. In March 2012 following an extensive consultation with residents, businesses and other interested parties the Highways Committee approved a scheme which will provide a semi pedestrianized area along the High Street between the Jubilee Clock and Tavistock Road. What will it look like?
The scheme will provide a cleaner, brighter and more pedestrian friendly environment with areas of open space for people to sit and socialise. There will more seating and more trees and unnecessary street clutter will be taken away.
Wider and better pavements will be built so that cafes and restaurants can spill out on to the street. More space will encourage farmers and specialised markets into Harlesden. The town will become more vibrant - similar developments have encouraged empty shops to be filled with increased variety. More parking will be available for shoppers as cars will park for shorter times. Parking in residential streets will prioritise residents and other permit holders. Disabled drivers will benefit from special parking spaces.
