1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

State the Fourier's law of conduction. A temperature difference of 500C is applied across a fire-clay brick. 10 cm thick was having a thermal conductivity of 1.0 W/m.K. Find the heat transfer rate per unit area. Explain the different modes of heat transfer. State the applications of extended surfaces. Define fin efficiency and effectiveness. Part B (16*2+1*8=40 Marks)

6.

Derive expression of general heat conduction equation for Cartesian coordinate with a neat sketch. (16 Marks) (OR) Circumferential aluminium fins of rectangular profile (1.5 cm. wide and 1 mm thick) are fitted on to a 90 mm engine cylinder with a pitch of 10 mm. The height of the cylinder is 120 mm. The cylinder base temperature before and after fitting the fins are 200C and 150C respectively. Take ambient at 30C and h (average) = 100 W/m2K. Estimate the heat dissipated from the finned and the un-finned surface areas of cylinder body. (16 Marks) (a) A composite wall consists of 10 cm Thick layer of building brick, k = 0.7 W/mK and 3 cm thick plaster, k = 0.5 W/mK. An insulating material of k = 0.08 W/mK is to be added to reduce the heat transfer through the wall by 40%. Find its thickness. (8 Marks)

(b) A steam pipe is covered with two layers of insulation , first layer being 3 cm thick and second 5 cm. the pipe is made of steel (k=58 W/mK) having ID of 160 mm and OD of 170 mm. The inside and outside film coefficients are 30 and 5,8 W/m 2K respectively. Calculate the heat lost per meter of pipe, if the steam temperature is 300C and air is 50C. The thermal conductivity of two insulating materials is 0.17 and 0.093 W/mK respectively. (8 Marks) (OR)

9.

A composite slap is made of three layers 15 cm, 10 cm and 12 cm thickness respectively. The first layer is made of material with k= 1.45 W/mK , for 60% of the area and rest of material with k=2.5 W/mK . The second layer is made of material with k=12.5 W/mK for 50% of area and rest of material with k=18.5 W/mK . The third layer is made of single material of k=0.76 W/mK . The composite slap is exposed on one side to warm at 26C and cold air at- 20C. The inside heat transfer transfer coefficient is 15W/m2K. The outside heat transfer coefficient is 20W/m2K determine heat flow rate and interface temperatures. (16 Marks)

10.

A steel tube with 5cm ID, 7.6cm OD and k= 15W/m 0C is covered with an insulative covering of thickness 2cm and k= 0.2W/m 0C. A hot gas at 330 0C with h=400 W/m20C flows inside the tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed to cooler air at 30 0C with h= 60 W/m 20C.Calculate the heat loss from the tube to the air for 10m of the tube and the temperature drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel tube, the insulation layer and the outside air. (8 Marks) (OR) What do you understand by critical radius of insulation, obtain an expression for the same. (8 Marks)
