The Unique Iden ca on Number is a unique 12 digit number that will store informa on like an individual's name, face and biometric scans.

Unique Identification Authority of India


The Unique Iden ca on Authority of India (UIDAI) is an agency of the Government of India responsible for implemen ng the envisioned Mul purpose Na onal Iden ty Card or Unique Iden ca on card (UID Card) project in India. It was established in February 2009, and will own and operate the Unique Iden ca on Number database. The authority will aim at providing a unique number to all Indians, but not smart cards. The authority would provide a database of residents containing very simple data in biometrics. The agency is headed by a chairman, holds a cabinet rank. The UIDAI is part of the Planning Commission of India. Nandan Nilekani, a former co-chairman of Infosys Technologies, was appointed as the rst Chairman of the authority in June 2009. Ram Sewak Sharma, an IAS Ocer of Jharkhand Government cadre has been appointed as the Director General and Mission Director of the Authority. He is known for his best eort in e-Governance project for Jharkhand State and working as an IT secretary he received a number of awards for best Informa on Technology Trends State in India.

It is believed that Unique Naonal IDs will help address the rigged state elec ons, widespread embezzlement that affects subsidies and poverty allevia on programs such as NREGA. As the unique iden ty database comes into existence, the various iden ty databases (voter ID, passports, ra on cards, licenses, shing permits, border area id cards) that already exist in India are planned to be linked to it. The Authority is liaising with various naonal, state and local government en es to begin this process. The Union Labor Ministry has oered its veried Employment Provident Fund (EPFO) database of 42 million ci zens as the rst database to be integrated into the unique ID system. Other UID projects implemented on a smaller scale in India can also facilitate in the development of the na onal project. An example is a project developed by Wolf Frameworks Cloud Compu ng vendor and Social Educa on and Development Society (SEDS) for proling and genera ng Unique Iden ca on for more than 40,000 members in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. The UID will link a person's Passport Number, Driving License, PAN card, Bank Accounts, Address, Voter ID etc and all this informa on will be checked through a database.
