Question 1 a) Draw a diagram that illustrates what software is operational in the two hardware tiers of thin client within a two tier client server solutions. Briefly describe the data transferred over the network and indicate a possible protocol for this solution. 12 marks b) Draw a diagram that illustrates what software is operational in the two hardware tiers of fat client within a two tier client server solutions. Briefly describe the data transferred over the network and indicate a possible protocol for this solution. 12 marks

c) Compare the manner in which Visual Display Units operate on mainframe computers in block mode with the operation of Visual Display Units attached to mini computers. 6 marks

Question 2 All questions refer to Microsoft Visual Basic a) What is meant by the event-driven paradigm and assess its significance to the development of GUI interfaces. Your answer should include references to events other than those generated by the user. 12 marks b) Indicate how the event-driven design of a client-server program can be documented 10 marks c) Distinguish between connection-based and connectionless data transmission between two Visual Basic programs, and indicate the role of the Bind method in connectionless data transmission. 8 marks

a) What are the advantages of using a transaction processing monitor (TPM) such as Tuxedo or Microsoft Transaction Server in terms of development effort and operational efficiency. 12 marks b) Indicate the nature of data flow between each of the hardware tiers in a three tier clientserver solution and draw a diagram to illustrate what software is operational in each of the three tiers. 8 marks Question 4 a) Provide examples of HTML and XML and comment on the significant differences. 6 marks b) Explain how the contents of an XML document can be processed within a language such as Visual Basic 7 marks c) Describe the basic features of a system developed with groupware, and contrast this style of solution with that found in traditional programs. 7 marks

Question 5 a) Indicate the characteristics of a business solution that are solved with the Biztalk package. 8 marks
