INVESTIGAnON
During the investigation of this case several sources were utilized in compiling a timeline of the many different events
which occurred at Columbine High School 011 April 20, 1999. 11:Lill included dispatch and 911 tapes from the Jefflersoll
County Sheriff's Office, dispatch tapes from the Littleton Fire Department, newscasts from local medis and fire alarm
and videotape from Columbine High School. As the timeline was being complied it became apparent that many of the
times from the different sources were not synchronized
During the first two weeks of the investigation I learned that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had recently calibrated
their digital clocks used for dispatch tapes to the Atomic Clock at the National Institute of Standards Technology.
Therefore, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office dispatch time was the standard used for the timeline. I further learned
that the 91 I times had not yet been calibrated and were fast by 2 minutes and 46 seconds. The Littleton Fire Department
dispatch time Was 4 minutes slow and then fire alarm from Columbine High School was 3 minutes slow. The cafeteria
'deotape matched the Sheriff's Office and therefore no adjustments were necessary.
In order to accurately reflect the events, it became necessary to adjust the times so that they were synchronized to one
time, in this case the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office dispatch time. The following changes were made and are
reflected in the finished timeline,
