Driver line-up with Le Mans victories
When the victorious Audi squad travelled home from
LeMans in June it had achieved a percent ratio:
each of the nine drivers had won the -hour race at least
once. Up to and including the Audi driver squad at that
time could boast Le Mans victories.
The race squad has grown yet again this year because Audi
competes with four instead of three race cars at Le Mans.
Marco Bonanomi is no longer test driver but in fact race
driver. Oliver Jarvis moves from the DTM driver line-up to
the sports car squad. Loc Duval, as newcomer, drives for
Audi for the rst time and Marc Gen was signed as new
reserve driver. As a result an extremely experienced and
strong team joins the grid. Many of their names can already
be found in the winners list of the worlds endurance
classics times in Le Mans, times in Sebring, ten
times in the Petit Le Mans race and just as often in the
Nrburgring , three times in the Spa Hours and twice
in the Daytona Hours.
Last years winners Marcel Fssler/Andr Lotterer/Benot
Trluyer share the Audi R e-tron quattro with start
number at Le Mans this year. The successful Le Mans
drivers Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish,
who compete with the number , also rely on the hybrid
technology. Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, who crossed
the nish line rst at Le Mans in , start with Loc Duval
as new team mate. Their Audi R ultra carries number.
Mike Rockenfeller, one of the winners in , forms a
team with Oliver Jarvis and Marco Bonanomi. They drive the
number Audi R ultra. The exact driver line-up in the
WEC after Le Mans will only be dened during the season.
All the cars are elded by Audi Sport Team Joest.
Marc Cen has been

With eight Le Mans victories to his
name the Dane is long since a legend:
no other driver has won the classic,
staged since , so often. He also
heads the all-time winners list for
the Sebring Hours after having won
the event six times. No question: Tom
Kristensen, who came to Audi twelve
years ago, can look back over a unique
success record in sports cars.
... he has celebrated many victories

Joest and Audi have celebrated eight wins together at Le Mans
First class platform for the most
advanced racing cars
For the rst time since the Fdration Internationale
de lAutomobile, FIA, stages a World Championship for
sports cars. The new FIA World Endurance Championship,
WEC, is regarded as ground breaking category in
motorsport: In no other World Championship do so many
dierent technical solutions compete against one another.
And nowhere else must the various concepts overcome
such long distances as here. Around , kilometers are
covered at Le Mans.
Always in focus: the most ecient solution. Even three
decades ago the sports car regulations rewarded pioneering
technologies with consumption guidelines. Audi also has
also consistently backed eciency. The introduction of
TFSI gasoline direct injection in and TDI technology
in are two development milestones from which
production also beneted.
In spite of the common organization the single events
preserve their individual character: Six, twelve and
hours these are the race distances in the World
Endurance Championship. As a result, the two traditional
events, the Sebring Hours and Le Mans Hours, are

a part of the World Championship as are six other races
staged over a common length of six hours.
While the LMP prototypes like the Audi race car ght
for a dedicated manufacturer title, the smaller prototype
class LMP as well as GTE cars are also admitted. These
classes also ght for their own titles. The Drivers World
Championship remains an overall classication for all
participants.
Points are awarded in line with an essentially well
established pattern, with exceptions however: As in other
FIA championships points are awarded as follows to the
rst ten nishers ---------. All other
cars classied at the nish receive half a point. Double
points are awarded for the Le Mans Hours. Another
point is awarded for the pole sitter in every class. In the
manufacturers classication only the best placed car of
any automobile manufacturer is eligible. The best six
results including the Le Mans Hours count, promising
excitement all the way to the nale in Shanghai.
Audi demonstrates its Vorsprung durch Technik with three
dierent models in the World Endurance Championship: the
Audi R ultra impresses through its uncompromising ultra
lightweight design and construction. The Audi R e-tron
quattro is the brands rst Le Mans Prototype with four-
wheel drive. Audi still relied on last years Le Mans winning
R TDI at the season opener in Sebring and celebrated a
one-two nish in Florida. Audi Sport Team Joest elds all
the Audi sports prototypes mentioned in every round of the
World Endurance Championship .
In 2D12 the WEC races in eight countries,
distributed between North and 5ound America,
Europe, the MiddIe and Far East
The points system promises excitement to the nal lap

Sebring (LSA)
Dindo CapeIIo
Sebring is a traditional circuit with many loyal fans and
unusual conditions. The track is comprised alternatively of
very old concrete slabs and tarmac. This is very noticeable
after the start and nish line. At Turn you drive from wide
concrete to narrow tarmac and this in fth gear. In Turn
there are even three dierent types of tarmac. The bumps
are also a typical characteristic, which is why the car is very
nervous under braking for corner . There are also plenty of
fast sections. Turns and can be taken at out. The same
also goes for corner which is actually just a kink but not
in trac otherwise things get a little tight. Turn to end
the lap is mega. We approach at km/h. The tarmac is
unique and despite the width at this point there is only one
fast line. Thats typical Sebring.

Spa (B)
Romain Dumas
Even at the start of the lap Spa reveals its extreme
dierences. The rst corner, La Source, is a hairpin where
you can easily lock the inside front wheel. Immediately after
comes the downhill section towards the Raidillon-Eau Rouge
sector. In a good car this is taken at out. You dont see the
exit of the corner over the brow. Then comes the next key
section: the straight is ideal for slipstreaming. You can still
overtake before the track gets narrower. The double left
Pouhon is exciting. You brake for the rst part; the second
part is taken at full throttle. The run back towards the pits is
incredibly fast. In fourth gear you turn onto a straight that
leads towards the Blanchimont corner which in turn is taken
in sixth gear. Spa is my favorite European circuit.

I dreamt about Le Mans as a child. Its something very
special and for this reason it was just amazing to win
here with Audi in . Simply put: there is absolutely
everything you would want around the kilometers. For
example many heavy braking zones. After the start-nish
straight you shift back down into second gear. Before the
two chicanes on the Hunaudires straight we brake from
well over km/h to about km/h. Two more dicult
parts follow: braking for Mulsanne is not easy because
the braking zone runs exactly through a kink. Indianapolis
is also very challenging. The best part of the track is the
Porsche curves. After the right in fth gear then full throttle
in the rst left, dab the brakes, the long right in fourth gear
and into the Karting Corner which is o camber.

Ten viccries in reccrd ine
No other manufacturer has won the Le Mans Hours
so often in such a short space of time after its debut. The
classic on the Sarthe has been staged since ; Audi
competes with great success since .
Audi is in the fast lane: the Le Mans winner presents itself
with an outstanding sporting record to coincide with the
th running of the endurance classic. Between and
the Audi Sport team from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm
has been awarded the winners trophy ten times. From
starts since this results in a victory ratio of almost
percent. More still: no other manufacturer has posted
such an impressive series directly after its Le Mans debut.
Audi has overhauled Ferrari and now stands alone in second
position in the all-time winners list.
Audi even won a trophy on its debut in a strong eld of
starters. An Audi RR nished third rst time out in .
A year later Audi celebrated overall victory for the rst
time. The newly developed Audi R claimed a one-two-three
nish on its debut.
Audi set the next milestone in . The victorious R was
equipped for the rst time with a TFSI engine with gasoline
direct injection. Although the trophy was conceived as
challenge cup, Audi was able to keep it for the rst time
in after Frank Biela/Tom Kristensen/Emanuele Pirro
claimed a third consecutive victory with Audi Sport Team
Joest.
In and win numbers four and ve followed for
the R sports prototype. Tom Kristensen was at the wheel
of the R for all of its ve victories. The Dane is lonely
record holder at Le Mans with no less than eight overall
victories.
A diesel sports car won for the rst time on the Sarthe
during the season. The Audi R TDI of Frank Biela/

Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish scooped
the TDI hat-trick in . In the historians leafed
frantically through the history books: when the R TDI

record by .kilometers. Marcel Fssler/Andr Lotterer/
Benot Trluyer recorded Audis tenth victory last year in the

Silverstone is the home of British motorsport. Just after
the pit buildings there is a fast right leading into a long
left hand curve which in turn leads into a very tight section.
After the next straight the track makes a gentle turn to the
left and then again degrees to the right. The right hand
kink towards the old start-nish straight is full throttle,
which you hold to Copse corner. The famous, extremely
quick left-right-left Maggots, Becketts combination follows.
You can overtake relatively easily going into the fast right at
the end of the long back straight. After a short straight you
brake hard for the tight chicane, then left, right and back
onto the start and nish. The circuit is fantastic and Im
delighted that the World Championship races here.

There are several crucial sections at Interlagos. The start
and nish is at the crest of a long climb. On the way down to
the rst corner you have to stay right for a long time before
cutting left across to the apex on the inside. We hold the
inside line on the exit of the corner in order to take the next
right hander perfectly. This also a good place to overtake,
which is followed by the long left onto the back straight.
A trick section is the double right behind the pits. A super
fast entry is followed in the second part by a blind apex.
Afterwards there is a sequence of three slow turns right,
left and right. To nish the third part of the track with the
last corner which is deceptively slow, slippery and runs
uphill.

At . kilometers the start-nish straight in Bahrain is
incredibly long. You have to brake heavily approaching the
tight rst corner. Afterwards its full throttle through a left
that leads onto a long straight. Its a good place to overtake
on the run down to the third corner. Then we turn onto the
long circuit, which has several tight corners. Back onto the
GP track and into the fast S curves where its easy to lose
downforce if you are in the pack. Braking hard for the next
right is a good place to overtake. After a hairpin follow the
back straight and a fast right-left bend. The lateral forces
push the car towards the outside under braking for the
penultimate right hand corner. You can overtake again on
the way to the nal corner. In addition to the heat, the sand
is the main issue in the desert.

Fuji (])

At rst glance Fuji looks quite easy, but it is actually quite
dicult to drive. You need low drag for the . kilometer
long straight, but for the quick corners lots of downforce.
The rst right is very tight. Afterwards there is a fast left
the A Corner, which is a real challenge. The section runs
into the long R. Several lines and apexes are possible
here. It is quick and you have a good view of Mount Fuji.
This is followed by a hairpin bend. You have to get good
acceleration into the long drawn-out, lightly kinked uphill
straight which leads into a tight chicane. To nish the most
challenging section: an o-camber right hand bend, then
two lefts where the apexes are dicult to nd and then
another right. I like the track. Slipstreaming often plays a
crucial role.

Shanghai is new for everybody. There are is a lot of hard
braking, but also sections where the highest speed is
reached. Well approach the rst corner at about km/h.
It turns right and gets tighter and tighter. You have to take
as much speed as possible into the corner. This is followed
by a hairpin to the left. Turns and are a double right
section. The long, long left-right section immediately after
looks very challenging. You have to shift down to second
gear for the double left. This is followed by a straight that
leads into a left corner. The section opens into a never
ending long right corner that leads onto the longest
straight. At the end you have to brake down to km/h.
Then a nal time to the left and back across the nish line.
