Audi in customer racing

Two new models for customers in America, Asia, Europe and Australia
Initiated in 2009, the customer racing program has long since acquired a global dimension: as intended by Audi Sport customer racing from the outset, importer and customer teams from across the world now rely on the Audi R8 LMS and with great success. No less than six championship titles were collected during the 2011 season. Teams racing the Audi R8 LMS have already celebrated a total of 13 titles. More than 40 examples of the GT3 race car were delivered so far. Throughout the 2012 season this number should increase to 70. quattro GmbH has developed two new models for the current year: the Audi R8 LMS ultra with improvements in many areas is a comprehensively developed successor to the R8 LMS. With the Audi R8 GRAND-AM a version is available for the North American GRAND-AM championship for the first time. Furthermore, in China a unique one-make Cup is held for the Audi R8 LMS. As many as 16 cars are expected to join the grid. The rapid development of customer racing activities shows that we chose the right approach at the right time, stresses Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH. To keep our finger on the pulse the two new models were developed specifically for customer wishes and according to market demands. They lead the way into an exciting future. quattro GmbH offers many other services in addition to the development and distribution of racing cars. Customer

The brands clients contested no less than 179 individual races worldwide last season. For the first time in 2012 the WRT team even fights for World Championship honors in GT racing with the Audi R8 LMS ultra. While customers are the focus of attention, Audi also uses the R8 LMS for two great endurance races the 24-hour races at the Nrburgring and Spa. Last year Audi celebrated overall victory in Belgium and a GT3 one-two-three class finish in the Eifel. The Audi R8 LMS ultra should also be at the sharp end of the field again this year.

Audi R8 LMS Cup

One-make cup in China

In the future Audi will also be permanently represented in motor sport in the largest product market: from 2012 onwards the Audi R8 LMS Cup, as exclusive brand race series, will underline the companys leading role in the premium segment. As a result, Audi sets a milestone in Chinas embryonic motorsport tradition: it is the first onemake cup worldwide for the Audi R8 LMS. Starting in the second quarter of 2012, the powerful 419kW (570 hp) R8 LMS GT3 race car will compete at five race events, which visit the internationally renowned Shanghai and Zhuhai circuits. The plan is to field 16 examples of Audis customer racing model in the one-make cup. They comply with the GT3 version and are equipped with the new Audi PS1 safety seat as standard. The Audi R8 LMS Cup establishes our motor sport activities in China on a permanent basis, explains Rene Koneberg, Head of Audi Sport customer racing China. Audi was a pioneer in the premium car market in China. Now we aim to give motorsport in this country a similar impulse. Audi Sport customer racing China will organize the onemake cup. This new structure enjoyed an impressive premiere: at the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) finale at Zhuhai the race team celebrated a one-two with

Technology transfer and efficiency

Audi customers have benefited for years from motor sport

Motor sport has immense importance for Audi and this for 30 years. Motor sport is always undertaken with regard to the end user the Audi customer. Technologies with a direct relevance to production have the greatest chance of being implemented. Example 1: ultra lightweight technology. Ultra lightweight design and production helps to reduce fuel consumption. Aluminum suspension components were tested by Audi in rallying in the 1980s, today they are mass produced. The Audi Space Frame (ASF) sets standards in automobile manufacture for almost 20 years. The production line Audi R8 also has such an aluminum chassis. The basic structure of the Audi R8 LMS race version originates from the same production cycle and is to 90 per cent identical with the production model. This is why motor sport supplies valuable findings. The same can be said for new materials. Motor sport is dominated today by carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) or carbon fiber for short. It is rapidly finding its way into mass production. The Audi R8 Spyders soft top box and side panels are made from this material. The front fenders on the Audi RS3 Sportback are manufactured from CFRP. Example 2: Light technology. It is an important factor in active safety. The Audi A8 was the worlds first car to roll off the production line with LED daytime driving lights. An increasing number of Audi models are fitted with full LED equipment as an option, as does the new A6. Audi also pushes the new LED headlight technology in motor sport. In 2006 the Audi R10 TDI was the first race car with LED daytime driving lights. The Audi R15 TDI from 2010 was equipped with a combination of Xenon headlights and LEDs. The Audi R18 TDI was the first Le Mans sports car with full

LED headlights. Combined with sophisticated reflector-lens modules, eight high-power light emitting diodes per side provide unique illumination. Example 3: Drivetrain technology. Downsizing is the order of the day for ever more efficient engines. What establishes itself in mass production is also used successfully in motor sport. To this end, the Audi R18 TDI won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2011 with a displacement of 3.7 liters, while its predecessor had a displacement of 5.5 liters. The exhaust

manifolds of the V6 Le Mans engine run within the cylinder V. At the IAA three months after winning the race Audi unveiled the new 4.0 liter TFSI engine for the S6, S7 and S8 models. They are also equipped with the exhaust concept hot side inside. The two areas were already extremely closely linked in the past: from the bedplate design of the V12 TDI via injection technology to turbocharger design production and race car development benefit from one another.

Customer support

Worldwide in action
Audi Sport customer racing faces a big challenge in 2012: increasing demand worldwide for the customer racing race car from Neckarsulm requires specific development in the structural, personnel and organizational areas and for events at which support is provided. Last year quattro GmbH assumed responsibility for the technical development, marketing and distribution and support of the customer and importer teams.

The Audi customers can rely on direct and sustained support

Different customer teams swapped to Audi from rival manufacturers, explains Werner Frowein proudly. Many car owners signaled to us that the Audi support sets new benchmarks. In order to address the growing demands and keep pace with the ever increasing number of race cars in competition in the future, we are even more committed than ever in 2012. After more than 40 examples of the Audi R8 LMS were handed over to customers around the world by the end of

2011, further key markets are added this year: with the Audi R8 GRAND-AM a customer racing car is available for the North American market for the first time. The goal in the USA is for customer teams to field four cars permanently during the first year. In China a dedicated onemake cup is held for the Audi R8 LMS for the first time ever. As many as 16 cars compete against one another here. The newly developed Audi R8 LMS ultra competes as successor to the R8 LMS in the GT3 championships worldwide.

Customer support

quattro GmbH commissioned a new service truck for the events it supports

Audi boosts its permanent presence globally in the after sales field with four bases on three continents. As last year, Nova Engineering undertakes maintenance and service work on the customer racing race cars in Japan. This function is assumed by the Melbourne Performance Center in Australia. Audi Sport customer racing China is responsible for the Chinese market. Audi Sport customer racing North America is assigned the role as service partner in the USA. While parts supply for these oversea markets benefit to a great extent from the Audi groups global logistics, quattro GmbH is also present in the paddock at selected race tracks in Europe. A new, dedicated service trailer made its premiere in 2011. It is equipped with every modern facility for technology, parts supply and communication with the

customers. In the prvious season Audi Sport customer racing service trucks made more than 30 appearances at race events in Great Britain, France and Germany and in the FIA European Championship. quattro GmbH has also further reinforced its personnel levels. While the Sales and Marketing department was established in 2011, a greater number of customer racing support personnel are available for inquiries in 2012. In the meantime, on race weekends, the contacts in Germany support events in Australia, China, Japan and Malaysia and also various European championships. The step between 2011 and 2012 is again very big, knows Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing at

personnel still further for the

quattro GmbH. We expect that our business in Asia and North America will develop significantly. And in the existing markets there is a healthy demand for the new Audi R8 LMSultra. In addition to the personnel increase a structural innovation takes into account the flourishing motorsport activities. To this end, a position as Head of Customer Management is established for the first time in 2012. As a consequence we have created the foundations to establish ourselves in a leading position as attractive supplier in worldwide GT3 racing, emphasizes Werner Frowein.

Audi race experience

Even more thrills with the Audi R8 LMS ultra

From 2012 onwards the Audi race experience arouses even greater enthusiasm: customers race with the brand new Audi R8 LMS ultra in the new season. The Audi race experience has raised eyebrows for two years now. From initial license training and incentive events it has developed a systematic program for the brands more ambitious motor sport enthusiasts. As pioneer, Audi has developed a racing program for self-exploration: customers can participate in motor sport competitions personally with Audi. The entire package was accepted so well that the Audi race experience is now focused on two different areas incentives and customer motorsport. The incentives allow customers to familiarize themselves with both the Audi R8 LMS and Audi R8 V10 in different programs. The license trainings for instance allow participants to gain their racing license. The experience Audi R8 LMS allows between 30 and 60 minutes of driving time in the GT3 race car during predetermined appointments at the Gro Dlln or Lausitzring circuits. Subsequent individual training sessions enable customers to define an exclusive, bespoke program with the Audi R8 LMS. The customer motor sport sector crowns the program: customers are honed at Gro Dlln for their forthcoming races. Things then move up a gear on the worlds most challenging track: customers experience the famous

Nordschleife at several VLN endurance races or during the 24 hours Nrburgring (1920 May 2012). In 2011 all the seats for the 24-hour race were sold out very early. The VLN races also enjoyed great demand, says Josef Sepp Haider happily. The former rally driver takes the position of race team Sporting Director in 2012. As longstanding Audi driving experience instructor and having been involved with the Audi race experience form the word go the Austrian combines two special skills: he knows the Audi R8 LMS from his own experience and can assess clients wishes the best. From the very beginning he has worked as trainer to prepare customers for the races. The 58-year old professional still proves his great ability today while posting fast lap times with ease during occasional races in the R8 LMS.

The participants will again race alongside professional racing drivers on the Nordschleife in 2012. Last year international professionals like Craig Lowndes, Warren Luff, Darryl OYoung or former Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong were part of the team. This year the plan is that Florian Gruber, former DTM driver Frank Schmickler and three-time Le Mans winner Marco Werner will once again pass on their valuable experiences gained in a racing environment to the customers. New benchmark for success

In 2012, the Audi R8 LMS ultra competes as successor to the successful R8 LMS GT3 sportscar. The quattro GmbH engineers were faced with the challenging task of further improving a proven winner. The teams gave us valuable input, says Werner Frowein. We feel very close to our customers and analyzed the wishes which in turn helped the development of many details on the R8 LMS. On the new R8 LMS ultra all performance related measures are logically implemented to ensure that we can offer a globally competitive and attractive race car. Romolo Liebchen set several key priorities together with his development team. New doors manufactured from carbon fiber reinforced plastic help, together with high-energy absorbing crash foam, not only to reduce weight, but also to increase passive safety. The newly developed PS1 safety seat from Audi also contributes to this and is now also included as standard equipment, which easily exceeds the safety requirements stipulated by the regulations. A reworked gearbox further increases reserves over long distances. A new exhaust system with race catalytic converters improves the engine characteristics. The mid mounted V10 engine now has even more torque available at lower revs. Subject to the regulations the 5.2 liter power plant produces up to 419 kW (570 hp). Based on its

In addition to a larger engine oil cooler and gearbox oil cooler, there is also a hydraulic steering fluid cooler, which was previously located in the nose, now mounted in the center of the car. The sideblades, such a distinctive Audi R8 feature, allow larger

air ducts for the cooling system and improve the thermal characteristics of the new R8 LMS ultra. At the same time the air flow to the water cooler at the front of the car was improved. The cockpit ventilation was also further optimized. On the suspension side the Audi R8 LMS ultra was developed in several areas. On the front axle twelve inch wheels are now used instead of eleven. Development

partner Michelin supplies wider front tires in 30-65/18 format from 2012. Optimized brake cooling on the front axle improves durability of the brake system. As replacement for the anti-vibration rubber mounts used up to now, the wishbones are now mounted on the chassis with spherical bearings. Lighter, bump and rebound adjustable gas pressure dampers with optimized damping characteristics from Bilstein conclude the suspension package. Aerodynamic improvements round off the innovations for 2012. The wider front hood is available, insofar as the homologation rules allow this in the respective race series, with optional air outlets (louvers) over the front wheels.

The new rear wing is wider and is fitted with larger end plates. Work in the Audi wind tunnel enabled the wing to be mounted in an even more efficient position this generating maximum downforce while maintaining minimum drag. The improved air flow and increased contact surface area increase the downforce on the rear axle. A new front splitter with optimized diffusion guarantees a perfect aerodynamic balance. From 2012 all new cars are equipped with above mentioned evolution kit. For existing cars, quattro GmbH offers a conversion to the 2012 evolution version. The Audi R8 LMS ultra costs 329,000 Euro net.

Audi R8 GRAND-AM

Ready for North America

Ready for the North American market: the next customer racing race car from Audi Sport is fully developed and the first customer cars were delivered in January. Basis for the new Audi R8 GRAND-AM is the successful Audi R8 LMS with 118 wins and 13 championship titles to its name. Using this GT3 race car as base quattro GmbH developed a car for the Grand Touring class in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series in the USA. The Audi R8 GRAND-AM differs significantly to its GT3 sister model and has a completely new basic set-up. For example the downforce is reduced drastically. Approximately 70 to 80 per cent of the grip generated by the aerodynamics is lost because the GRAND-AM regulations stipulate different bodywork components. As a result, the new front splitter can only extend 38 millimeters beyond the nose contour. The front underfloor must be flat. The standard rear wing is only 152 centimeters wide and, as a result, 260 millimeters narrower than that of the R8 LMS. Because the aerodynamic loads are less, different damper characteristics and softer front springs are required, explains Armin Plietsch, Head of Technology customer racing at quattro GmbH. Furthermore, the regulations

The optimized Audi R8 LMS ultra cooling package is also used in the

specify a static ride height of 65 millimeters this is about ten millimeters more than the minimum in the FIA series. At the same time, the tires from standard supplier Continental play an important role. The GTR (for closed circuits) and GTO (for oval tracks) tire models significantly influence the suspension set-up. ABS and traction control, which are fitted as standard equipment in the Audi R8 LMS, had to be immobilized for the R8 GRAND-AM. The optimized cooling package that Audi had developed for the R8 LMS is also used in the R8 GRAND-AM. We have successfully tested every modification, sums up Romolo Liebchen. We developed a good and solid set-up for our customers with Frank Stippler in December 2011 and also gained valuable information during the endurance tests. The durability of consumable parts and their use in high ambient temperatures fulfill all requirements.

The GRAND-AM series poses new technical conditions. The Continental tires are designed specifically for the US race tracks

The classification of the Audi R8 GRAND-AM was only made in January. The balance of performance should create performance parity between the different cars in the GT class. Audi provided technicians representing the race series with an example of the 5.2 liter V10 FSI engine used in the Audi R8 GRAND-AM for a precise performance analysis. The definition of engine power and homologation weight results from this initial classification. For the benefit of individual support and coordinated logistics a maximum of four Audi GRAND-AM will be delivered for the 2012 season. Factory backed involvement for two ambitious programs

Dawning of a new era for the Audi factory motor sport program: a new age starts in 2012 in the DTM, while for LMP sportscars the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) is staged for the first time. As result, Audi tackles two particularly ambitious programs. After twelve years the DTM changes its look completely: the previous models make way for a new, far more economical vehicle concept. The spectacular appearance of the racing cars is maintained. However, the significantly higher number of standard parts for every manufacturer in the DTM helps to reduce costs by up to 40 per cent. The central component is an innovative carbon fiber monocoque with a steel cage. The design sets new benchmarks in the safety of racing touring cars. Audi started to develop the new A5 DTM for the 2012 season in May 2010. The Coup made its maiden outing in July 2011. The sporting goals in the new year remain the same: after five championship titles with the Audi A4 DTM (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011) the A5 DTM should continue this winning momentum. For the first time for many years a world championship is staged once again for sports cars: the 2012 WEC calendar consists of eight races and by including North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Asia covers

The new Audi A5 DTM is successor to the super successful A4 DTM which boasted five titles

A World Endurance Championship is staged in 2012. The 24 Hours of Le Mans, which Audi won for a tenth time last year, is also part of the WEC

important regions. The new FIA World Championship follows the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup as the highest profile international sportscar series. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the crown jewel in the calendar. After Audi won this endurance classic again for the tenth time last season, the focus of attention this year is once again victory in the worlds most important endurance race. Marcel Fssler/Andr Lotterer/Benot Trluyer took overall victory in 2011 with an Audi R18 TDI fitted with many pioneering developments. In addition to the ultra

lightweight technology and an innovative V6 TDI power plant the winning car also shone with full LED headlights. Le Mans remains a laboratory that is ideal for developing new technologies, emphasizes Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Of great importance for Audi is always the relevance for production cars. With the World Endurance Championship and DTM we pursue two particularly ambitious goals as factory team in 2012.
