OMALLEY, MARYLAND LEGISLATURE FOR DISASTER RELIEF BILL Annapolis, MD (May 8, 2013) -- When disaster strikes, AT&T* and other companies send resources and personnel from other states to affected areas on a temporary basis, expediting efforts to clean-up, restore and repair damaged buildings, equipment and property. Businesses and employees confronted an often slow and burdensome process of ensuring each employee is in compliance with state and federal regulatory, tax and licensing laws. Governor Martin OMalley last week signed HB1513, a measure that eliminates these obstacles for employees and gives businesses the ability to focus on responding quickly and efficiently to the needs of the state and its citizens during a declared state disaster or emergency. When disaster strikes, our primary focus is keeping our customers connected and to do so safely and efficiently, said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid Atlantic. This new law will remove barriers to our efficient deployment of personnel and other resources during an emergency, helping Marylanders get back on their feet faster. Schweder said Maryland is the second state in the nation to offer this kind of flexibility to employees and their companies. The new law recognizes the temporary nature of the work and the need for a rapid response to help Maryland recover from a disaster or emergency. The measure waives state and local taxes and other rules when non-Marylanders are deployed temporarily to assist with disaster recovery activities. Employees and employers will instead continue to be subject to taxes and other requirements in their home state during this period. I applaud Gov. OMalley, Sen. King and Del. Hixson for their leadership on this issue, Schweder said.
