Institutional background
TheHochschule fr Technik undWirtschaft desSaarlandes isaUniversityof AppliedSciences specialisinginEngineering,BusinessStudiesand more recently SocialSciences. TheAppliedLanguagesTeamonCampusAltSaarbrcken catersforthe teachingandlearningofforeignlanguagesin15BachelorandMaster programmes mainlyintheareaofEngineering. EngineeringgraduatesareexpectedtohaveEnglishlanguageskills enablingthemtooperateinaninternationalcontext. Asaresult,specialisedEnglish courseshavebeenintegratedasobligatory subjectsintothecurriculumofallourEngineeringcoursesofstudies. ThecoursesaremixturesofGeneralEnglish,BusinessEnglishand TechnicalEnglishrelatingtotherespectivecourseofstudiesandpreparing studentsforlevelB2.
Institutional background
WeexpectstudentstobeonlevelB1atthebeginningoftheirstudies,butalotofstudents tendtobebelowthatlevel.Weevenhavealargenumberofstudentswhohavenever learnedEnglishbefore. Thus,duetothiswiderangeoflearnerbiographies,ourlearnergroupsarevery heterogeneous. Todealwiththissituation,wehaveintroducedanumberofmeasures: Onlineplacementtests Fourweekprepcourses(Brckenkurse)inEnglishbeforethestartofthesemester Specialforeignlanguagelearningcounsellingservicetoenhancelearnerautonomy Tutorialsforstudentswhohaventreachedtheentrancelevelyet Useofcomputerassistedlanguagelearningprograms Inparticular,theintegrationofCALL/elearningintothecommunicativelanguagelearning processhasprovedtobehighlyadvantageous fortheselearnergroups. DespitetheabundanceofmultimediaBusinessEnglishprogramsavailableonthemarket, therehaveonlybeenafewprogramsmeetingthespecialneedsofengineeringstudents, whoneedtoacquireskillsinbothBusinessEnglishand TechnicalEnglish.
Methodological approach
TechnoPlusEnglisch isbasedona needsanalysis carriedoutincooperationwithaninternationally operatingengineeringcompany. Maintargetgroup:GermanlearnersofEnglishonLevelB1 workinginorpreparingforworkinthe engineeringfield Theprogramfollowsacommunicativeapproach enablinglearnerstotrainthefourskills reading, listening,speakingandwriting inanintegratedway.
