EXPERIENCE/RELATED WORK
Student Teaching at Hempstead High School, Loras College, Dubuque, IA January May 2013 Student teaching Spanish 8 weeks: Level 1 (primarily freshman) and Level 3 (primarily juniors). Planned cultural cooperative learning activities culminating student-led teaching on self-directed interest. Created an effective balance between individual, partner, and group work and provided a good variation in speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. Incorporated phrases of the day to expand applicable vocabulary for students and engaged students in critical thinking questions to stimulate more in-depth understanding of material and make connections between the languages. Organized listening and comprehension activities around pop music in Spanish to engage students to inspire them to continue their learning outside of the classroom. Student teaching math 8 weeks: Algebra 1 (freshman) and co-teach a data collection class (juniors/seniors). Study Abroad in Santiago de Compostela, Spain at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela January - May 2011 Attended 5 different classes taught in Spanish; tutored children in math in their native language. Taught and led physical and mental exercises for older adults struggling with dementia. Enhanced appreciation for other cultures and developed culturally competent perspectives while attending cultural events, learning in class, and spending time with my host family. Improved my abilities in the Spanish language as well as becoming intrigued by other languages.
