DOWRY SYSTEM IN INDIA

Excess of everything is bad. So

is the case in dowry system. If
parents don’t give anything to
girls on the occasion of
marriage – it shows there lack
of care. We know that even on
small occasions, parents love
to give something to their
children. Giving to children is a
source of pleasure for parents,
but when it is demanded, the problems start. Dowry,
which was a good practice in the past, has become an evil
practice today. There are huge demands. In some
communities, the rates are very high. It becomes very
difficult for the parents of girls to manage this amount.
Thus today it has become evil practice. There seems to be
only one solution – social boycott. This problem can be
solved by determination only. Let us hope that we have

voice against this problem.
WE ORGANISED A GROUP DISCUSSION ON THIS ISSUE, AS

IT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM IN INDIA. IT WAS A MIXED GROUP
CONSISTING OF EQUAL NUMBER OF BOYS AND GIRLS. THE
VIEWS ARE AS UNDER:
N: I believe that dowry is a tradition of India. It is a way in

which the parents give their property to their daughter. It
is the money of the woman. It is a right.
J: I think dowry should not be there. We are giving our

sister. It is not a sale. There is no need that the parents
should give something. It is the responsibility of the
husband to take care of the girl. There is no need of
dowry. There are many wrong practices due to this
system.
P: we read that girls are burned due to demands of dowry.

Dowry is rooted in Indian orthodox ideas. The solution of
dowry system is education. People must understand and
get education. We should express our ideas and be self
reliant. We should resist it.


N: every thing has two aspects. In dowry the parents give

basic utensils and other necessary items. These things help
the girls. It is not that husband has to take care of the girls.
We can also say that parents give some of their property
to the sons also. Thus there is nothing wrong in giving
dowry.
P: we see that there are many mal-practices due to dowry

system.
J: the problem is the mentality of the persons.

H: dowry is a social evil. It is a wrong pracitce. If a girl is
from a poor family, their parents will be in trouble. The
parents would not be able to give dowry and there will be
problems.
N: we are taking dowry as giving money. We should see it

in positive perspective. It is not like that we have to give
dowry. It is not like you have to give dowry.
J: giving gifts is different – giving a cash or similar things is

dowry.
H: boys want to take dowry, but girls don’t like the dowry
system.


P: Girl’s family faces the problems when boys demand.

There are always demands and there are problems.
J: the problem is with the mentality.
P: raising demand is not good.

S: in our country there are many social evils are there.
There are evils like child marriages etc. there are many
instances when the girl’s father is unable to fulfill the
demands of dowry. There are many laws which restrict
dowry system. But there are problems in implementation
of these laws. In rural areas the problem is acute. The
women in rural areas are comparatively less educated. We
must take steps. We should (girls) should not marry a
person who demands dowry.
J: in my opinion dowry is a big problem. We should have

ea comprehensive programme against this system. A
middle class family cannot fulfill the demand of the dowry
system.
N: I would like to share that dowry is not the problem –

mentality of people is the problem. The real problem is
lack of education – as only uneducated people are having
this problem. In educated families, there are no problems
due to dowry system. The main problem is greediness. If


people are greedy, this is one of the problems – thus real

problem e is not dowry, it is something else.
H: there are many cases pending in courts. Most of these

cases come from villages. There is widespread illiteracy in
villages. We can get rid of this problem by organizing
literacy programmes. We should also strengthen these
programmes. These programmes have been continuously
running campaigns for education and literacy.
P: we must remove dowry problem from our society. We

have one solution – that is education. With education, we
can analyze all the aspects of our society and solve the
problem.
VS: as far as dowry is concerned, we know that it is a

major problem; we should focus on solving this problem.
The government should take strict action against this
problem. If we are not able to solve this problem, it is our
mistake. We should form voluntary groups and these
groups should go to the villages and raise voice against
dowry system. For a normal person, there must be some
initiatives. I will try to remove this problem, as I will not
take dowry. I will not allow my friends to take dowry. I


have taken a step. If we all take steps, we will be able to

solve the problem.
S: if boys take steps not to take dowry, this problem is

solved.
