From the Principal

Great staffing news Im sure you will all be pleased to hear that the most competitive applicant for the permanent Deputy Principal position here at North was Mrs Belinda Baldey. Congratulations Belinda, you are an asset to our team with your in-depth curriculum knowledge, commitment to your job and caring nature with our students. Its great to have you staying with us. We have also welcomed back Mr Chris Stone as a supernumerary Deputy Principal for another term. Chris has great computer technology skills and is helping us to get all sorts of systems and processes in place. Chris is also our go to man when we need to release other teachers to participate in programs such as our John Curtin Year 7 Science collaboration. While weve got him with us, and considering hes a bit of a Maths guru, were getting him to teach some of the maths curriculum to our years 2/3 as well. Thinking about great team members I realised that I did not announce that our fabulous office staff, both Mrs Sue Morgan (registrar) and Mrs Kerrin Downs (school officer) have both been officially appointed to their positions for 2013 with the possibility of extension congratulations girls. NAPLAN The year 3/5/7 NAPLAN testing is completed for this year. Our students worked really hard and gave it their best effort congratulations all students. Well managed Mrs Baldey and all teachers for helping the children complete these tests in a stress free environment. Helpers needed at a number of events - please read carefully and volunteer where you can Saturday 25th May: The Football club is hosting a community day and they kindly allow our P&C to run the coffee and cake stall this activity raised us a significant amount of money last year. Please donate cakes, slices etc for sale. Helpers are also needed to man the stall between 9am and 11.30 and 11.30 and 2. Please complete the note sent home yesterday if you can help (copies available in the office). Sunday 2nd June: The Fremantle Foundation has organised an adventure race through Fremantle and offered our P&C the opportunity to set up a breakfast / coffee / drinks stall on for the morning. Again all profits from the stall come to the school. Can you help? Once again we need volunteers to man the stall. If you can donate an hour or two of you time, please complete the note sent home yesterday or drop in at the office to let us know.

Room 1 - Lisa Miller

This term we are learning about the people who help us in the community. We have made a shop in our classroom and are having fun serving our friends. Last week we enjoyed our first Zumba lesson. We are looking forward to doing it again next week.

Room 2 - Liz Smith

Our topic this term is people who help us focussing on workers within our own community. Im hoping to arrange for some incursions and excursions for the children and I will keep you updated. A huge thank you to the P&C for organising the Sundowner, it was another fun and successful event.

Room 3 - Bev Lane

We have been very busy since returning from holidays. Weve Zumba-ed and Bluearthed, practised counting backwards and forwards (you could ask your child to count to 20 and back and see how they go), learnt about vowels with our lovely student teacher, Miss L. and of course, celebrated Mothers Day. This week we wrote stories about accidents that weve had and this is Rubys piece.

Room 4 - Rochelle Reeves

Welcome back to Term 2. Room 4 has made a wonderful start to the term. We have been busy with NAPLAN preparation and testing for the year 3s. We had a little taste of Zumba in Week 1 and we are really looking forward to the rest of the term. Students have been bringing in exciting and informative newspaper articles and presenting them for their news, one even contained some of our teachers and students. There are a lot of exciting things planned for this term one of which is our assembly item.

Room 6 - Chris John

Term 2 was always going to be a bit different with NAPLAN in the second week of a nine-week term. However, to their credit, the students of Room 5 have hit the ground running after their holidays, jumping into all activities both inside and outside the class, especially Zumba (pictured) where the whole class (but mainly the boys) were more than happy to wear everything they could get their hands on; hats, skirts, feather boas, the lot. Room 5s term focus will be The News which will require students to read, analyse and create both print and film news stories from around the world. It may be an idea for parents to start reading/watching the worlds headlines and stories at home with your child so they have a better understanding of the concept.

Room 7 - Monica Parkes/Brent Snook

Room 7 have had a great start to Term 2! The year 7s have sat NAPLAN this week and have felt positive about the testing. This term in Science we will be continuing with our Biological Sciences topic and in Society and Environment we will still be focussing on History with particular emphasis on immigration to Australia in the 20th century. We have identified what we think we know about immigration and what we would like to explore further, with most students wanting to learn more about why people decide to immigrate. Our class read aloud for the term is The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do which has already provided us with some laughs! This week we begin Four Roles of the Reader. The novels that we will be reading are Maos Last Dancer by Li Cunxin and Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman, both of which will complement our History topic. We are looking forward to beginning this in Literacy.

The Semi-Finalists of the popular Mental Maths game Shoot-out in the year 6/7 class.

Art - Margie Campbell

On return form the holiday break students were asked to design a poster that would be suitable for a shop window. It had to use bold pictures, large blocks of colour and students were asked to experiment with blending oil pastels to create depth in their pictures. Many of the students experimented with the way they applied the oil pastels to create a sense of movement in their designs. The students were asked to summerise the most memorable experience of their holiday in three words. As the posters are completed they will be on display in the art room dividing wall, please feel free to pop in and have a look. Some of the older students have been experimenting with printing with more than one colour, congratulations to Romany who has created these lovely greet-
