1. COURSE OBJECTIVE
This hybrid online course is designed to help students develop a high level of speaking and
listening fluency in order to elevate their Korean language proficiency to an Advanced-Mid- or
High-level. It should also improve their knowledge of Korean culture and society by exposing
students to authentic Korean film rich with cultural and sociopolitical information. With a focus
on speaking and listening fluency, this course will assist students in transferring their knowledge
of Korean culture and society into producing language rich with high fluency techniques.
2. COURSE CONTENT
This course is composed of in-class and online activities. In-class activities include student
presentations, group discussions (or debates) and other activities designed to promote the
objective of speaking and listening fluency. Online activities include watching movies and
completing speaking and listening exercises.
3. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe and express opinions and ideas in real time at a high fluency.
2. Comprehend salient aspects of Korean culture and society presented via movies.
3. Develop cross-cultural insights by comparing the use of linguistic and non-linguistic
features, captured in Korean movies, with their own heritage.
4. Continue learning about Korea through exposure to diverse media outside classroom.

Attendance: The university catalog states that "Regular attendance at class and laboratory
sessions is expected for all courses in which a student enrolls. Unavoidable absences should be
explained to the instructor." Since this is a hybrid online course and students only meet 2~3
times per week throughout the six-week summer session and absence will affect your letter grade.
Multiple tardiness and early leaves will add up to absence (usually, 3 tardiness will equal one
absence). Tardiness or early leaves of more than 20 minutes will be counted as an absence.
Visitors to the Classroom
There might be some classroom visitors throughout the summer sessions. The purpose of the
visit may include research, professional development, and observation/evaluation. Class
presentations/discussions may be video recorded for assessment purpose with students
permission.
In-class activity: Upon the completion of the assigned activity, students will be given a grade on
a scale from 0 to 4, 4 being the highest. Non-proactive participation in activity may result in
point deductions. During the in-class activity time, the following rules should be observed:

No English should be spoken unless the instructor permits.

Most of the activity will be pair work. Partners for the pair work will be arranged by the
instructor.
Activities in this course are aimed for fluency development. Students should try to speak and
comprehend faster, hesitate less, and to use larger planned chunks than they do in their
normal use of language in doing the activities.
Assigned activity grades will be determined with emphasis on successful completion.
Accuracy is of secondary importance (though students should not neglect it).
All the activities will be completed under an external push from your instructor or peers to
elevate your language fluency, especially though the use of time pressure.
Students should carry a device to measure time (e.g. stopwatch).
Since the purpose is to engender an elevated ability to spontaneously comprehend and speak,
detailed instructions will be provided in class so that you may not prepare for such activities
before class.
Classes will be video recorded so we may more effectively grade students.

Presentation: A designated pair will watch assigned movies that have been prepared online in
advance and then prepare a 15-minute presentation including a storyline of the movie, character
description, brief explanation of the social and historical context, and a short lecture on the topic
to debate the next day. Written scripts should not be read from. Visual aids (e.g. PowerPoint)

must be used. Both presenters should devote the same amount of time and effort into the
presentation and will be separately graded.
Since the content of the presentations is important preparation for the next days debate and
activities, presenters are responsible for covering important features of the movie and properly
informing audiences.
Presenters must meet with the Online teacher (Na Young Kim) before their presentation date to
do an online rehearsal session and show their finalized presentation. Attendance and tardiness
policies apply to online sessions.
Debate: Aforementioned designated pairs for the presentation lead a 50-minute debate. Consider
that all students should speak for themselves in order to receive in-class activity points. The
debate teams will be fixed through the entire course except in the case of emergencies. Students
must rearrange the classroom seats to debate format seating before the class. The entire process
will be video/audio recorded. Two presenters also assume two roles: (moderator) and
(keeper). They dont participate in the debate but have to prepare multiple issues related
to the topic for an active debate.
: Open the debate with a brief explanation about the topic. Then lead the debate. Monitor the
debate and keep the discussion relevant to the topic. Ensure that all speakers have a fair chance to
speak. Give a brief summary after each turn if clarification is needed. Close the debate with a brief
recap of all that was discussed.
: Monitor and record the number of turns each student takes and let the moderator know of any
imbalances in student contribution during the debate. Assess each students performance and give
them a grade ranging from A+ to F and provide them with a count of quality turns taken and a short,
descriptive evaluation of their performance. You must then show your evaluation to the respective
student to see if your evaluation matched with their self-perceived performance. Have the student sign
and approve it. If the student disagrees with your assessment, then the instructor will review the
recording and make the final decision. Submit your evaluation to the instructor to confirm the grades
by the next in-class day. In all cases, the final grade will be decided by the instructor. The form will be
provided to you.

Online Assignments: Throughout the semester, students are required to check the daily schedule
and complete the online assignments on time. There are two types of online assignments:
watching the assigned movie and doing follow-up exercises. There will be a total of six movies
viewable online; students are responsible for watching them according to the schedule. If you are
a presenter for the upcoming movie, you should watch it far in advance of the listed assignment
date. Online class days follow in-class days. There will be exercises ready to complete online.
For online exercises, you will be given only one chance to make a recording, so prepare before
actually recording.
