BARRE Barre Community Baseball and
Softball has enthusiastically begun playing
Minor League baseball games at the new Bond
Field on Upper Prospect Street
The facility, which will add amenities including
dugouts, bleachers and a press box in the future,
already rates as a great place to play baseball
This project has been in the works for a few
years, Bond Auto Parts Marketing VP Mark
Mast said. It stems from the loss of two base-
ball fields a few years ago adjacent to our South
Barre store. My wifes grandfather, Earl Bond,
founder of the company, had the fields built
many years ago. The state ended up exercising a
right of way and built a new road, thus the loss
of the fields. My father-in-law Bill Bond and I
had been searching for a way to replace them.
We were trying to figure out a way to put in
a level field with no water problems, but the roll-
ing contour of the land was a problem, Bill
Bond said. When Pike Industries won a con-
tract to expand a runway at the airport as part of
the stimulus package in 2010, they needed a
place to truck off the fill and we worked out a
deal. They must have brought over 30,000
square yards in here.

the best baseball fields in all of Vermont.
Brent Tewksbury, a Barre native and the co-
owner of Lafayette Highway Specialties, the
company that installed the fencing and backstop,
agreed with Spaulding. It was part of the dis-
cussion from the start that building a field that
would serve the community for many years was
the goal, he said. Its nice to stand up there and
enjoy the beauty of central Vermont with Spruce
Peak in the background.
The dirt portion of the infield consists of
Beam Clay, a registered trademark product of
the Beam Clay Company of Great Meadows,
NJ, which provides surface supplies to Major
League Baseball, over 150 Minor League teams
and more than 700 colleges
The Bond Field layout also includes a youth
football field
The facility received support from many local
businesses, including Lennys Shoe and Apparel,
Myles Supply, Northeast Materials, Rock of
Ages, Tim Stone Trucking, Chase and Chase
Surveyors and Fournier Landscaping of North
Ferrisburgh in addition to Pike Industries
Lennys has been a long time supporter of
local athletics, co-owner Mark McCarthy said.
Our collaboration with Bond Auto and the cre-
ation of the wonderful youth sports facility
adjacent to their Barre Town warehouse facility

Vermont youth baseball and that dream appears
well on its way to becoming a reality

Over 400 kids are enrolled in the Barre
Baseball and Softball program and quality fields
to play on are at a premium. Spaulding High
School is awaiting the end of a current lease
arrangement with the organization so as to begin
refiguring the schools athletic fields
The Rotary Park field is slated for a makeover
this summer including new dugouts courtesy of
Boy Scout Troop 714.
Monsignor Reid C. Mayo blessed the Bond
Field on opening day, May 4 before a game
between the Athletics and the Astros. In the near
term, Bond Field will be the site of Minor
League games. The Minor League is an interme-
diary division for eight and nine year-olds. It
was a beautiful day the weather was great,
Kevin Spaulding noted
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony with a
possible surprise or two is anticipated in a few
weeks.

Barres own Lennys Shoe and Apparel has teamed up with
Thunder Road to renew the Lennys Hot Shoe Challenge Award,
which awards extra money to racers for feature victories at the
Nations Site of Excitement.
The Hot Shoe Challenge Award will give a cash bonus of $150
to a Late Model driver who wins their first race of the season, as
well as $100 for Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen and $50 for the Allen
Lumber Street Stocks. For the drivers second win, they will
receive half the amount of their first. Checks and an embroidered
Lennys hat are given during the pre-race ceremonies of the next
event.
Lennys Shoe and Apparel is pleased to again be partnering
with the ACT Tour and Thunder Road in sponsoring the Lennys
Shoe and Apparel Hot Shoe Challenge Award, said Mark
McCarthy, Vice President of Lennys Shoe and Apparel. Lennys
recognizes the impact the ACT Tour and Thunder Road have on
the stock car racing landscape here in central Vermont, and
throughout the Northeast, and is proud to be associated with such
a great organization, he finished.
Lennys also awards a year-end bonus to the driver in each divi-
sion with the most wins. In the Late Models the bonus is $500, in
the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen it is $250, and in the Allen

The next event at the Nations Site of Excitement will be on

Classic where the Thunder Road Late Models will be featured in
a 100-lap race. It will also serve as the first race of the Vermont
State Late Model Championship Series, and will include a special
50-lap feature for the Devils Bowl Dirt Modifieds as well as
regular point counting events for the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen
and Allen Lumber Street Stocks.
The 51st Annual Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic at
Barres Thunder Road on Sunday, May 26 will be the kickoff
event in the search for the next King of the Road in the premiere
Late Model stock car division.
Barres own Nick Sweet will look to defend his Late Model title
and win his third championship in five years in Thunder Roads
top-flight division.
Its a fresh start for us, and we know weve got to bring our A
game to this race and every one after it, said Sweet, who earned
four victories in last years title chase. My team and I cant wait
to get started, he added.
The Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic will also serve as the
first event of the Vermont State Championship Series, which will
run two events at Thunder Road, and two events at West Havens
half-mile Devils Bowl Speedway. Last years championship was
decided by one-point after a photo finish in the series finale.
We were so close to that championship last year, it was sort of
bittersweet. I was really happy with the way we ran, but I always
want more, said Miltons Brent Dragon, who won the series
finale but came up just shy of his first Vermont State Championship.
I just try to go out and win races. Well see where the points fall
this time around.
Also making a special appearance on Mekkelsen RV Memorial
Day weekend, joining Thunder Roads own Bond Auto Tiger
Sportsmen and Allen Lumber Street Stocks for a full card of rac-
ing action, will be the Devils Bowl Dirt Modifieds. The Modifieds
Gov. Peter Shumlin, attending a Drive Electric Vermont cele-
bration of electric vehicles in Vermont recently, announced that
the State Fleet program will launch a plug-in electric hybrid
vehicle to further Vermonts goals to reduce reliance on gasoline
and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The electric sedan - a
Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid - was plugged in at a new charging
station located near the State House on Governor Aiken Avenue.
Supporting electric-drive transportation in Vermont helps our
environment by reducing greenhouse gases, increases our smart
transportation choices, and provides an important boost to the
states economy by saving money on gas, keeping dollars that
would have been spent on imported oil right here in Vermont, the

Plug-in Electric Vehicle Added to State Fleet
Governor said.
This newly installed electric charging station is capable of
charging two electric plug-in vehicles simultaneously. While one
space will be reserved for the Fleet vehicle, the other space is
available for public use. By making public charging stations con-
venient for residents and using plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in
the State Fleet, Vermont continues to lead the way and expand its
commitment to the environment while reducing the cost of operat-
ing state vehicles. Electric vehicles can charge at any conven-
tional electric outlet, but public charging stations enable a quick
and convenient way to recharge during the day.
According to Drive Electric Vermont, there are already nearly
250 electric vehicles registered in the state, which represents an
almost threefold increase since Vermont first started keeping track

Plug-in Electric Vehicle continued
operational in Vermont, with seven more slated to come online in
the next six months, and many more in the planning stages.
Vermonters can be really proud of the leadership Governor
Shumlin and his partners in the Legislature are showing on elec-
tric vehicles, said Karen Glitman of the Vermont Energy
Investment Corporation, lead partner in the Drive Electric
Vermont effort. Homes and businesses in our state could save
hundreds of millions of dollars annually through the reduced cost,
and more efficient use, of energy for powering their travel.
The new electric plug-in hybrid sedan will be available in
Montpelier for State business travel through the Department of
Buildings & General Services Fleet Management Services (FMS)
motor pool program. FMS will assign the vehicle to employees
based on their travel destination in order to best utilize the vehi-
cles electric range capabilities while concurrently limiting its
fuel consumption.
This pilot vehicle investment will allow the State Fleet to col-
lect real-time data of vehicle life-cycle cost, fuel consumption,
tailpipe emission reductions and overall vehicle performance.
This is the first step to incorporating electric vehicle and charging
infrastructure into the State Fleet in an effort to create a sustain-
able transportation system by reducing Vermonts reliance on
imported petroleum and by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Drive Electric Vermont is a project of the Vermont Energy
Investment Corporation in partnership with the State of Vermont,

Stock car racing lost ones of its greatest drivers and namesakes
last Thursday when short track legends Dick Trickle whose larger
than life personality and fun-just plain fun attitude died Thursday
of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He
was 71. According to the (Milwaukee) Journal-Sentinel, Trickle
won more than 1,000 short-track races throughout the country dur-
ing his prime. He was a seven-time winner in the regional ARTGO
Challenge Series in the late 1970s and mid `80s. Trickle also cap-
tured the ASA AC-Delco Challenge Series in back-to-back years
in 1984-85 earning his reputation on the countries short tracks and
bull-rings before turning to Cup racing. People everywhere knew
his name, said former NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine,. Thats
why they used his likeness in that movie `Days of Thunder. He
was such a character. The core character in that popular niche
racing movie, played by Tom Cruise, was named Cole Trickle.
Trickle earned his reputation as a successful short track driver
before joining the Sprint Cup Series and earning rookie of the year
in 1989 at age 48. He competed in 303 Cup races. While he never
won a Sprint Cup event and won only two Busch Series races,
Trickle earned cult status. Former ESPN anchors Keith Olbermann
and Dan Patrick was obsessed with Trickles name and would
regularly mention where Trickle was running and finished in every
race. I first meant Dick at a race at Cayuga Speedway in Cayuga
Ont. In the early 80s and was immediately taken in by the com-
petitor and the character. Being my first trip to the speedway and
also one of my first trips as a race vagabond chasing big dollar
events away from my home tracks at Catamount Stadium and
Thunder Road I was intrigued by a short-track legend making the
effort and taking time away from his own determinations to help
me get comfortable and faster. Many years later during the forma-
tion of the Stock Car Connection a same-sex union, so to say, of
the American Canadian Tour, ASA and the All Pro Series I had the
fortune to sit on a planning panel with Trickle and to witness his
love of the sport, so deep in fact that he made it his everyday way
of life. During that short-lived Stock Car Connection era I was
again in awe of the man who utilized our race shop in Waterbury,
VT as a home base for a couple of weeks. I spent many an hour
over hot coffee or a cold beer listening to the unassuming driver
relate his race experiences never once realizing that having raced
anywhere and everywhere, crossing paths with the top drivers of
NASCAR when they made occasional runs at backwater short
tracks as well as the local short tracks heroes that he instantly
earned their respect. Asked in a 2011 SPEED interview how he
wanted to be remembered, Trickle said, I dont know I just
want to be who I am and satisfied that I had a great career. Im
happy with it. I think I made a lot of friends. Im very glad of the
people I had working for me and helping me, my fans, and my
family. I was real lucky to be able to do that. Trickle was a short-
track legend who rose to folk hero status. Personally I was real
lucky to have shared a few moments with one of this countrys
greatest racing legendsGod Speed my Friend, you will
never be forgotten.
At the last ACT event at Devils Bowl Speedway, Eight-time
American Canadian Tour Stock Car Champion Brian Hoar fin-
ished second by .028 of a second margin the closest margin of
victory or defeat in ACT history. The ACT 100 at Airborne
Speedway on Saturday night was decided again by a photo-finish
and by the exact same margin, but this time it was all Hoar, earn-
ing the victory with an epic come from behind last lap pass of ACT
Point Leader Jimmy Hebert, leaving rival Wayne Helliwell, Jr.,
who bested Hoar at the Bowl to round out the podium in third.
Ray Parent and Brent dragon rounded out the top five. Hoar
couldnt contain his emotion in an passionate Victory Lane inter-
view. It feels (expletive) awesome! Hoar shouted in victory
lane. Im pumped. The whole time I was thinking Those damn
rookies, they are learning too quick! Im out of breath, and I was
every lap out there, he finished. Hebert also appeared breathless.
I have never driven so hard in my life, said Hebert after the race.
We rubbed all the way to that line. That was the most fun Ive
ever had.
The Brothers Busch won the first four segments of Saturday
nights Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but
Jimmie Johnson took the one that countedthe 10-lap dash to the
finishand continued to build his legacy, not to mention his bank
account. Speeding away from Hendrick Motorsports teammate
Kasey Kahne after a restart on Lap 81 of 90, Johnson won the
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series all-star exhibition race for a record
fourth time, beating charging Joey Logano to the stripe by 1.722
seconds. Kyle Busch, who won the second and third segments of
20-laps each, ran third, followed by Kahne and Kurt Busch. The
elder Busch brother won the first and fourth segments and was
first onto pit road before the final dash but exited fifth with a less-
than-stellar pit stop. Despite changes to his pit crew this week,
Johnsons over-the-wall gang performed an 11-second pit stop that
got him out of the pits on the front row, beside Kahne, for the final
restart. Ultimately, that made all the difference. With the victory,
Johnson broke a tie with teammate Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt
for most wins in the non-points race, won his second straight All-
Star Race and collected $1 million for his efforts. "To beat Jeff and
Earnhardt, two guys Ive looked up to my whole lifetwo mas-
sive icons of our sportthis means the world to me," said
Johnson, who started 18th after sliding through his pit box and
drawing a penalty for a loose lug nut during Fridays qualifying
session. "I really didnt think we had a shot at winning tonight,
starting (18th), but we had a great race car and worked our way
through there and got the job done. Over time, honestly, its just
dedication and drive from every member at Hendrick Motorsports,
every member on this No. 48 team. Were very proud of what
weve accomplished, but we know weve got to keep pushing
harder and pushing one another."

career in 107 starts. Brendan
Gaughan ran second, .468 sec-
onds behind Busch, with the
race decided in an eight-lap
green-flag run to the finish after
the eighth caution of the night.

best third, followed by series
leader Matt Crafton and Ty
Dillon. "It was an eternitythe
starts were spread over a year
and half," Busch said of his
seven-race winless streak. "It
certainly was frustrating last
year that (crew chief) Eric
(Phillips) and I werent able to
get to Victory Lane. We only ran
three starts, and in all of those
three starts, we were a really good truck and had a shot to win in
all three of those... The victory was the first as a crew chief for
Rudy FugleBusch now has 113 wins in NASCARs top three
series combinedGaughan scored his third straight top-five finish
and climbed three spots to fourth in points Crafton leads in the
series standings by 22 points over polesitter Jeb Burton, who fin-
ished 13th.
Victory Lane
Veteran stock car driver Chris Donnelly of Piermont, NH rim
rode to victory on Valley Floors night at Bear Ridge Speedway on
Saturday. Donnelly used the extreme outside lane to blast his way
to the front from his 14th starting position. Martin Mastic of
Bradford, VT grabbed his first career win in the 30-lap Wells
River Chevrolet Sportsman Coupe feature. Lebanon, NH resident
Jason Giguere took advantage of the last restart, taking the lead
and rolling to his second victory in the Limited Late Models
Tyler Rich battled back from a midrace blunder to earn the
Bond Auto Parts Sprint Cars of New England win in the 25-lap
Peanuts Auto event at Canaan Dirt Speedway on Friday night.
Also at Canaan, T.C. Forward took command of the field and an
early race lead in the Modified feature to easily claim his first win
of the season.
Garage Garble
Joe Gibbs Racing has won 14 NASCAR Nationwide Series
races with Kyle Busch (five) and former driver Joey Logano
(nine) behind the wheel since the start of the 2012 season. Even
more impressive is that one person has called the shots from atop
the pit box for all 14 victories crew chief Adam Stevens.
Ironically, just three seasons ago Stevens was the team engineer
for JGRs No. 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team. Joe Gibbs
Racings No. 54 entry currently holds a 20-point lead over the No.
7 of JR Motorsports in the NNS owners championship battle.
Next Lap
Thunder Road will host the first of four races for the 2013
Vermont State Late Model Championship and the 51st Mekkelsen
RV Memorial Day Classic 100 on Sunday. The event will feature
a full card of racing plus the Devils Bowl Modifieds. Nick Sweet
is the defending race champion.
Cup teams stay in their own beds for another weekend and
Sunday nights 54th Annual Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor
Speedway (FOX, 6:00 p.m.). Kasey Kahne is the defending race
champion in the years longest race. In his 300th NASCAR Sprint
Cup start, Kahne posted his first victory of the 2012 season, his
first since joining Hendrick Motorsports and the 13th of his career.
Kahne beat runner-up Denny Hamlin to the finish line by 4.295
seconds.
The NNS returns to the track Saturday, May 25, for the History
300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, marking the start of 21 con-
secutive weeks in which the series will compete. Kyle Larson
remains on top of the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings with
Alex Bowman and Nelson Piquet Jr. in second and third, respec-
tively.
Groveton NHs Riverside Speedway will open the 2013 racing
season on Saturday night with all divisions.
The Winged Warriors of the Sprint Cars of New England will
be on hand plus a full card of racing Saturday night at Bear Ridge
Speedway.
