When you discard it, there is an undo link at the top.

When that is gone, you can't recover them any more. When I am composing a long or important email, I use Google Docs, and then copy-paste it into Gmail.

MastedonLevel 2

I found out the hard way too. The Discard (bad choice of phrasiology on Google's part) button permanently deletes the message you are on. If you are observant, there is a pop-up box that says Do you want to "UNDO". But if you miss it as I did and navigate off the screen, it is gone forever. This has to be one of the dumbest things Google has ever designed (along with the new interface nobody wants to use). If you go to the Suggestions site (http://support.google.com/mail/bin/static.py?hl=en&page=suggestions.cs&bucket=16937&issue=189337&rd=1), under Helpful Additions you can click on "Discard drafts to trash". Maybe if enough do this, they will move on changing it. I am now going to create a new folder (label) called "My Drafts" and move all my drafts there. This was an expensive way to learn of this bad functionality in Gmail. Arrrg.

Till now there's no option to recover discarded mail, if we miss the Undo Link at the top. Somehow I was able to recover it by my iphone. I simply turned off my Wi-fi & Cellular Services and I was able to open the same mail on my phone, I copied it, turned on internet services and drafted a new mail with the copied data, sent it back to my Gmail ID... All done!! :)

There is another way! Just push the back button on the browser. It will take you back to your draft and the text will still be there even though you discarded it.

Fuzzy

Maybe. No guarantees.

Sometimes when I think the message I was typing mysteriously disappeared, I find it in my DRAFTS. Still not sure how it jumps over to there, but that's where I often find it. good luck with your issue...

ribeyesteakLevel 1

This is awful! How could they be so stupid?? Try hitting the back button from the gmail app, yeah right! Long, well thought out, time consuming message, GONE!

this has got to be the WORST behaved thing I've EVER seen on Google. Makes NO sense whatsoever on a service that give us Gigs and Gigs of storage. Crappy thing.

pretty sure I inadvertently deleted my draft without even hitting the "Discard" button. Thought I might have hit the wrong keys by accident but the forums say there is no keyboard shortcut for Discard. Didn't see any "Undo" button though might have missed it in my spasm of panic. Not the worst draft I might have lost, nor as bad as other people's experience posted above, but still highly annoying. I'm going to boycott Google Drive in protest until gmail changes this inexcusable feature.

Yes it should move a draft that has been deleted by the user (not through auto-save) to the trash!

the problem is, I was using the GMAIL apps on iPhone and discarded the draft for the changes I didn't want. There was no undo button anywhere and now it's gone forever

i got my very important draft(yes...even after discarding & being failed to undo the discard) from the gmail, when i accidently deleted the draft. here is what i did to get my important draft message back: i searched in the gmail search box with whole or part of the attachment(if exists) name or something that can uniquely identify ur draft message. just search that & GOTCHA......... i got it back...............

hello everyone please use the pre typed option below for ":Discard drafts to trash" if we all do it gmail will hopefully implement it References (1)

How many more victims for this bad " google trap" shall fall into ? On purpose I did click the discard tab because my email couldn't be sent although I'm very sure that the recipient's email address is 100% correct . I got the error message, over and over when attempting to send it. I never know why this could happen just at that time. Usually my email is sent smoothly from my draft . So I discard it with the notion it should be in the thrash whence it could be retraced . It was a long email and was gone . Google must overcome this shortcoming . Not all Gmail users are experts in this field.

dongsoo8Level 1

It also worked for me, I am sooo relieved!! It was an important email.. Thank you so much Vasudha!!

Did this on my PC, my phone had not yet sync'd so i was able to go back to the drafts in my phone and send it to myself.

Ugh. It's been 12 hours since I accidentally "discarded" an email draft (that was an hour in the making). I'm wondering within what time frame you turned off your wi-fi & cell service. I'm also wondering if I can try to disconnect the wi-fi and go to my netbook to see what is there. I don't have the internet on my cell.

15

kmvasudhaLevel 1

Hi, If you are not using internet on your cell, then you must not be having gmail configured on your cell. There is no way to get back your discarded draft mail in this case. -Best Regards Vasudha

Alison KaplanLevel 1

I just deleted (as opposed to discarded) a very important draft because the saved message comes up right next to the trash can. I thought I was clicking on the save, but I hit the discard. Yes, stupid mistake, but I was deep into my thoughts as I was drafting and thought I was clicking on save. Then, before I could comprehend what I had done - I thought I had just hid it behind another open window - it was gone as was the undo. Very very disappointing to find out the hard way that this means it is gone for good. But what is more disappointing is that this situation has been an ongoing issue for some time and has some sad stories associated with it. How can Gmail ignore this issue for so long? What is the next level of request that can be made? How can they spend more time figuring out how to make things look good, when much more critical issues in regards to functionality need attention.

Argh, this really sucks, I was typing stuff up in a draft all day on my phone and it just disappeared. Only thing I could think of is that somehow my phone discarded it cause its nowhere. It was addressed to my own account, so it didn't get sent. Its not in the trash, its not on the phone and its not my account online. I'd been saving as draft every few minutes but its still just gone. Lesson learned, don't use gmail for anything important.

Michele ChambersLevel 1

Tried this using Airplane Mode, but when I opened my GMail app, I couldn't use it, it kept giving me an error message due to being offline. So I tried to turn the internet back on and "sneak up" on the message before my draft box refreshed, but I wasn't fast enough. Darn, I tried... This REALLY sucks, ugh, what the hell was I thinking?!?!?!

thats what i have now -- CRAP

vandydonaldLevel 1

where did you find the discarded draft after you turned off the wifi and cellular services? thank you!

vandydonaldLevel 1

i accidentally deleted a gmail draft on my android phone. When i did it the internet service on my phone was off and i could see the deleted draft under [trash] label. I could not copy and paste under that label tho. But then out of no reason i turned the internet service on and it was gone from the trash label! i could have recovered it! what should i do now?!

19

pa3ckLevel 1

f..K! found it hard way as well!! One would expect that "discard" are meant for any changes done to the draft. Cancel won't do anything and if I do not want to "save" (because I know I didn't want to edit, just to have a look into a draft)... And now it is gone! And it is not even in the TRASH! How's that?!?
