Words for Living by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

it. Love is a verb. It always has been. As humans, we were created to give and receive love. Jesus made that clear. As I write this, we are in Corolla, NC celebrating our fourth anniversary at the Outer Banks. Megan's family has been coming here for many years and I have grown to love it here. With the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Currituck Sound to the west, it is a beautiful and peaceful place. I desperately needed this trip because the past six weeks have been very taxing and stressful. My father's heart surgery and subsequent illness combined with the predictable challenges of the annual stewardship campaign to support the ministries of Woodmont all on top of what naturally comes along with being in the trenches raising an almost three year old and fifteen month old have taken a toll on me. Sometimes you don't realize how tired you are until you get away. As human beings, we need time away from the stresses of life. Life has a tendency to wear us out and run us ragged and if we don't take the time to rest and recharge, that can be a problem. Life is not easy for anybody, and as a minister I am keenly aware of that fact. Life is busy, stressful, competitive, expensive, demanding, exhausting, and it doesn't slow down unless we slow it down. Summer is around the corner so let that be a reminder for all of us to take the time for rest, relaxation, and renewal. Summer brings a much slower pace and for many of us, that is a good thing. Whenever I do get away, I have the chance to think and reflect. I have been married to Megan now for four years. I love her more every day. We have been blessed with two precious children, Montgomery and Clayton - they are our world and we love them more than words can express. We also understand the importance of taking time for each other in addition to being parents. I have always said that the three most important things in life are faith, family, and friends. I still believe this with all my heart. Relationships with people are funny things. It is our greatest source of joy and our greatest source of frustration. Jesus told us to love God and to love our neighbors. The latter is often very challenging. I've been thinking about some important phrases that all of us should learn to say more often. I LOVE YOU - Love is a funny word. It's thrown around an awful lot in many different contexts. Sometimes we say we love others but we don't act like it. Other times we assume others know we love them but we never say
The Spire is published weekly by:

I'M SORRY - Sometimes we hurt people intentionally or unintentionally and we need to tell them I'm sorry. Often times, our egos and pride get in the way. I often use jokes and funny stories to begin sermons. I think humor is important in the church but not everybody agrees on the appropriate kind of humor. When we hurt or offend people, we should be willing to say I'm sorry and really mean it. WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? A lot of times we ask people what we can do for them and secretly we are hoping they will say "nothing." But when we ask somebody that question, we should be willing to help right then and there. PLEASE FORGIVE ME - Forgiveness is absolutely essential for human beings to coexist. We must be willing to ask for it and grant it. Those who are unwilling to forgive carry around an unnecessary burden. Forgiveness must be an intentional choice. Again Jesus made this clear. PLEASE HELP ME- Life is hard and we cannot do it all on our own. Asking for help is a sign of strength and not weakness. Help is always available but so many of us are unwilling to ask. We do not have to shoulder the challenges of life alone. We have each other. These are words that we all must be willing to say and mean. Life is stressful and challenging for everybody. Every person has "invisible baggage" that they carry. Some have more than others. Jesus has given us a timeless ethic for living - "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." He also said, "my peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives." Thank goodness for that! Blessings,

PS. I have given in and joined twitter (@PreacherClay). Would love to connect with more of you. For better or worse, social media is here to stay. Please keep the Oklahoma families in your thoughts and prayers. Woodmont has set up a Special Tornado Fund that will go through Week of Compassion.

A Summer of Change by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Children & "The Bridge"
This summer holds a lot in store for my ministry at Woodmont. Justin, Thom, and I have already begun the process of learning from each other and transitioning into our new roles. If you have not heard by now, beginning in July/August Justin will be leading the Children's Ministry, Thom will switch to the Young Adults, and I will begin to work with the Youth Ministry (specifically CYF). In June after nearly six years of being at Woodmont I will be taking a one month mini-sabbatical to plan and prepare for these changes. I wanted to take a moment to say how grateful I am for both of these opportunities and share a few thoughts about each of them. About the Staff Transitions Let me first say how much I appreciate Thom Schuyler for his many years of meaningful youth ministry at Woodmont. I grew up at Bethany Hills with Thom as my counselor when I was in high school, so I know firsthand what a profound impact he can leave on people. It is such a blessing that Thom will continue to serve at Woodmont and expand his ministry by working with the Young Adults. I am also very excited for Justin to come on board to the Children's Ministry. I have no doubt his unique spiritual gifts and enthusiasm for working with children will help continue to grow and build on the strong foundation for our Children's Ministry. It is certainly bittersweet to move on from the Children's Ministry. It has been an awesome responsibility and a great privilege to watch Woodmont's youngest members grow in the ways of Christ during these last six years. Fortunately, I will still be able to spend time with the children and come to some of the exciting special events that Justin has in store, as well as provide ongoing feedback and support to Justin as he leads the Children's Ministry. On the other hand, I am so excited for a new challenge and opportunity as I begin working with the CYF Youth Ministry. I have watched most of the current youth grow up during my time at Woodmont in fact, the rising junior class was my very first Disciples Class I helped baptize back in 2007. The Youth Visioning Committee and TCYF Cabinet Members have already been so helpful in terms of planning for the future of our Youth Ministry. Together, we have lots of new great ideas and will work as a team to recruit youth sponsors, redesign the youth wing, and build on the programming and scheduling to facilitate healthy Christian relationships. It should be a very exciting year for the Youth Ministry and for me personally! About the Sabbatical After nearly six years of ministry at Woodmont, the Personnel Committee, the Board, and Clay have graciously granted me a one month period of rest and renewal to help me become the most effective minister I can be. It is common for ministers to receive a sabbatical somewhere between their fifth year and seventh year of ministry to provide a time for prayer, visioning, and renewal. I will begin my sabbatical on June 2 and will return on June 30. During this time, I will attend worship at other churches not only to renew my own spiritual life but also to observe what other churches are doing well in their own ministries. This time will not be a "vacation" but is more of a study leave to give me time away from daily office life and emailing to read books about thriving youth ministries and to meet with youth ministry experts to jumpstart some ideas. I plan to come up with a full strategic plan and vision for the CYF programming, which I would not be able to do without this opportunity. I am so grateful to the congregation for allowing this sabbatical and for your continued support that makes Woodmont a true home for Merillat and me. Although I will not be with you physically during my sabbatical, I will be with you in prayer and spirit, and I ask for your prayers during this time as well. I look forward to returning to Woodmont on June 30 full of ideas and energy for many more years of ministry together at Woodmont! Blessings,

Search Me and Know Me by Carla Schooler, Minister of Jr. High Youth

Over the past couple of weeks we have discussed Psalm 139 in our Chi Rho Bible Study and Sunday School class. The pre-teens years are consumed with identity. These are years spent defying parents, pushing limits and exploring new ideas. It is a time to grow and a time to realize where we find our value. But, I would never assume this kind of exploration stops when we become adults. I know, personally, I explore something new about myself with each passing year, with each passing day! He goes on to express that there is nowhere he can go and escape God's spirit, presence and protective hand. And then the writer comes to what feels like the very sustenance of the chapter. The place that seals God's love for him and for each of us: "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well."

This is the section that I repeat as I read it to students because this is I think David proves, as he writes this psalm, that questioning the place where David realizes and acknowledges that God formed who we truly are brings us to a vulnerable place. Arriving at this him before he was born. And I encourage you to return to that place can be difficult at least. However, our writer teaches us that in passage at the end of this article. those moments of doubt and questions of security we have a firm Because, friends, God formed all the intricate details of you. And foundation in our faith. In our origin. In our God. when he did so, he made you amazing! You are a work of God's hand and I urge you to dig deep and listen to what your soul knows David writes: very well "Oh Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I You are a work of God and his works are wonderful! sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar." ~Carla 3
