DC Public Library has five areas of primary service: Service to Children, Youth, and Teens;The Library as Community Place;Books and Other Library Materials; Technology; Adult Literacy and Learning. These areas of service tie in closely with three of Mayor Grays five priorities; Education, Jobs and Economic Development, and Safe Communities.

Currently DCPL offers access to 67 databases both in the library and remotely. Use of the online databases has increased 125% since FY2009 and is currently projected to meet the FY2013 goal of a 10% increase in searches. DCPL offers a wide variety of resources for all library customers. Some of the most widely used resources include: Proquest offers access to full text and full image articles for Historic Washington Post, Baltimore Newspapers, Histor Sun, and African-American Newspapers dating back to the 19th century. The National Newspaper ic and Current Stand provides online access to New York Times, Wall Street Journal, LA Times, and others.

Bookflix pairs high-quality children's video storybooks with factual Ebooks for preschoolers, kindergartners and beginning readers. Trueflix cover history, science and geography for ages 8-11. Freedomflix brings American history alive for grades 4 and up. Offers practice tests and courses designed to help students and adult learners improve skills and pass academic and licensing tests. Helps customers explore occupations, search for jobs, create resumes, and improve skills.

Currently DCPL offers 23,000 copies of 14,000 titles of ebooks and 12,500 copies of 9,650 titles of audiobooks. Circulation of ematerials has doubled each year,and is expected to exceed the FY2013 goal of a 10% increase in circulation of ebooks and audiobooks. Below are some recent additions and examples of what is to come. Freegal: Added in FY2012, Freegal is a free downloadable music collection that offers access to 7 million songs. Unviersal Class: Added in FY2013, Universal Class is an online learning software. Valueline: Added in FY2013, Valueline provides investment research. National Geographic Digital Archive: The archive provides access to the entire National Geographic Magaziine collection. Freegal Streaming Music: Offers a large selection of songs to be streamed online. Zinio Digital Streaming Magazines: Offers a large selction of magazines to be viewed online.

Library Happenings for Children, Youth, and Teens


Bright Smiles for a Bright Future Bright Smiles for a Bright Future Dental Van visited several DC Public Library locations in January, February, and March. The van which is equipped with the latest technology in dentistry is staffed by dentists and dental hygienists who bring top-quality care to young patients at no cost to individuals covered under Medicaid/Managed Care and no out-of-pocket expenses for the dental work provided through the program. Environmental Film Festival Six locations participated in the 20th Annual Environmental Film Festival in March. The Film Festival provided The Forest and His Friends, a selection of animated childrens films that covered topics about the environment from changes in seasons to movies about tropical rainforests and the Amazon River. Each film focused on teaching children the importance of caring for even the smallest things in our world.

Q1 Friends Activity Highlights Chevy Chase and Mt. Pleasant: The two Friends groups partnered to supply books for a March book sale at Mt. Pleasant. Francis A. Gregory:The Friends of Francis Gregory Library held their annual Chili Cook-off on March 16th. Palisades:The Friends of Palisades Library are assisting staff in providing snacks and decorations for DCPLs participation in the annual Capital Pride Parade and Festival. Petworth: The Friends of Petworth Library presented Jazz on the Lawn featuring local Brazilian jazz ensemble BatidaDiferente.

Q1 Community Activity Highlights 9 Locations:Tax Assistance provided by Community Tax Aid, Inc. and AARP. Southwest:National Assistance Corporation of America held a meeting on how to become a first time homeowner. Petworth:Yoga Activist, a nonprofit organization provides free yoga classes to the community. Lamond-Riggs:Edgewood/Brookland Family Support Collaborative hosted a Community Networking Meeting. 6 Locations:Served as Polling Places for the recent Special Elections.

Social Media Use DCPL has an online presence in many places in addition to dclibrary.org. These new outlets are changing both how DCPL reaches customers and how customers reach DCPL. More customers are able to receive library information directly via these outlets without ever having to leave the site. Adaptive Services
The Deaf Community in America: History in the Making In celebration of Deaf History Month which runs from March 13 through April 15 Adaptive Services hosted an author talk on March 16 with Melvia M. and Ronald E. Nomeland in the Great Hall at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. Mr. and Mrs. Nomeland discussed their book The Deaf Community in America: History in the Making which details the radical changes in the education of and the social structure of the deaf community in the West over the past centuries.

Small Business DC 2013 Seminar Series: Business Planning Process Six locations worked with Howard Universitys Small Business Development Center to host a series of seminars on creating business plans for new small business. The seminars focused on the importance of not only having a business plan when starting but working to change the plan and keep it updated as your business evolves to help manage and sustain your company. Creative Juices Writing Club Georgetown Neighborhood Library hosts a monthly writing club hosted by local author and poet Ginger Ingalls. The club offers a place for aspiring authors and poets to meet, share their latest work, get constructive criticism, and to work with Ginger Ingalls on different techniques to help become a better writer. The participants have been so enthusiastic about the program that they have requested that it be held more frequently so they can offer each other regular feedback on projects.
