I'm sorry for the delay. We had a little problem with one of our instrument panels. Everything is fine now and we'll be taking off shortly. Bananas can easily be found in tropical regions of the world. Bananas need plenty of rain and sunshine for most of the year. This makes bananas grow well and bear fruit all year around. A banana tree grows from a small root to three meters high. One of the suckers will grow to its full size and bear the fruit. The fruit grows downwards in large bunches. A fully grown bunch can weigh up to 35 kilos 18. Have you ever got confused about how to wrap a doll or some boxes of candies or chocolate? To make the gift-wrap paper, you'll need some old newspaper, some crepe paper, bleach, a cookie cutter and creativity. The steps are very simple. First, spread some old newspaper on a table. Put a piece of crepe paper on it. Then, dip the bottom part of the cookie cutter in the bleach. Next, stamp the cookie cutter on the crepe paper and let it dry. After that, you can use the paper to wrap the present. For decoration, you can use tissue paper to wrap the present/the package with a piece of string or ribbon 19. Almost two centuries ago, human enjoyed their first airborne ride in cloth balloon. Passengers rode in a basket fastened below the balloon. These brave adventures depended solely on the wind velocity and direction to move them about because of the lack of a steering mechanism. In 1852, a French clockmaker flew the first controllable balloon as a distance of seventeen miles. Germany began producing and using airships about forty-six years later with its famous Zeppelins, named in honor of their inventor, Con von Zeppelin. The largest and probably most famous of Germany's airships was the Hindenberg, which could travel at eighty-five miles per hour. Later, the two countries bordering on the English Channel, Great Britain and France, built smaller airships called "blimps." The later airships were intended for patrolling the coast and observing submarine activity, while the former served as passenger and cargo ships. After the Hindenberg burned in 1937, more and more people shied away from this form of transportation. 20. Adaptation is the process by which living things adjust to changes in their environment - ways of finding food, protecting themselves from their enemies, and reproducing. The protective adaptations vary with each species of animal depending on its individual needs and environment. Many animals process colors that help them blend in with their surroundings. Polar bear and white rabbits can easily move undetected amidst the winter snows. Many butterflies' colors make it difficult to find them among the trees. Chameleons can change colors to disguise themselves on rocks, trees, and wood chips. Snakes bite, bees and wasps sting, skunks omit a pungent odor, and porcupines eject painful quills into their attackers. 30. People used to send letters to communicate with others, and then Graham Bell invented telephone which makes communication easier. When mobile phones were created, it became much easier to contact people living far away from your place. Nowadays, more and more people have their own mobile phones, gadgets that apparently become must-to-have ones. It is undoubted that mobile phones have bring some benefits for people life. First of all, communication is much easier and faster with the aid of mobile phones. While letters may take days or even weeks to reach the addressee, you can just call someone in a second with mobile. If you know the number of the person you are going to call, then it is very easy to make a call. You do not need to get the operator to put you through the people you want to talk with. Making an overseas call is also easy and fast using mobile phones. Even nowadays, you can use the 3G-call in which you can see what the person you are talking to is doing. Next, mobile phones, or cell phones, enable us to send text-message, a useful service that is popular not only among young people but also adults. Although limited to a number of characters, text message is often cheaper than making a phone call. If you want to send short information, or get to know what your friends are doing, then you can just text them. With MMS, you can also send pictures, voices and other multi-media files within your message. It is indeed fun to text-message. Another reason is that mobile phones also provide entertainment. When you are bored and you want to listen to music, you can play it from your cell. Also, consider playing games with your mobiles; it is very fun and refreshing for your tiring day. Many cells now also have camera that enables you to take picture anywhere. In addition, some types of the phones also have the net connection service. So, you can browse and go online with your mobiles. More and more companies are competing to invent their new types of cells which offer many facilities and services. It is because, as we see, mobile phones, as a part of our lifestyle, give us many advantages. 35. It has been said that many people are victims of calcuholism, a dependence on the use of calculators, causing a diminished ability to do mathematics on one's own. Technology in schools, offices and industry has resulted in an unfortunate over independence on all types of modern devices, but particularly on calculators. Calcuholism can be avoided if schools and individuals concentrate on using the mind to do mathematics rather than relying on calculators for simple tasks. Obviously the term calcuholism has been coined with the intent to compare it to other addictions such as alcoholism. While it is not nearly as serious as alcoholism, dependence on the calculator can be harmful. Abuse of something normally beneficial may lead to a harmful reliance on it. It is not that

calculators are harmful, but that overuse may cause harm by causing people to forget how to do mathematics with their own minds. The problem arises from modern technological advances. In schools, classes become more complicated because of the technology for which students must be prepared when they graduate. Calculators are permitted and essential in many such classes. In offices, calculators, computers, and word processing systems are commonplace because they increase speed and improve efficiency. Business people may spend hours working with members and rarely calculate mentally. In industry as well, the emphasis on advanced machines results in individuals' solving fewer mathematical problems on their own. To alleviate the problem, schools should avoid allowing students to use calculators too early and should require sufficient in class work without them. All of us should restrict our use of calculators and strive to do math on our own so that we will not lose our basic math skills. Calcuholism has increased in recent years and will continue to increase due to advances in technology. To avoid dependency, we should do mathematics with our minds from time to time rather than with a machine. 36. A normal calculator needs only ten 'flops' for the calculation to appear instantaneous to the user. HECTOR (High-End Computing Terascale Resources), the UK's latest supercomputer based at the University of Edinburgh, operates at speeds of up to 60 'teraflops' - the equivalent of 60 million calculations per second. By October 2009 that figure will be upgraded to 250 teraflop per second. To compete with HECTOR, every person on earth would have to simultaneously carry out 10,000 calculations. As one of the largest and most advanced supercomputers in Europe, this UK Research Council facility will keep scientists at the forefront of their research fields. 37. I lifted my wet woolen gloves up to my damp eyelashes and wiped the delicate snowflakes from my eyes. I could not feel my nose and my breath was like icicles forming in the air. I was cold. I was fed up! I wanted to go home. Mum and dad had forced me and my two sisters - Jenny and Mary to go for a Sunday afternoon walk in the park. I could see my footprints in the snowy path. Like a trail of breadcrumbs in the forest showing me the way home. I stopped and listened to the magic around me. I could hear the wind howling like a stray dog hungry for a yummy bone. The branches of the trees that used to whisper and rustle had become bare, brown bones and the grass was covered with a white sparkling blanket. Then I saw a filmy web shimmer and glimmer beneath a pale sun. My breath was like silky soft smoke wafting up into the freezing cold air. Suddenly there was mum with a big cup of liquid heaven. She handed it to me with an enormous smile on her face. "Here you are Jo, this will keep you warm."I slowly sipped the delicious liquid and felt it dripping and slipping down into my tummy like lava flowing down a mountainside. My wet woolen gloves were no longer frozen but warm. My breath had thawed and I was no longer fed up or cold. I was happy and contented. 38. In its 40 year history, the university-based Mullard Space Science Laboratory has contributed to 250 rocket and satellite projects and worked with all the major space agencies around the world. Highlights include Giotto, the European probe that encountered Comet Halley in 1986, and the NASA/ ESA Cassini probe, which is now returning spectacular data from Saturn and its moons. Their latest mission, called Moon LITE, is a lunar rocket scheduled to launch in 2013. There are many scientific reasons for exploring the Moon, such as the possible existence of water. And studying the Moon's structure may unlock the secrets of how the Earth and Moon were formed by an enormous impact about four-and-a-half billion years ago. Professor Alan Smith, Moon LITE's project leader at MSSL describes its inception, 'we were looking at 'penetrators', which are high velocity impactors, instrumented probes for planetary exploration. We formed the UK Penetrator Consortium to bring forward the technology. The UK has a lot of experience in high impact technology. We had the idea of a lunar mission and simultaneously the Research Council wanted a high profile UK focus for its Space Program.' The penetrators look like missiles. They are cylinders with a sharp nose and are full of batteries and scientific instruments that will transmit information. Smith explains, 'One of the challenges is making it rugged enough, the other is operating the penetrator for a year below the lunar surface with very low power consumption and in extreme cold. We can do it, but it's going to take a bit of work. The actual penetration into the soil is actually the least of our worries because there is so much experience in the defense sector. The Moon LITE concept has been gathering momentum. The US has joined in what is called the Phase A, the technical development and testing part of the mission. Professor Smith's enthusiasm is catching, "I'm always excited about new technology. I was brought up on Apollo. It's part of how I came into space science. There's a sense that Apollo scientifically never finished the job. I would like this to finish what Apollo started. To put something on the surface of the Moon and measure really interesting scientific stuff is very exciting." 39. Mrs. Wilhelm Roentgen's hand is quite unremarkable, except for the one thing that makes it a part of history. The bones in the first ever x-ray image taken by her husband in 1895 belong to her hand. Over a century later x-rays are still in black and white, but Professor Bob Cernik at the University of Manchester may be about to change all that. This new technique will have many possible applications, from airport security and medicine, to visualizing 'flaws' in engineering projects.

As Professor Cernik explains, colours are just different wavelengths of light. 'The fundamental technique of getting fingerprints from materials using multi-wavelength x rays is not new, but getting an image from them relies on the fact that you've got a detector that is energy sensitive.' Using highly advanced instruments and detectors developed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, and the Daresmore Laboratory in Cheshire, his team devised a method of capturing all the wavelengths in an x-ray in order to create a 3D image. "What you can do is to take a sample," says Cernik, "it could be part of a suitcase or, for example, a biopsy sample. You then scan this in 3 dimensions through a very fine pencil beam of x rays. Using your single detector to look at the scattering from each point, you can build up a three dimensional image and tell what the sample is at each point of that image. That is effectively a Tomographic Energy Dispersal Diffraction Image, or TEDDI for short." The process of new system is incredibly time consuming, taking up to 19 hours for an image of a concrete core sample of four to five centimetres. A practical instrument depends on the sensitivity and on the detector's ability to absorb incredibly high energy x rays. Cernik is leading a group who are producing a working system. "In the short term we would like to have our working prototype working within two years," says Cernik, "and the rest depends on investment. It's possible that the first scanners could be working within a five year period." 40. A world like no other - perhaps this is the best way to describe the world of the rainforest. No rainforest is exactly the same - yet most rainforests are now distributed in the small land area 22.5 degrees north and 22.5 degrees south of the Equator, between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. You can find tropical rainforests in South America and Indonesia. Other rainforests flourish further from the Equator, in Thailand and Sri Lanka. Despite occupying a relatively small area, rainforests have a colossal role to play in maintaining the world as we know it. Tropical rainforests are home to a rich, colourful variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest. These forests sustain around 50% of all the species on Earth, and offer a way of life to many people living in and around the forest. Rainforests are the lungs of the planet - storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds. Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is a deliberate tactic to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump, fly or glide across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where leaves decompose into food for the trees and other forest life. They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal - and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain - your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain. Worryingly, rainforests around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate, thanks to deforestation, river pollution, and soil erosion as land is being claimed for agriculture and trees are felled for wood. A few thousand years ago, tropical rainforests covered as much as 12% of the land surface on Earth, but today this has fallen to less than 5.3%. We can only hope that the world governments work together with environmentalists and businesses to use their environmental knowledge and power to preserve the rainforests - awe - inspiring, beautiful and vital for our existence. (by Julie Bray) 41. There have been a number of important American novelists in this century, but F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of the more interesting ones. Born in 1896 and educated at Princeton, he wrote novels that describe the post-war American society, very much caught up in the rhythms of jazz. In 1920, the same year that he published his first book, This Side of Paradise, he married Zelda Sayre, also a writer. His most famous book, The Great Gatsby, appeared in 1925. Fitzgerald had a great natural talent, but he became a compulsive drinker. A brilliant success in his youth, he never made the adjustments necessary to a maturing writer in a changing world. His later novels, All the Sad Young Men, Tender is the Night, and The Last Tycoon, were less successful, so that when he died in 1940 his books were out of print and he had been almost forgotten. His reputation now is far greater than it was in his lifetime, especially were since the film version of his novel The Great Gatsby was released.

Dear Mavis, Please accept my heartiest congratulations on your recent selection for inclusion on the short-list for the NY City Writers Prize. I just heard the news today from Francis Good speed when she dropped into my office with the marked up proofs for her latest collection of stories. As you can imagine, Fran was very excited too! I am so proud of you. As you know, I have been a longtime promoter of your work, and in my mind it's about time they finally recognized your talent. In fact, I believe that your selection for the NYCWP short-list is long overdue. I have already read two of the other books that are short-listed and in my opinion they don't hold a candle to your "No Turning Back". I will read the other three books nominated and let you know what I think. Although, I could hardly be considered an objective reviewer on this one! Once again Mavis, my sincere congratulations on your nomination. Just being nominated for the NYCWP is an honor in itself. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you until they announce the winner on March 1st. Sincere best wishes, Amondeo A. 43. A. B. C. D. E. Borobudur, a famous Buddhist temple dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, is located in central Java. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs, covering a total surface area of 2,500 square meters. The monument was restored with UNESCOs help in the 1970s. It was built in three tiers: a pyramidal base with five concentric square terraces, the trunk of a cone with three circular platforms and, at the top, a monumental stupa. Around the circular platforms are 72 openwork stupas, each containing a statue of the Buddha.

44. 1. A few minutes later, we were coming in to land, the pilot made a smooth landing on the runway. It was over, and we were safe. 2. It seemed that everything was all right. 3. The engine was on fire and the plane started to rattle. 4. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are having a little problem with one of the engines. There is no need to panic. Keep your seat belts fastened. We are going to return to the airport." 5. Once something happened to me when I was on board, the plane started taking off. 6. You can imagine how frightened I was, but the crew was fantastic. 7. But suddenly I saw smoke coming from engine of the plane. 8. Suddenly the captain said to us in a very calm voice. 9. The flight attendants were really calm and told us not to worry. One of them told me to relax and said that everything would be all right. 45. PLASTIC LOGIC READER At the moment most people tend not to read on electronic devices, but the Plastic Logic reader may prove a milestone simply because it is more like paper in its size and durability. 'Not only is the display made on a lighter material, it also isn't as fragile as glass. It needs less (48) so the device can be made in a less (49) way. Secondly, the display is much larger, at 10.7 inches diagonally, making the device closer to a sheet of paper.' They are also giving it touchscreen capability, which makes it more tactile and removes the need for extra buttons on the device. 'In the future people will do a lot more reading (50) ,' says Burns. And this device looks like a step in that direction. 46. Ghost of the Day, which is written by Shannon Grill, is about a boy named Cory who is in gymnastics. He sees a girl with blond hair, pale skin, and blue eyes and thinks (48) is beautiful. But he does not know she is a ghost. Her name is Anna. One day he (49) her and a stranger answers the phone and explains that she is dead (50) if Cory comes to Fear Street to find her, he will be next. I love to read Ghost of the Day because it is a great scary book for Halloween 47. Platypus Many people call platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like duckbill. Platypus is a native Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia. Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. ... (48) body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick, and woolly layer of fur. Its bill is detecting prey and stirring up mud. Platypus eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to ... (49) sound and

light. Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus usually dig burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. ... (50), male platypus does not need any burrow to stay. 48. People are often argue about the benefits of television. There is a strong question whether television should be banned or not. Television can be an excellent teacher for everyone from very young children to the oldest of viewers. Television entertains young children with sights and songs. Television provides company for older viewers who are stuck at home with no one to talk to. New immigrants can learn English just by turning on the television. All viewers can keep informed on the latest events around the world by watching the news. On the other hand, over time, television shows have begun to show more and more violence, death and murder. The bad language and profanity on some shows make them unsuitable for families. The number of shows which deal with sex outside of marriage also shocks many viewers. And these terrible scenes are sometimes copied by young, impressionable viewers. 49. A. Finally, put it in another big pot. B. Firstly, dry a handful seeding under the sunlight C. Here are the steps. D. It will soon grow bigger and bigger and yield us some fresh chilies soon. E. Next, wait it. F. Planting is a nice activity in our spare time. G. Secondly, put the seeding on the soil. It should be in open area H. The following is guided information on how to plant a chili-plant easily. I. There will come out the sprout after that let it be bigger.

50. Chocolate starts with a tree called the cacao tree. This tree grows in equatorial regions, especially in places such as South America, Africa, and Indonesia. The cacao tree produces a fruit about the size of a small pineapple. Inside the fruit are the tree seeds, also known as cacao beans. The beans are fermented for about a week, dried in the sun and then shipped to the chocolate maker. The chocolate maker starts by roasting the beans to bring out the flavour. Different beans from different places have different qualities and flavour, so they are often sorted and blended to produce a distinctive mix. Next, the roasted beans are winnowed. Winnowing removes the meat nib of the cacao bean from its shell. Then the nibs are blended. The blended nibs are ground to make it a liquid. The liquid is called chocolate liquor. It tastes bitter. All seeds contain some amount of fat, and cacao beans are not different. However, cacao beans are half fat, which is why the ground nibs form liquid. Its pure bitter chocolate.
