A STUDY ABOUT THE PROCUREMENT PROCESSING AND PACKAGING OF GAYATHRY FOOD PRODUCTS Introduction

Rice is the staple food for 65% of the population in India. It is the largest consumed calorie source among the food grains. With a per capita availability of 73.8 kg it meets 31% of the total calorie requirement of the population. India is the second largest producer of rice in the world next to China. The all India area, production, and yield of rice in the year 2001-02 was 44.62 million hectares, 93.08 million tonnes and 2086 kg/ ha respectively. In India paddy occupies the first place both in area and production. Paddy in its raw form cannot be consumed by human beings. It needs to be suitably processed for obtaining rice. Rice milling is the process which helps in removal of hulls and barns from paddy grains to produce polished rice. Rice forms the basic primary processed product obtained from paddy and this is further processed for obtaining various secondary and tertiary products.

Industry profile Status of Rice Milling Units in India


Rice milling is the oldest and the largest agro processing industry of the country. At present it has a turnover of more than 25,500/- crore per annum. It processes about 85 million tonnes of paddy per year and provides staple food grain and other valuable products required by over 60% of the population. Paddy grain is milled either in raw condition or after par-boiling, mostly by single hullers of which over 82,000 are registered in the country. Apart from it there are also a large number of unregistered single hulling units in the country. A good number (60 %) of these are also linked with par-boiling units and sun -drying yards. Most of the

tiny hullers of about 250-300 kg/hr capacities are employed for custom milling of paddy. Apart from it double hulling units number over 2,600 units, under run disc shellers cum cone polishers numbering 5,000 units and rubber roll shellers cum friction polishers numbering over 10,000 units are also present in the country. In Kerala also rice forms the major components of the food of the people. This brings rice mill function in Kerala, especially in Ernakulum & Palakkad district. Rice mills are leading industries which have very good turn over in the business sector especially in Kerala. Kerala is one of the smallest states in India and growth of industries is comparatively low. In this circumstances rice mills plays permanent role in the growth of the economy.

Small scale industries


As the unit belong to small scale section ,it is worthwhile to analyses the growth and development of small industries before analyzing the specific problems of small scale industries before analyzing the specific problems of the unit under study. The small scale industries in our country have made significant progress not only in respect of its contribution to industrial production and generation of employment but also an achieving higher degree of satisfaction in quality up graduation and standardization. The small scale unit contributes about 40% of total industrial output and about 35% of total export earnings.

GAYATHRI RICE MILL- A PROFILE


BUSINESS PROFILE Gayathri modern rice mill is registered small scale industrial unit. The registration number of the firm is 09/01674/PMT/SSI/NIP-595 dated on 7.10.1980 The KGST registration number is 31131012 and CST registration number is 31136012 dated on 29.12.1997 From 1991 onwards, they have been doing export business and no local transaction is done. Further during the above period they had then only coolly hulling of paddy on job work basis. From 01.04.2001 onwards their live activities are as:

Export of goods endorsed to registration that is rice processing or manufacturing activities To restart rice mill business activity in local market via purchase or sale of paddy process and sales of its products. That is rice, broken rice, bran, etc This unit is traditional one. It has already established its brand name in the market.

Need and significance of the study The results of the study might be useful to the students who are studying International business and the entrepreneurs who are doing the business of rice procurement, processing and packaging and how it differs from country to country, and the legal formalities which they want to fulfill their smooth functioning of their international business . in addition it is very much helpful to the Gayathry rice mill to overcome the problem they are facing in export scenario and it helpful to attract more small and medium enterprises in the international business.

Methodology The data used for the study is in primary in nature both questionnaire and interview scheduled direct visit has been administered to collect the required information. Statement of the problem The contribution of small scale industries in Indian economy is in and around 70 % of the total economy. The research study reveals that their arise lots of export crisis in this firm. These issues raise the following questions: To identify the differences in procurement, processing and packaging export at Gayathry rice mill To identify and verify if procurement formalities differ for exports to different countries To analyse if there are process differences required based on country of exports To identify and analyse differences in packing requirement for different countries

It is favorable that goods or services are appropriate and that they are procured at the best possible cost to meet the needs of the purchaser in terms of quality and quantity, time and location. The procurement process in Gayathry rice mill : the raw materials (paddy) are procured from in and outside Kerala Major procurement centers in Kerala are Palakkad district Other states are : Karnataka , Andrapradesh and Tamil nadu
