A press release just before the opening of the Tubatse Crossing Regional Shopping Mall this week inter alia states that: Besides developing a mall that offers a well-balanced comprehensive shopping and leisure experience, it was important to us that, from its outset, Tubatse Crossing becomes a real asset for the local economy and, wherever possible, it directly benefits residents of Burgersfort and the Sekhukhune district in a meaningful way. Judging by what could only be described as a disaster in Burgersfort on Thursday morning this week, not everybody agrees, and when Platinum Gazette went to press yesterday morning, the town was eerily quiet, the new regional shopping mall was a pleasure to shop in after it opened its doors to customers at 08:00 as all the people usually in town was held up at the Bothashoek crossing by taxis blocking the road and at the Apiesdoorn bridge over the Spekboom River on the Ohrigstad road.

Mall opens to empty town

At 10:00 when the official opening function was supposed to start, some people who were supposed to be there were still stuck outside town and the mall high brass was locked into talks with those people who organised the blockade. Some of the reasons for the blockade are that the organisers of the blockade allege that too many people from outside Burgersfort received employment at the mall, that contracts around the upkeep of the shopping centre went to the businesses of family members of corrupt politicians etc. Platinum Gazette contacted the spokespeople of the development to react to these allegations, which was still awaited at the time of going to press. At the time of going to press everybody was waiting for the official opening function to start, while negotiations around the blockade were still underway. Reports of shots fired at the blockades and injuries sustanied, could not be verified before going to press.

Mashishing Thusong Service Centre opened

A R6.6 million Thusong Services Centre was handed to the Mpumalanga provincial government last week Friday. This centre will host multi-purpose community services in the Mashishing village. GlencoreXstrata Lydenburg smelter built and donated the centre. The centre will host government departments and agencies which provide essential civic services. These include the departments of Home Affairs, Agriculture, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), municipal offices and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA). As a private company operating within this area, we are delighted to make this contribution to the community. This centre is one of several critical interventions we are making in the area which amount to a total investment in excess of R100 million GlencoreXstrata said. The MEC of COGTA, SPD Skhosana and the Executive Mayor of Thaba Chweu Municipality, Cllr. B.M. Ncongwane appealed to the people to take care of the centre and not damage it as was done with facilities in the area in the past. Recently a library was burnt down during protest action. Tubatse Chrome hosted their Long Service Awards last week Thursday. The function was held at Tubatse Chrome Club. At the event employees who served 5, 10 and 15 years in the Companys employ received a certificate and gift. The certificates were handed over by Mr. Andries Ebershn. In his speech he emphasised the importance of retaining a loyal and happy workforce, especially in a volatile economy. He added that only through their hard work wealth can be created and spread in the community. He congratulated them and thanked them for their hard work. After the offical ceremony a buffet of braaied meat, potatoes, bread and salads was served.

They want to be heard

The communities of Mapareng and Malaeneng Villages last week Friday marched to the Greater Tubatse Municipal buildings to hand over a memorandum to the Mayor, Cllr. NJ Mahlake. Some of their grievances include a lack of electricity and not being prioritised in the IDP. Cllr. Mahlake did not arrive to receive the memorandum and the crowd refused to give it to a replacement.

Certificates and gifts of appreciation were handed out.

What will the impact of the new mall be?

The Tubatse Crossing Regional Mall opened its doors yesterday. This long anticipated Mall is bringing shops to the area that had never been available before. It is also set to change the economic spending pattern as well as the traffic dynamics in Burgersfort. Will service and convenience ensure that shops in the town centre survive the impact of the new Mall? We asked readers what they think the impact of the new Mall will be on things like traffic, other shops in the area and where the money will go.

Ms Helen Mohlala, Mr Lebo Makofane and Ms Petunia Mokgotho said: Many people will go to the new Mall. They wont go to the rest of town. People will be stuck in traffic, especially at the end of the month. Ms. Tebogo Moshoana said: There are a lot of people in Burgersfort. The people will split. Some will go to the Mall and others will go to the old shops. There will not be such big crowds in town any more. There will be less traffic in town but that crossing at the Mall will be a problem. Links: Me. Elize Kleinhans s: Baie mense gaan nog na die ou winkels kom want die verkeer by die Mall gaan n totale gemors wees. Ms Emily Moshwane and Ms Audelia Moshwane said: There will be too much traffic at the Mall and it will be too crowded. We think people will only go to the new Mall and not further into town to spend their money. It will be difficult for businesses further into town.

Mr Johannes Moropa and Ms Evika Mahlatji said: People will on the long term go back into town to shop, but for now people will go to the Mall because they think there are special stuff. Traffic will be worse than ever now that the Mall is opening.

Ms Aggie Mokgotho said: People will only spend their money at the Mall and will not come into town. Me. Drikie Myburgh s: Dit sal steeds There will only be bad traffic at the goed gaan met die besighede in die Mall and no longer in town. dorp. As dit baie besig is sal dit vir mense makliker wees om in die dorp na n winkel te gaan as om na die Mall te gaan. Die verkeer verby die Mall sal ook baie besig wees. By haar is Jean en Armand. Right: Ms Mary Letoka said: There will still be a big traffic disaster at that Mall/Steelpoort cross. Especially the clothing shops moved to the Mall. There will be less people and money coming into town.

Ms. Setty Mohlala said: Many people will rather go to the Mall. They must make another road or bridge from Bothashoek and Alvertons side to ease the traffic. There will be less customers in town. Only Supa Save will survive because the old people like them, but the rest will suffer.

Mr Ronald Kobe said: People will still go to the old shops. That Mall will be overcrowded. Most of us dont like these overcrowded shops. A Mall is also more expensive than the other shops. That Mall was not supposed to open before theyve finished constructing the road behind the Mall connecting to the Ohrigstad road. This weekend traffic will be a mess.

Mr Sepadi Swafo said: We like the new things. I would like to give the municipality a big applause for making shopping easier for us. People will now spend their money at the Mall and it will be difficult for the other shops in town to survive. That is why some of them has moved to the Mall. The traffic will be congested in town but the slipway to the Mall will ensure that the Mall traffic do not impact on the rest of town.

Alet will be missed

Alet Wolmarans sadly passed away after falling critically ill. Alet was a pillar in the Burgersfort community and especially her work for breast cancer awareness touched the lives of many in the area. Alet had a mastectomy after breast cancer was diagnosed. She spoke with Platinum Gazette last year October about her journey and how she would love all women to be more conscious of breast cancer and the risk factors they should be aware off. If only one woman goes for a mammogram after reading this, it would all be worth telling my story, she said. The name Alet means honourable and this was definitely one of her character traits. Caring, loving, positive and energetic is how her friends, family and the community will remember her. She will be missed as wife, mother, grandmother, mentor and motivator. Alet was laid to rest on 8 May from the AFM Church in Steelpoort. Her husband Herman and the other family would like to thank everyone for their support, loving and understanding through this difficult time in their lives. They would also like to thank everyone who cared for Alet for what they meant to her. In her own words: Life is short, make the best of every day!
