In this scenario, the novel utility of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as carbon source could serve as promising cost-effective strategy. Screening of effective SDS biodegraders led to the isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa S15 capable of concomitant SDS degradation and biosurfactant synthesis. SDS-based rhamnolipid production was proved on SDS minimal agar plates using cetyl trimethylammonium bromide-methylene blue method and optimised in SDS-based minimal salt (SBS) medium. SDS proved to be an ideal carbon source for rhamnolipid synthesis with a high substrate to product conversion rate yielding 6.9 g/l of rhamnolipids from 1 g/l SDS in 5 days. Fast atom bombardment mass spectroscopy analysis of the purified biosurfactant proved the presence of mono- and di-rhamnolipids, viz.; Rha-C10-C 10, Rha-C10-C12 and Rha-Rha-C 10-C10 with surface active properties. The secreted rhamnolipids were not utilised by S15 as a carbon source, but it caused a dispersion of bacterial biofilms in SBS medium. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on bioconversion of synthetic detergent to biodetergent. This SDSbased novel methodology presents a more economised mode of rhamnolipid synthesis utilising SDS as sole carbon source. 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York. Abstract A large number of bacteria, including agents responsible for diseases, characterise sewage-polluted seawaters. Apart from standards for bathing waters and bivalve aquaculture waters, there are no general microbiological standards applicable to seawaters to help decide if bacterial pollution is within acceptable ranges. This study represents an attempt towards the issue of comparing the susceptibility of different marine invertebrates subjected to polluted seawater with a high microbial contamination. We explored the survival rates and the microbiological accumulation of mollusc bivalves, echinoderms and crustaceans species exposed to sewage-polluted seawaters. Microbiological analyses were performed on the polluted seawater and on the homogenates of exposed and unexposed specimens. Culturable bacteria (22 C and 37 C) and microbial pollution indicators (total coliforms, Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) were measured. When exposed to the sewage-polluted seawater, the examined invertebrates showed different survival rates. In the filter feeders, bacterial densities at 22 C and 37 C rose after 96 h of exposure to sewage. The highest concentrations of total coliforms and intestinal enterococci were found in exposed bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. The concentrations of bacteria growing at 37 C were lower in the exposed deposit feeders compared to the polluted seawater. Some yeasts were absent in several exposed species although these yeasts were present in the polluted seawater. Our data suggest that the examined filter feeders, given their capability to survive and accumulate bacteria, may counteract the effects of sewage and restore seawater quality. 2012 Springer-Verlag. After continuous exposure for 72 days, activities/levels of GST, GPx and GSH were significantly higher than in corresponding control groups following exposure to 3.000 mg/L SDS and SDBS. Activities of SOD and CAT were significantly inhibited by experimental SDBS (except CAT in 0.100 mg/L group), but not by SDS. Statistical analysis of enzyme activities/levels suggested that there were significant positive relationships between GST and GPx, and negative relationships were found between GSH and CAT, GSH and SOD. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) results showed that a greater genotoxic effect was observed for SDBS than for SDS. Based on the above results, the biomarker system of mussels can be affected by the two anionic surfactants (3.000 mg/L); it was more easily affected by SDBS than by SDS. 2009. The experience was carried out under laboratory conditions, by using natural seawater collected from the sponge environment. The study demonstrates a high efficiency of the sponge in removing bacteria. Bacterial concentration significantly decreases in presence of the sponge, with a marked drop after 2 h from the start of the experience. The maximum clearance rate was 210 ml h -1 g -1 DW at 60 min. Retention efficiency reached the highest value of 61% at 120 min. The bacterial density removed by the S. officinalis filtering activity was 12.31.810 4 cells ml -1 corresponding to a biomass of about 11.71.4 g C l -1. The sponge fed preferentially large- and medium-size bacteria, whereas the small ones are fed after the removal of the largest size categories. The results obtained suggest that S. offcinalis is a suitable species for marine environmental bioremediation. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
