St. Damien
Joseph de Veuster (1840-1889) was born in Belgium and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, where he took the name Damien. He professed his vows in 1860. Three years later, although not yet ordained, he was sent to Hawaii and was ordained in Honolulu in 1864. Once he realized that a large number of lepers had been exiled to Molokai, Damien asked for and received permission to live among them and minister to them. Molokai was a lawless place, and Damien found its residents l iving in squalor. He helped them build homes, and he provided whatever medical treatment fell within his capability. In 1885, after twelve years of this ministry, Damien realized that he himself had contracted the disease. In spite of this, he continued his work until he was too incapacitated to go on. Adherents of other churches criticized him and spread gossip about his morality, but the author Robert Louis Stevenson defended him in a famous 1890 essay. Damien was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. He is the patron saint of victims of leprosy. Night at the Mission Winetasting

The Night at the Mission Committee thanks all the families and members of the community who donated and/or attended the event. The evening was beautiful, fun, and successful. The tickets sales and auction surpassed last year's amounts and will certainly benefit the school. We received generous donations from not only companies in San Diego but also throughout Southern California. Restaurants, retailers, and local attractions generously supported us and made our auction and raffle very profitable. We look forward to sharing pictures with everyone. This event would not have been possible without the help of all of our volunteers who shared their time and talent. Thank you all for making this event possible. The Night at the Mission Committee

Be sure and stop by the parking lot on the east side of Via Santa Maria (across from the horse shoe driveway) to pick up your work assignment for the Christmas in July weekend. The volunteers will be there before school and after school for your convenience.

Our parish is participating in Operation Homefronts 2013 Back-to-School Brigade as a way to assist military children with new school supplies. The goal for 2013 is to support 4,150 military children in California with a new backpack and new school supplies. This is an increase of 25% from the support Provided last year. We will be accepting new school supplies, new backpacks, or monetary donations next Sunday, May 19th, after the 7:00 am, 8:00 am, 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, and 5:00 pm masses. Operation Homefront works with distributors in the community to purchase in bulk allowing those that donate the funds to have their dollars stretch even father. If you are able to assist in anyway, please contact Virginia Ambriz at 760-213-8463.
