KS Summer Reading Assignment, 9th Pre-IB Language and Literature Due: August 20, 2013 Welcome to 9th grade

Pre-IB English Language and Literature! Your summer reading assignment is to read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, and then you must complete a creative writing assignment based on the book.

The summer writing assignment is a creative writing assignment inspired by the literature, as well as an explanation of how your writing assignment is connected to the novel.

1. First, read The Scorpio Races.

2. Second, write a creative response that is between 500-800 words. You must choose one of these four options:

i. A Trainers Manual for Water Horses. Write a how-totrain-your-water-horse guide. You can include illustrations to enhance your guide. Resource: http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Manual-fromScratch

iii. Promotional Leaflet. Create a promotional leaflet/brochure for the Scorpio Races and a visit to the island where the races take place. You can

iv. Fan Fiction: For this you have 3 choices: 1. Change the Ending 2. Change an important Scene 3. Write a new Scene Resource: http://www.wikihow.com/Write-a-Fanfiction

3. You CANNOT write a formal academic essay. If you write a formal academic essay, you will receive a 0. 4. Fourth, explain the connection between your creative task and the novel. Please attach these questions and answers to the creative task. a. What is the format of your creative response (short story, diary entry, etc.)? b. What is your creative task about? c. Why did you choose this format and this topic for your creative task?

The rubric for the creative task is attached so you can see how you will be graded. This creative assignment will be worth 10% of your first marking period grade.

2. Students are expected to have the following materials for class: a. A 3-hole Binder (at least 2 inches) with divider tabs and folders b. Loose-leaf paper to complete all work c. Pocket Folders d. Blue or black ink pen. e. Post-it notes f. Highlighter g. Portable Paperback English Dictionary
