UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE COLOMBIA Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department 2023284 Renewable energies 2013-1 Course Syllabus

Introduction The relation between energy and industry had been very important during past decades and the world energy consumption had increased so fast. Worldwide, humankind has used fossil fuels as the main source for energy production; hence, countries with lack of these resources have become energy dependent. Therefore, the harming consequences due to fossil fuels combustion cannot be neglected nowadays. New technologies should be improved and installed in order to produce either thermal, mechanical energy or electricity, on a sustainable, clean and reliable way. Actually, developed countries are leading investments on renewable energy production processes; some of them include the use of resources such as solar radiation, wind, biomass, underground thermal gradient and others. Nevertheless, this effort is not enough; in 2011 the renewable energy share of global final energy consumption was not higher than 16%, whereas electricity produced with renewable sources was 19% of global electricity produced. Objectives This course aims to present an overview of different processes and tools used for harnessing renewable energy sources, how they have been created and different paths to improve them. After the completion of this course the student will be able to: Understand the fundamentals that govern each process and how energy is produced Compare environmental assessments of different renewable sources with fossil fuel systems Design simple power generation systems using biomass, solar, wind or hydropower resources depending the location Calculate how do the changes of operational conditions affect system final efficiency based on thermodynamic properties Teachers PhD(c) Carlos Andres Forero PhD Msc Fabio Emiro Sierra Vargas caforeron@unal.edu.co fesierrav@unal.edu.co

Methodology Professor will present each topic by oral presentations; simple exercises will be developed at classroom between professor and students. They should prepare each topic beforehand based on the schedule presented the first week of the term. Meanwhile, on this week students will form groups that are going to work together on a specific topic given by professor. Results of that work will be an oral presentation and a written report; it has two parts, which might be submitted on the second month and during the two final weeks. Weekly, the students should present a short quiz based on topics covered during last lectures, they will do it either at classroom or at blackboard. Two control tests will be prepared; each one has theoretical questions and a practical part. During the semester the students will have the opportunity to do two visits to the laboratory, practices will be defined later based on equipment availability. Tests and grades Two control tests during the term will be done; each one with theoretical and practical part Control test 1, 2 50% Oral presentation 15% Quizzes, Home and self-assessments 20% Report (Mid-term and Final report) 15% Final grade varies with assistance, each absence means 0,1 less over final grade.
