OUR OWN ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL, SHARJAH ELECTROSTATICS-WORK SHEET -1 1. An electric dipole of dipole moment 20 10-6C.

.m is enclosed by a closed surface. What is the net flux coming out of the surface? 2. Define 'electric line of force' and give its two important properties. 3. An electron falls through a distance of 1.5 cm in a uniform electric field of magnitude 2.0 104 N/C .The direction of the field is reversed keeping its magnitude unchanged and a proton falls through the same distance. Compute the time of fall. 4. An electric dipole is held in a uniform electric field. (i) Using suitable diagram, show that it does not undergo any translatory motion, and (ii) derive an expression for the torque acting on it and specify its direction. 5. Define the term 'dielectric constant' of a medium. 6. How does the force between two point charges change if the dielectric constant of medium in which they are kept increases? 7. Define electric flux. Give its S.I. unit. A point charge, Q, is kept in free space at the centre of a cubic Gaussian surface of side l. What is the electric flux through one of its faces? 8. Two insulated charged copper spheres A and B have their centres separated by a distance of 50cm. What is the mutual force of repulsion? If charge on each is 6.5 10-6 C. The radii of A and B are negligible. What is the force of repulsion if a) each sphere is charged double the above amount and the distance between them is halved b) the two spheres are placed in water of dielectric constant 80. 9. Derive an expression for the electric field at a point lying on the equatorial axis of an electric dipole. Hence write the expression for the electric field due to a small electric dipole at a far off point. 10. Sketch the electric field lines around a system of two equal positive point charges placed at a distance. 11. Sketch the electric field lines around a system of two equal negative point charges placed at a distance. 12. An electrostatic field line cannot be discontinuous. Why? 13. Define electric field intensity. Write its S.I. unit. Write the magnitude and direction of electric field intensity due to an electric dipole of length 2a at the mid-point of the line joining the two charges. 14. State three properties of lines of force. Why electric field lines never intersect? 15. State Gauss theorem. Apply this theorem to obtain the expression for the electric field intensity at a point due to an infinitely long, thin, uniformly charged straight wire. 16. How does the Coulomb force between two point charges depend upon the dielectric constant of the intervening medium? 17. A charge q is placed at the centre of the line joining two equal charge Q. Show that the system of three charges will be in equilibrium if q = Q/4.

18. State Gauss theorem. Apply this theorem to obtain the expression for the electric field intensity at a point due to an infinitely large, thin, plane sheet of charge. 19. Define dielectric constant of a medium in terms of force between electric charges. 20. Charges 20nC are separated by 5mm. Calculate the magnitude and direction of dipole moment. 21. Derive an expression for the torque experienced on a electric dipole placed in an electric field E. 22. An electric dipole of length 4cm when placed with its axis making an angle of 30o with a uniform electric field experiences a torque of 4Nm. Calculate the a) magnitude of the electric field b) potential energy of the dipole, if the dipole has charges of 10nC. 23. Two point charges q1 and q2 are placed close to each other in air. What is the nature of the force between them when a) q1q2 > 0 b) q1q2< 0. 24. Define the term electric dipole moment. 25. Two point charges q1 = 5.410-6 C and q2 = - 5.410-6 C are located at the points A (0, - 5) and B (0 +5) respectively in XY plane, the distances being measured in metres. Draw a diagram and calculate the electric dipole moment of this charge system. Mark one point each in the diagram where the electric field of this system is a) parallel to its dipole moment b) antiparallel to its dipole moment. 26. Two charges of magnitude +25nC and 9nC are located at points A (1,2) and B (5,2). Find the magnitude of electric field due to these charges at the point C (5 5). All distances are in metres. ***************************
