Revision Guidelines for Year 7 Geography May/June 2013

You have studied units of work on: Introduction to Geography and Map Skills, Our Restless Planet. All aspects of the course since September will be tested; this includes class work and homework tasks. To revise fully for your exam you need to use your exercise book, work book and text book to help you. Text book: geog.1 Chapters 1, 2 and 9. geog.1 workbook sections 1,2 and 9 Length of the exam: 1 hour 30 minutes Exam structure - Two sections: Section A: Introduction to Geography And Map Skills Section B: Our Restless Planet Equipment needed: pens, pencils, eraser, ruler, calculator, colouring pencils. Topics to revise: Introduction to Geography And Map Skills: - What is Geography? The human, physical and environmental parts of geography. - Connections: recognise that people are connected to different places (at: local, national and international scales) - Types of maps: being able to draw a plan and sketch map - Direction: Identify the points of a compass and giving directions using a map. - Grid References: using 4 figure grid references and 6 figure grid references. - Symbols: using a key to read symbols from a map. - Height: reading spot heights and contour lines on a map. Identifying contour patterns. - Distance and scale: measuring straight line and actual distance on a map. Using the scale line. - Cross-sections: using contour lines to draw and label a cross-section eg: of a volcano or a valley. - A route: giving and following instructions using direction, distance, grid references and symbols. Our Restless Planet: The pattern of where volcanoes and earthquakes can be found in the world. The use of lines of latitude and longitude to locate where volcanoes and earthquakes are found. The structure of the earth. The different types of crust. The movement of the Earths plates. The names of the main tectonic plates. What happens at constructive, destructive and conservative plate boundaries. What causes earthquakes. How earthquakes are measured and described. The primary and secondary effects/consequences of earthquakes. How tsunamis are caused, the primary and secondary effects they have. The structure of volcanoes eg: magma chamber, vent, crater. What causes volcanic eruptions and what makes them dangerous (eg: ash, lava.....) The primary and secondary effects/consequences of eruptions. How people respond to disasters in the short term and long term. Why the effects of, and responses to: earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions can be different in different places. The eruption of a named volcano or a named earthquake or a named tsunami. Details about: the

event, causes, effects/consequences and responses. You will need to revise key terms as they will be needed in your answers. Questions will include the following: Maps, data, tables of information, diagrams, photographs, articles, graphs.
