Going Fishing with Jesus

LUKE 5:1-2

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the shermen had gone out of them

LUKE 5:2-3

and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simons, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat....

The Jesus Boat (27 x 7.5) is a 1st century boat recovered from the Sea of Galilee.

LUKE 5:4

And when he had nished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch....

LUKE 5:5

And Simon answered, Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets....

LUKE 5:6

And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of sh, and their nets were breaking....

LUKE 5:7

They signaled to their partners in another boat to come and help them. And they came and lled the boats, so that they began to sink....

LUKE 5:8

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord....

THE LORD
of fish and fishermen,

Here was

THE LORD THE LORD

of nature,

of men and their daily work.

LUKE 5:9-10

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of sh they had taken, and also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon,

Youre right, Simon. Away from me! You foul, unclean, wretched beast. Youre sin disqualies you from from being a follower of me....

LUKE 5:10

Jesus said to Simon, Do NOT be afraid...;

LUKE 5:10

Jesus said to Simon, Do NOT be afraid; from now on you will be catching men....

LUKE 5:11

And when they brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.

Important Question Why does Luke include this story in his historical biography of Jesus?

Following Jesus looks like MOVING OUT of our COMFORT ZONES

&

JOINING HIM in HIS MISSION.

Jesus doesnt ask about our ABILITIES or INABILITIES, but only our AVAILABILITY.

Assignment Examine: What is holding me back?

Assignment Dream: How could the future be dierent?

When Jesus calls, he certainly does demand EVERYTHING, but only because he has ALREADY GIVEN EVERYTHING himself, and has PLANS in store, for us and the world, that WE WOULD NEVER HAVE DREAMED OF.
