Maple Avenue fifth grade students start book drive to benefit two Oklahoma schools hit by tornado
Maple Avenue Elementary School fifthgrade students started a book drive May 21 and which will continue through May 29 to benefit two Oklahoma schools hit by a tornado May 20. The Uniting Kids and Community (UKC) program, which gives fifth-grade students an opportunity to organize and carry out service projects, asked families to give one instead of get one as part of the "Buy One, Get One Free" promotion at the schools book fair. Students also encouraged contributions of other new and gently used books and financial donations to help elementary schools in Moore, Okla., replenish their library shelves. Money jars were available to accept donations at the book fair and the fourth grade Frosty Freeze ice cream sale. Community members interested in joining the student effort may stop by the school office until May 29. Checks are payable to the Maple Avenue Home & School. The goal of the fifth grade UKC is to engage and empower fifth grade students to make connections with their school, local and global communities. Students learn the value of civic responsibility and problem solving by participating in planning, coordinating, promoting and implementing service projects. North Middle School hosts Memorial Day program

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Events marking the Memorial Day weekend began May 23, as North Middle School held its program to honor those who died serving America in the armed forces. The program, the first at North Middle School, was organized by eighth grade students. Tim Christiansen, commander of American Legion Post 382 in Menomonee Falls, asked students to raise their hands if they knew of someone who served in the military. More than half of the students raised their hands. Thats awesome, thats really awesome, Christiansen said. That could have been your father, your mother, your grandparent, sister, brother, uncle. They could have served during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq or in Afghanistan. Christiansen then continued: Memorial Day is about remembering those who served in the armed forces and given their lives doing so. However, you can also use this occasion to remember how important it is to take care of the men and women who return home from war. We need to ensure them top notch medical and mental health services, as well as employment. Thats the least we can do to pay them for serving our country. Christiansen asked attendees to take a moment to remember the veterans and citizens who now serve. And God bless them all, he said. Christiansen said that at one time in his life Memorial Day meant the start of summer but that he later thought about what it means. Memorial Day marks more than just the start of barbecue season, its a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy today, Christiansen said. He said he now prays for those whose lives ended while fighting for the country before he proceeds with the rest of his Memorial Day activities. Christiansen then led attendees in a moment of silence for those who died protecting the countrys freedoms. The program included the reading of essays by the finishers in the recent American Legion Americanism essay contest. The entries were among those written by the eighth grade class for the contest, the theme of which was What Freedom do I Enjoy the Most. Entries by Matt Henningsen, Katie Kruk, and Mariana Martinez read their essays during the first part of the program. Henningsen, reading from his essay, said he believed the freedom of religion is the one he enjoys the most. The freedom of religion is important because it lets us express ourselves in and it lets us believe what we believe is true, he said. In her essay, Kruk noted that some people in other countries dont have any freedoms whatsoever where they live. Sometimes even we dont respect and appreciate the freedoms that were fought for. Political and social freedoms are the two types of freedoms I enjoy the most. Kruk also noted freedoms of religion, speech and of petition as those she appreciates. We can disagree with our governments decisions and have the ability to replace our government officials, Kruk said. A video presentation in which local veterans Monica Jantz and Sean Conaway were interviewed followed. The eighth grade band then performed Light Eternal. Later in the program, eighth grade student Caitlin Ellfeson was recognized for designing the artwork for the Memorial Day program. Students Ethan Richmond and Arianna Watkins then spoke about the creation of 13 veterans-related websites that were created by eighth grade students in a computer applications class.

St. John UCC to dedicate Community Prayer Garden June 2

St. John United Church of Christlocated at N104 W14181 Donges Bay Road in Germantownwill hold a dedication ceremony to commemorate its recently completed community prayer garden after the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, June 2. There will be an ice cream social following the dedication. The prayer garden is the culmination of several years of planning by the congregation to develop land immediately east of the church that originally housed the church parsonage. The garden is designed to provide a quiet space for reflection and prayer for all members of the community. The project was exclusively funded through member donations and memorials. All members of the community are invited to attend the event and welcomed to visit the prayer garden at any time.

Keep the peace

By Tresa Erickson It's no secret. While weddings are supposed to be a source of joy, they can also be a source of conflict. As soon as the question is popped and the engagement is announced, couples are often bombarded with advice from well-meaning family and friends. Here are some tips to help you keep your sanity intact and conflict to a minimum during the planning of your wedding. Be realisticKnow from the get-go that people are going to be excited and many of them will want to be involved in your wedding planning, even if it just doling out advice to you. Involve as many of them as you can, but never lose sight of the fact that it is your wedding. Listen to what they have to say, use what you can and leave it at that. Never ever give someone the upper hand, unless it is what you and your beloved want. Be understandingSome people can't help themselves. They have an opinion and they simply must share it with you, even if it is not really their place to do so. Again, honor their need to help by listening but don't feel obligated to follow their advice. Thank them for their advice, reassure them you will take it under consideration and move on. Be directSome people cannot take no for an answer. Be aware of this and learn how to deal with the pressure. Let them know that while you appreciate their idea, it will not work for you. Do not give in and make unnecessary compromises. If they continue to push, explain to them what you have chosen to do so instead. The additional information might be enough to satisfy them. Be clearGive those involved clearly defined roles and make your wishes known to them. Communicate daily, either through email or phone, what has and hasn't been done. Set up a website to keep everyone informed of the progress. The more you communicate, the less chance there will be of a misunderstanding later. Be proactiveSpot the potential for conflict and take steps to avoid it. If your parents divorced on unhappy terms, do not expect them to work together on your wedding. Have each of them assist you with different tasks and seat them apart at your wedding. The same goes for any other family or friends in conflict. Respect their need for distance.

Around Waukesha County
Registration Now Open for J.J. Watt Foundation 5K Run/Walk May 14, 2013 (Pewaukee, Wis.) J.J. Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans and NFL Defensive Player of the Year, announced that registration is now open for the 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk in his hometown of Pewaukee, Wisconsin to benefit the Justin J Watt Foundation. The event will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Waukesha County Technical County (WCTC), in Pewaukee. For the first time, the 5K Run will be a timed race. The event will be capped at 500 participants this year. Also new this year is fundraising levels with the opportunity to earn great prizes including an autographed photo, football or VIP photo opportunity. Funds raised will benefit the Justin J Watt Foundation, whose mission is to provide after-school opportunities for children in the community to become involved in athletics, so that they may learn the basic character traits of accountability, teamwork, leadership, work ethic and perseverance while in a safe and supervised environment with their peers. In addition, the event will feature a silent auction with items such as autographed memorabilia. J.J. Watt merchandise will also be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the Foundation. We are thrilled to continue this event in my hometown and hope to provide the motivation and means to children to turn those big dreams and hard work into something incredible, says J.J. Watt. The Justin J Watt Foundation is currently accepting grant applications for school or afterschool programs for middle school aged kids (6th-8th grade). For more information visit www.jjwfoundation.org/funding-requests/ The Foundation recently held an event, the J.J. Watt Charity Classic, last month in Houston, Texas, which raised over $300,000. The costs of the KnowlesNelson Stewardship program

BY REP. DAN KNODL Wisconsin has a wonderful culture that respects and enjoys the outdoors. In order to preserve our natural resources for future generations, the Wisconsin Legislature created the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program in 1989. The program helps to preserve valuable natural areas and wildlife habitat, protect water quality and fisheries, and expand opportunities for outdoor recreation by allowing the state to borrow money and purchase land. This is an essential program for those who take advantage of our resources, but we must remember that it comes at a cost. Since 2001, Wisconsin has spent more than $458 million in borrowed funds on the stewardship program. For the current fiscal year, our debt service payments alone amount to $84,182,000. Beyond the expense of purchasing land, the state makes payments in lieu of taxes (PILT) to local municipalities to compensate them for taking land off their tax rolls. This is on top of payments the state must make on previously borrowed money. All of these expenses add up resulting in a stewardship program that is bloated and in need of reform. Recent actions taken by the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) will help reform the program in a responsible manner. Under current law, stewardship bonding authority is $60 million annually. The changes made by the JFC bring that number down to $47.5 million in 13-14 and $54.5 million in 1415. Total bonding authority was reduced by $63.5 million through 2020. The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates that this could reduce debt service payments by $98 million over the life of the program. In addition, the reforms shift the program focus from land acquisition to developing and improving state owned land. The state owns approximately 1.4 million acres and adjustments made by the JFC would cap this number at 1.9 million acres unless the JFC approves acquisitions beyond that

limit. The Department of Natural Resources is also required to put 10,000 acres up for sale by 2017 and sell 250 acres per year of productive farmland through 2020. Although changes were made to the program, the commitment to providing public access to the land remains. Grant levels for non-profit conservation organizations were maintained to preserve and improve land already owned. Recreational boating aids are also still available to develop access to many of the waterways located on stewardship lands. People have raised concerns that the reforms will curtail people enjoying our outdoors. Publicly owned lands comprise nearly 17% of total acreage in the state with counties being the largest land holder at 2.47 million acres. There is no shortage of public land available for Wisconsinites. Whether you enjoy hunting and fishing on the public land and waterways or you like to utilize Wisconsins vast ATV and snowmobile trails, the stewardship program will continue to provide many opportunities to enjoy all Wisconsin has to offer. However, we cannot continue programs without examining their future costs to the state.
