So, I took a whole bunch of different supply lists and college dorm catalogues Ive seen and thought

it might be beneficial to combine them all together. The first is from Paul Bertolino, the second from RISDs own FAQ page, and the last from my own observations as a shopper. Hope this helps! -Moriah Benton ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------THINGS TO BRING TO RISD. CLOTHES. [Although I suppose this is somewhat optional.] -Shirts *Black/Gray are great for Drawing days. Charcoal is not forgiving. -Pants *Dark colors, again, are great for Drawing. Also... expect plaster/paint as well. -Shoes *It's nice to have a junk pair of shoes too. Foundation year is messy. -Sweatshirts/Sweaters *It doesn't really get outrageously cold but it stays chilly for a good portion of the year. -Coat *If you are going home for Thanksgiving you can probably get away with leaving it at home and bringing it back with you. Nope. Bring a coat before then. -Jacket *Providence weather is temperamental. It has been very warm in the Fall/Winter and relatively cool in the Spring. -Boots *Sometimes it snows. It actually doesn't snow too much. My freshman year I think we got 3 inches total. Rain boots would come in handy the most I'm guessing. We got a lot of snow this year, so you never know how the weather will go. Nonetheless, it is good to bring boots that can withstand some serious weather conditions. -Shorts *It's hot in the first couple weeks and last couple weeks. -GLOVES/MITTENS/HATS/SCARVES -I'm hoping you guys can figure out your underwear on your own. -REMEMBER: Artist Ball is in November. It's essentially a RISD Halloween Costume Party... but a week or two late. There is also Z-Day in May during which you will be zombified. Pack accordingly. BEDDING. -XL Twin Comforter/Duvet/Whatever you want to call it. *Light colors do not do too hot with Foundation year. -XL Twin Sheets -Pillows with Cases. -Egg Carton Mattress Pad *The mattresses are bed bug proof... but because of this they are this strange plastic material. Something to make it sleep-able is always nice. **** There is really no reason to get those bed lifter things. Most RISD beds are adjustable in terms of height. Also... Like I said before Bed Bug Protectors are not really necessary ****** ART SUPPPLIES. Some of you will get e-mails from your teachers asking you to bring supplies to your first day of class. You will get these... probably at 9 pm the night before your first class. One

thing you can count on needing is charcoal. You will probably blast through about your body weight in charcoal. Enjoy. That being said... If you are particularly neurotic about clean-looking hands get "Goop" or "Gojo Hand Cleaner" or anything of that nature. If not... you will be gray. It's part of the fun. ELECTRONICS. -Laptop/Notebook *Comes in very handy but is not necessary at all. There are computer labs all over the place that you have access to. If you bring one DON'T FORGET YOUR CHARGER. I know it sounds stupid but it happens. -Printer *Again... Not completely necessary but you will need one frequently. There are printers all over campus but it's definitely nice to have one of your own. Soooo very handy. Its nice to have one of your own because you definitely will need one, and the labs are not always going to be open/their printer may not be working when you need it to be. I know the printers in Homer lab have been a bit wonky throughout the year. -Flash Drive/Jump Drive/USB Drive *You will need one of these at some point. I'm sure most of you have one. The bigger the better, really. Files can get massive if you are working on studio projects. External Hard Drives are awesome as well. -Cell Phone & Charger *I think you have access to a land-line if you bring your own phone... I only knew one person who did this and she never used it. -HEADPHONES/EAR BUDS *Don't be THAT room mate. -Extension Cords/Surge Protectors *You will not have an outlet where you need one. I can almost promise you that. RISD doesn't let you plug a surge protector into another surge protector or into another extension cord so... the longer the better. -ETHERNET CABLE *RISD wireless is actually pretty decent... but you still want an ethernet cord. Skype in the Quad is almost impossible without one. -Desktop Fan *It gets hot. No one ever expects it to be as hot as it is unless they live nearby. -Fridge *You can rent one through a company RISD works with or you can bring your own. If you bring your own you have to make sure it is acceptable by RISD's standards. If not... rent one. You can also have a microwave attached if you rent one. There are 3 kitchens in the Quad... 1 in South, 1 in Homer, and 1 in East. I think they all have microwaves in them. -Pencil Sharpener -Desk Lamp -Digital Camera *Again... Not necessary but definitely a plus. If you need to rent a camera you can do so at Media Resources in the Auditorium. BATHROOM. I think you guys can handle this one on your own. Bring a few towels, your toothbrush, etc. You don't need to bring paper towels or toilet paper... RISD supplies this stuff. If for whatever reason you can't figure this one out on your own I'm sure you can find someone to assist you with your toiletries. -Shower Caddy -Flip Flops DECOR.

One thing that seems to help people adjust to dorm life is the principle of "nesting". Bring posters, pictures, flags, paintings, maps, drawings, etc. East and South are painted white. VERY WHITE. Homer and Nick tend to be a bit less like an asylum or hospital. I'm not sure if you guys are getting put in hill houses... but they are sometimes painted outrageous colors. Whatever you can bring to make your room comfortable for you. STORAGE. -Hangers -Laundry Bag/Hamper -Bins/Boxes [The absolute worst thing to store is going to be your artwork. People tend to get creative with this.... We are at art school after all. Drawings usually get rolled and tossed under your bed. Drawing tubes.... MASSIVE ONES... can be used to store them. You will be working EXTREMELY large. Keep this in mind. ] MISC. -Umbrella -Mirror -MOVIES -Scissors -Pens/Pencils -Sharpies -Notebooks -Laundry Detergent/Fabric Softener -Pliers or a Screwdriver (Free Laundry Trick. Someone will probably wind up teaching you.) That's really all I can think of right now. If you have any other questions about what to bring feel free to ask. You should bring additional items to make yourself comfortable such as lighting, fans, shelves, etc. While you are welcome to bring additional furniture, we do not remove or store any furniture from units. If you do bring furniture, it must be in good condition and it cannot be so large, or numerous, that it creates a fire hazard. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------What RISD provides All of the first-year residence halls have: Card access building and room entry locks Fire detection and sprinkler systems Wireless internet Telephone jacks with local service Several electrical outlets

-Food storage containers (in case youre a scavenger like me; Ill probably take a lot of my leftovers back to the dorm and keep in the fridge for snacking. I got a cheap set of 17 for $2) -Lots of pajamas (Iunno. I live in my pajamas when Im not in public, soyeah.) Thats all I can think of for now. Also, added note: if youre as into displaying photos as I am, you might like a picture window. Theyre cheap and display a lot of pictures without taking up all the space on your walls.
