clara lewis 2010-2011

Hidden behind a facade, I lived in a world that didnt extend past my comfort zone, a world limited by my insecurities and controlled by others. Instead of taking steps forward into the unknown, I would always take a step back. I retreated into
the comfort of the only world I knew, and the only world I would have ever known if I didnt step out of the shadows and into

reality.

Going to a military traditional camp for six weeks, I was put into a situation where I had to do more than

respect those around me, I had to respect myself. I had to overcome the harsh bite of reality that I wasnt happy with who I was, or was affecting those close to me. dont know me. You dont know whats beneath the surface,

10 years, 432 days, 216 weekends and Clara Lewis (10) has gotten the whole packing thing down. I always have to think ahead of what we could be doing that weekend, sometimes we go to church sometimes we dont, sometimes we dont even leave the house. The usual load Clara brings consists of a nice pair of shoes, 2 or 3 t-shirts, comfortable shoes, some jeans an sweats, a nicer shirt, and a skirt. Clara may be used to packing so often but that doesnt make the experience less miserable for her. Packing is horrible, I always have to take dirty clothes because we dont wash them during the week. Friday arrives and anticipation mounts in the students as the clock hand inches its way towards 2:20. The school bell finally rings, and talk for the upcoming weekend buzzes throughout the hallways, students complaining about projects, making plans to hang out, and relishing in the thought of the two day break. But this isnt always the case for Clara Lewis (10). Ten years prior, Claras parents split up. Her, her mom, and her two brothers moved to Louisville while her father remained in Owensboro, Kentucky. Since then, every other weekend has consisted of a four hour round trip to visit her dad. Leaving Friday night and returning late Sunday, Lewis often has trouble transitioning from one home to another. When Clara was in middle school, she was often troubled with the fact that she was the only one with divorced parents. I did know some kids who were in the same situation as me but not many since I was in Oldham County. I had a lot of trouble with it back then when the reality had sunk in. Clara says, I look at it with different eyes now, Im not thankful but understanding, life doesnt turn out

how you want it always. I know the true meaning of the statement home is where the heart is, I have two houses and I can call both of them my home, now. Clara has more than just trouble identifying what her home is. Susan Lewis, Claras mom saysI think its really good for her to see her dad as often as she does, not many people have that opportunity with divorced parents. But it does have its drawbacks. Its hard for her to find time for friends. On top of that, expenses, and traveling are difficult too. Over the years, Clara has found it particularly hard to keep up with her social life as well as family life. I have friends from all different schools so its hard to keep up with those friendships when I am gone so often. although this moving around is hard for Clara, she doesnt regret it, I wouldnt give it up for anything, I am really close to my dad and thankful that I can have such a good relationship with him. I wish I could see them more often, Peter Lewis, Claras father admits on the subject of his kids. If I could change the arrangement in anyway i would have us all living in the same time where the kids would spend one week with each of us and were still able to go to the same school. I hope they feel at home here

deck sports, and dinner followed. Every few nights they would have free time in the evening. From the time I woke up to the time I went to sleep, I had had a full day. I valued sleep the most of all. I love Culver but sometimes its comparable to school in terms of how miserable it can be. Lewis says. The camp is very heavily set on military traditions. Campers have strict uniforms for every occasion and violating them results in deductions of deck points. Campers march in formation to every meal and must stop and salute their superiors. Since campers have to march for a score 3 times a week, there are a lot of mixed feelings on it. I love marching! I mean you get to carry a sword or saber, wear medals, and basically look like a boss. The downside is that you have to ignore the bugs that bite you when you stand at parade rest, and the sweating is a pain. But I think it is so worth it. Caitlin Trickey (12) says. Most noteworthy of all though is the people you meet from all different cultures and ethnicities. Ranging from Mexico to Italy, Culver contains kids from all over the world. Lewis described her deck as a family: After youve spent 6 weeks with these girls giggling about boys, complaining about our evil counselor, and groaning during marching, you get pretty close. I love that giddy feeling you get in your stomach when you see the Welcome to Culver sign the day camp begins and bawling your eyes out when camp finally ends. Lucy Johnston (9) says when asked her favorite thing about Culver. Lewis will be returning for the next 2 summers as well, it being a tradition.

Summer: A time for endless leisure, a time to stay up till the early morning and sleep well past the afternoon, and especially a time for doing whatever you feel like. 2 months of freedom for every student. But for Clara Lewis (10), more than half of her summer is devoted to going to camp at Culver Military Academy. Located in Culver, Indiana, the camp is on CMAs campus and is just off Lake Maxinkuckee and Academy Road. Divided into different specialty camps, Culver is for everyone. There is Woodcraft Camp, Naval School, Girls Upper Camp, Troop, and Aviation. Lewis, who attended Girls Upper camp was exposed to many things that differed from daily life. Being awoken by Reveille, Lewis started off everyday at 6:30 sharp. From there, she changed into her uniform. The orderly called lineup and the 35 girls in deck 5 got into 4 lines at parade rest, soon to march to breakfast. First Sergent Emma Abessionio (10) called role from there as each girl went to Attention to call out Here Maam. Classes, lunch,

Anticipation mounted as the Great Race drew nearer and nearer. With every deck practicing hard and often, emotions ran high, each girl showing a competitive streak. The Great Race is composed of several events, everything from crew, whearies, running, basketball, ice skating, and so on. Each deck, desperate to win, entered the race with the determination. In the summer of 2010, the win went to Deck 5, Clara Lewiss deck. I have so much adrenaline pumping through me that day, I could shoot through the roof! Sarah Jamieson (10) says. As Anchors Away plays, campers from Woodcraft, Naval School, Girls Upper Camp, Troop, and Aviation march to the beat, each step in sync. From standing in Parade Rest, to Attention, and then onto Present Arms, each camper has to be as precise and swift as possible in order to get a good marching score. From the time the campers arrive to the time they are done marching, they have been standing in the sun for 30 to 40 minutes, most dont have a problem with it. I love the feeling when one person shouts a command and 1500 kids do the same movement at once. Alexandra Schurman (12) says. I also love the songs we get to sing when were not doing retreat, especially if we just make them up in that moment. Although marching can be diffiult, many campers think the tradition of it outweighs the misery. You get used to the marching, Culver would not be the same without the military discipline. Daniela Lopez (10) admits. Words by Clara Lewis, Photos by Tammy Lewis

After learning what really happens at slaughterhouses, Clara Lewis makes the switch to being a peskitarian Words & design by Clara Lewis Going into Spring break of 2009, Clara Lewis (10) never thought she would return home with a whole new mind set and moral values. After watching a particularly gruesome documentary on HBO, Lewis made the decision to become a vegetarian and soon after, a peskitarian. A family friend that went with us had just become a vegetarian so there was already influence over me. But the thing that really changed my mind was the documentary Death on a Factory Farm, after that I couldnt even think about eating meat without feeling sick. Lewis says. Why call one animal a pet and the other dinner? Savannah Reinecke (9) reasons, If slaughterhouses had glass walls, wed all be vegetarians. Though Lewis agrees that animals were put on this earth for food, she disagrees with the cruelty of their treatment. When someone is eating a hamburger, they dont give a second thought about what animal died for that.

out.
Lewis wasnt really aware of just how much her life would change when she stopped eating meat. Along with a vastly new menu, Lewis also noticed a change in the amount of energy she had. My mom thought I was amemic and I had to go and get my blood tested, it turned out I wasnt but my parents and I were still concerned with my lack of protein. The summer before sophomore year was when I decided to make the switch to eating seafood. Lewis says. Going to a highly physically demanding camp, she needed the protein, I never really ate seafood before because I didnt like it but I needed it for my health. Lewis isnt alone among her friends, a lot of whom are either vegetarians or peskitarians. I just decided that I didnt like meat anymore. I eat only seafood. Ali Darst (10) says. Other friends have different beliefsI believe that animals like pigs and cows were put on this earth for us to eat. Thats what they were meant for thousands of years ago and what theyre meant for now. Im at the top of the food chain. Sadie Birchfield (10) says.

Clara Lewiss (10) love for animals doesnt stop with her eating habits, Lewis owns a total of 9 pets between her Mom and Dads house. She has 2 golden retrievers and 1 shitsu at her Dads house along with 2 cats and a chinchilla. At her Moms house she has a corgi and 2 more cats. We do have a lot of pets but I wouldnt replace them when theyre gone. I love them dearly. Tammy Lewis, Claras step mom confesses, Theyre a hassle and if I did it over again I wouldnt have so many. I hate to say I pick favorites but I like my pets at my Moms house more. Theyre not nearly as strange as the ones at my Dads Lewis says.

For breakfast in the morning, Clara Lewis (10) has to always make sure she gets enough protein in for the day, so she eats eggs. They do say breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Lewis jokes.

A favorite thing that Clara Lewis (10) likes to pick for lunch is the veggie delight at Subway. I like to pick the Veggie Delight too when I go to Subway, its definetely a change of pace Allison Palmiero (11) says

With my recent switch from vegetarian to peskitarian, I have really started to like shrimp, Clara Lewis (10) says about her last meal of the day. Trying to get in as much protein as possible, Lewis eats seafood often.

The documentary that started it all appeared on HBO April 2, 2009 while Clara Lewis (10) was getting ready for bed. More intrigued than entertained, Lewis kept watching the documentary despite its gore and her morals. The documentary called Death on a Factory Farm follows undercover animal rights activist Pete, who keeps a hidden camera on him while investigating Wiles Hog Fram. Though he is a vegan, Pete sets aside that lifestyle, eats meat, and takes part in the cruelty so he can reveal the true nature of certain slaughter houses. It was disgusting and horrible, but I kept watching it. They may say ignorance is bliss, but this is one thing I didnt want to be left in the dark about. The very next day my mom made bacon and I thought I was going to throw up from the smell. I havent eaten pork, beef, or chicken since the day I watched it.
