Pastors Perspective
Our Southwest Texas Annual Conference session starts on Thursday, June 6 in Corpus Christi. Carolyn Brown will represent Berkeley at this four-day gathering of laity and clergy from more than 300 United Methodist Churches in south Texas, from Austin to the Valley, and from Corpus to San Angelo (and beyond). Its a time for business meetings and decisions, but much more for worship, fellowship and experiencing the breadth of Gods call and our response throughout our area. Berkeley has a connection to several happenings at this session. Two former pastors, Rick Ricker and Patti Herndon, will be recognized as retired clergy this year. Kallie Green, who just graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango and will enroll at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas next fall, will be listed for the first time as a certified candidate for ordained ministry at the clergy business session. Carolyn and other laity in the Austin District will usher at the ordination service, at which I am honored to serve as one of the liturgists. All churches have voice and vote during the business sessions. This year, we will consider the work already done toward the unification of the Southwest Texas and Rio Grande Conferences, and discuss future steps toward uniting as the Rio Texas Conference in January 2015. The goal is to better serve our rapidly changing and growing mission field, rather than to preserve existing structures as long as possible. The vision of the new conference is Uniting Peoples, Vitalizing Congregations, Developing Leaders, and Transforming Communities. I am grateful to Carolyn for her willingness to spend her time and attention preparing for, and then attending, this intense yet rewarding and worshipful conference. I am also grateful to Steve Collins, a certified lay speaker, for preaching at Berkeleys worship services on Sunday, June 9 as the final worship service of the conference session is held. Most of all, I am grateful to all the faithful members of this church whose prayers, service and generous giving make possible our varied United Methodist ministries throughout our area and the entire world. I love to tell the story of unseen things above, Of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know tis true, It satisfies my longing, as nothing else can do, I love to tell the story, twill be my theme in glory, To tell the old, old story of Jesus and His love. I love to tell the story for some have never heard The message of salvation from Gods own holy word. I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

Telling Our Story

I was singing this hymn the other day with some folks, when the third verse struck me as so pertinent to the call we have at hand. I had never noticed this verse before, it was just part of the pretty melody that was so familiar to me. But this time, these words jumped off the page! The United Methodist Church is encouraging members to tell the story, to witness our faith, to develop our willingness and ability to spread the Good News. Even if you think folks know the Salvation storythe Good News of John 3:16something personal happens in sharing it. Try it...why are we hesitant? What are we waiting for? Are you scattering (isnt it called broadcasting?) seeds in your garden of faith?

Mission U Wants You!

The Mission U weekend, formally known as School Of Christian Mission, will take place July 11-14 at Mt. Wesley in Kerrville, TX. There will be three studies offered during the weekend. One will be a geographical study, Roma of Europe, a social issues study, Poverty, and a spiritual growth study, Living Sacramentally/Walking Justly. Each study will have program resources which may be ordered from www.umwmissionresources.com and shipped to you. There will be childcare offered for all ages with studies for children over age three. If you

can only attend for one day it will be on Saturday, May 13 for the Living Sacramentally/ Walking Justly study. There is always a mission project, and this year we will be collecting items for sewing kits. More information will come later on the items and collection dates. Summer Intern Arrives June 12

Erica Knisely, a student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, will begin her tenweek pastoral internship at Berkeley on June 12. Each APTS student completes a Supervised Practice of Ministry component during seminary. Erica is the third APTS student who has asked for assignment to Berkeley UMC; Jessica Goad (now associate pastor at First UMC, Flagstaff, AZ) and Katie Frederick (graduating this year and entering a yearlong chaplaincy residency at Vitas Hospice in San Antonio) have served here in 2011 and 2012. We asked Erica to share something about herself: I am a Texan. I was born in Plano. I graduated from high school and college in Kansas. This means that during March Madness you will see me cheering for the Jayhawks, not the Longhorns. I made it back to Texas as quickly as I could, moving here in 2001 for graduate school. My degree is in Public Affairs, and I worked with community health care centers across the state for almost 7 years. Due to my work, which kept me on the road, I have seen more small, Texas towns than most people who live here. My absolute favorite place to visit in Texas is Marfa, where I spent my honeymoon with my husband, Patrick. We have been married for a little over two years. We met in an improvised comedy class here in Austin. Hes really funny and makes me laugh all the time. We have even gotten on stage together to perform a few times. As far as hobbies go, I love to dance, play board games with friends, and watch Doctor Who. I also enjoy listening to live music, especially acoustic folk. I love to hike and am proud of the three major hikes that I have completed thus far: Gokyo peak in the Everest region, the Grand Canyon, and the Machu Picchu trail. While I was always the slowest hiker in my group, I had a great time! I have felt called to ministry since my undergraduate days, and finally heeded the call a few years ago. I have just completed my second year at Austin Seminary, and I thrive in an academic environment. One of my favorite subjects is Hebrew exegesis. Be prepared: it is very likely that you will hear me preaching from the Old Testament this summer. I look forward to meeting all of you and to our time in fellowship with one another this summer. Thank you for welcoming me into your congregation with open arms.

Welcome, Confirmands!
On Pentecost Sunday, May 19, Berkeley welcomed three new professing members: Cameron Burns, Emily McClanahan, and Julia Wasson. They undertook several months of study and prayer in preparation for confirming their faith publicly and taking membership vows to uphold their church with their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Their mentorsKim Royal, Larry Schmidt and Rachel Trudellaccompanied them on their journey of faith and, along with parents and other family members, stood with them during their confirmation. Please welcome these young persons and celebrate the gifts they bring to our household of faith.

Erica Knisely, our pastoral intern, will accompany Berkeleys youth on their mission trip to San Antonio, June 23-29. As part of the youth group from Bee Creek UMC, they will work with Blueprint Ministries in San Antonio, one of the sites of this summers UM ARMY (United Methodist Action Reach-out Mission by Youth). For years, this youth ministry program of our annual conference has provided Christ-centered quality youth work camps that serve people in need, and promote spiritual growth and leadership development in youth. Our group will engage in construction projects that make a difference to senior adults and people with disabilities. Adult supervision is provided at all times. Thanks to Letha Peters for organizing participation by our youth and their families; to our United Methodist Women for providing financial support for the trip; and to Rev. Laura Heikes and Tracy Sherrod, youth director at Bee Creek UMC, for graciously inviting our youth to participate in this trip with them.

The month of June has five Sundaystime for a fifth Sunday pot luck! Let's get together for an old fashioned Methodist picnic in the CLC after second service, Sunday, June 30. It's sure to be fun! The weather will be warm, so bring your favorite summer recipe to share: salads, sandwiches, fried chicken, desserts, whatever your fancy. Lemonade and tea will be provided. For the program, Carolyn Brown, Myrna Cavender, and Susan Curtis will share highlights from their Honduras mission trip. Those three are always fun and interesting! The Spiritual Care Committee (Rachel Trudell, chair), and Congregational Care Committee (Mary Lynn Smith and Claudia Wenzel, chairs) will be your hostesses.

We did something...and we are going to change the world a little bit for some homeless students at Crocket and Akins high schools. In addition, we reached out to our neighbors and some of our childcare workers. Berkeley UMC came through again! Preliminary numbers from the Change the World event show that we cleared in excess of $1,000. Its not possible to name all the people who helped in some way, so find yourself in one or more of these areas: planning committee, yard work, donations, music, volunteers of all ages, a new BUMC brochure, the Dana Center (for information on education for homeless students), and those who purchased something or made a monetary contribution...or anything I might have omitted. Who is a Homeless Student?

According to the McKinneyVento Act and Texas state law, homeless students may live: In a shelter (family shelter, domestic violence shelter, youth shelter, or transitional living program); In a motel, hotel, or weeklyrate housing; In a house or an apartment with more than one family because of economic hardship or loss; In an abandoned building or a car, at a campground, or on the street; In a temporary foster care or with an adult who is not the parent or legal guardian; In a substandard housing (no electricity, no water, and/or no heat); or With friends or family because they are a runaway or unaccompanied youth. - Texas Homeless Education Office

The FreeStore is up and running! Right now it is open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am 1pm. Donations are accepted Monday Thursday (Note that these times are subject to change). This is not a thrift store. It is a place for people to sit down, have a cup of coffee, and chat while waiting for their turn to shop. It is a community, showing Gods love and grace by accepting all and sharing a few items they might need. Consider volunteering a few hours. Check out their website at www.freestoreaustin.org/.

Book Review: The Three Little Pigs by Steven Kellogg

- Mark 9:36-37 Im sure all but the very youngest members of our congregation are familiar with the story of the three little pigs and their three houses, each of which was built with a different material: straw, sticks, and brick. Of course if you know that much, then you know about the big bad wolf. But unless youve read the account that I recently read, you dont know the pigs names, their family enterprise, and their educational background. This is delightfully covered with some amazingly detailed drawings in Steven Kelloggs version of the story, recommended for children 4 8 and available at the Austin Public Library. In case youre wondering why I was reading the story to begin with (and even if you werent), Ill tell you. For the last two years Ive volunteered for Austins Partners in Education program (https:// austinpartners.secure.force.com/ FindOpportunities). Volunteers may be classroom coaches in reading or math or may serve as mentors. Since I love to read and want to spread that love, I signed up to help second-graders with their reading. A curriculum is provided, but every few weeks theres a read aloud day in which the coach reads to the students. This past year I coached four adorable children at Odom Elementary School. My time commitment was about 90 minutes a week, which included drive time. It is a very rewarding activity and the attention means A LOT to the students. Their enthusiasm meant a lot to me. Please consider the difference you can make in the life of a child and contact Austins Partners in Education.
