Reliable access to electrical power is a basic requirement of modern society, in private life, in the public sector and in industry. Our challenge is to be the market's leading developer and manufacturer of high voltage equipment. The goal is to enable safe and effective transfer and distribution of electrical power with the least possible environmental impact. Development in recent years has focused on finding solutions that increase availability in power grids. Our modern high voltage equipment can make substantial contributions in improving the standard of living for consumers of electricity all over the world.
High voltage technology is a core activity with long traditions at ABB. The center of operations is in Ludvika, Sweden, where many innovative ideas have been born and realized. Today's operations are more intensive than ever. We are the world's largest manufacturer of high voltage equipment and have customers in most countries. Our production of surge arresters, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, capacitors and substation modules is conducted with advanced production technology in modern plants that maintain extremely high levels of quality. Operational reliability is one of the most important qualities of our products and they have demonstrated their robustness and reliability in all types of operating environments and climates.
ABB

Instrument transformers
Our complete and modern product assortment encompasses current transformers and inductive and capacitor voltage transformers in the voltage range 36 800 kV. They are oil-insulated and most are filled with quartz sand, which is a unique ABB solution entailing that the amount of oil can be minimized. Our instrument transformers are primarily used for revenue metering, control, indication and relay protection. All instrument transformers are customeradapted for the preferred metering and protection classes, and all environments and climates. If requested, we can supply most types with silicone rubber insulators. The instrument transformers can be easily integrated with our substation modules, withdrawable circuit breakers (WCB) or disconnecting circuit breakers (DCB). And with a simple bracket, they can be combined with our conventional circuit breakers. Our instrument transformers are produced in modern and highly automated plants with very high levels of cleanliness to assure high quality.
Surge arresters
Our well-known EXLIM and PEXLIM surge arresters are both based on ABB's high quality zinc oxide block, which is characterized by very good energy absorbing capabilities, high safety margins and long service life. EXLIM has porcelain insulators while PEXLIM has insulators of silicone rubber. The PEXLIM assortment offers considerable flexibility through low weight, and opens opportunities for new application areas, such as line arresters. The low weight simplifies installation and permits mounting in tight spaces and at nearly any angle. The assortment covers all existing applications for system voltages 52 800 kV with line discharge classes 2 5.

Power capacitors
Capacitors fill an important function in transmission and distribution networks. Efficiency in networks, as well as voltage, quickly decrease when burdened with reactive power, harmonics and transfer of dissipation power. Efficiency improvements are normally achieved through reactive power compensation as close to the load as possible. Overloads on transformers, lines and cables are avoided through the installation of a need-adapted capacitor bank that is either connected in series or in parallel with the network.
For intermediate voltage networks, there are enclosed banks SIKAP and ABBACUS, for increased personal safety. ABBACUS is supplied with automatic power regulation in several steps. Banks for special applications, such as pole installation, container-built filters, three-phase units, grading capacitors, etc. are also available.
DryQ
The DryQ dry capacitor represents the latest in capacitor technology, making it possible to build shunt banks in a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. The lack of impregnating oil eliminates the risk for oil leakage, and consequently, the risk for fire. Banks with DryQ are supplied as complete units with associated frames, enabling rapid installation and commissioning.
Harmonics
Harmonics in a network create several types of problems, for example, losses in machines and apparatuses, disturbances in overriding and adjoining networks, equipment failures and resonance problems between the network's inductive and capacitive parts. Measures for dampening harmonics vary depending on the type of load in which they are generated and their location in the network.

Filters
ABB supplies custom filter solutions, both active and passive filters, depending on the nature of the problem. Passive filters are supplied as band pass (BP), high pass (HP) or C-filters. Our comprehensive assortment of high voltage applications embraces both conventional HiQ oil-impregnated capacitors and DryQ dry-insulated capacitors. QBANK open shunt capacitor banks are available for voltages up to 550 kV. CHARM, open banks for filter applications are supplied as BP, HP or C-filters, rated up to 550 kV.

Substation modules
ABB has extensive experience in building substations for high voltage systems. This experience is very beneficial in development of our high voltage equipment. Because it embraces all types of high voltage equipment needed in a modern substation, we can coordinate development of the various equipment types so that they fit together in an optimal manner. An example of this is the development of our compact substation modules, where today's nearly maintenance-free high voltage circuit breakers permit the elimination of conventional maintenanceintensive disconnectors. This reduces the need of removing busbars from service, enabling simpler busbar solutions. With our modern high voltage circuit breakers as a base, we offer two alternatives that provide opportunities to both simplify substations and save space.
