New ideas mean smarter substations

At ABB in Ludvika, we have a tradition of innovative development in electrical power technology that is more than 100 years old. We are now furthering this tradition, with our sights set on the future. What this largely concerns is building intelligent functions in components and substations. Just during the past decade, a number of ideas have been realized for groundbreaking products that increase availability and reduce overall costs for network owners and distribution companies. Below are a few examples of this.

Motor operating mechanism Motor DriveTM

Motor Drive is a new operating mechanism for high voltage circuit breakers that has just one moving part the rotor in a servo motor. The circuit breaker's contact movement is monitored and actively controlled throughout the switching sequence using position indicators that transmit information about the circuit breaker's contact position to the control system. Improved operational reliability Integrated constant monitoring No need for preventive maintenance Low noise level

Controlled switching, SwitchsyncTM Controller

With SwitchsyncTM Controller, a high voltage circuit breaker's operation can be controlled so that connection of a load occurs at a predefined point on the sinus curve. Minimizes risk for high switching transients that can cause damage to high voltage equipment Reduced risk for faults on low voltage side and in the control system Improved electrical quality

DryQ The silent capacitor

The DryQ dry capacitor represents the latest technology in the field of capacitors, making it possible to build shunt banks in a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. The absence of oil entirely eliminates leakage risks. Banks with DryQ are supplied as complete sections with associated frames, which enables rapid installation and commissioning. Environmentally friendly Low noise level Self-healing insulation

ABB

EXCOUNT-II Surge arrester monitor

EXCOUNT-II is a user friendly device for monitoring both surge arresters and overvoltages in power grids. The device is connected to a surge arrester in the same way as traditional counters. In supplements to registration of total overvoltages, EXCOUNT-II provides information on the time of day, date and amplitude of the overvoltages. With EXCOUNT-II, total and resistive leak currents can also be measured. Short-circuit proof Simple and safe metering High information content

Compact substation modules

With our new concept of withdrawable and disconnecting circuit breakers, substations can be built without conventional, maintenance-intensive disconnectors. Reduced numbers of components provide opportunities for simplified substation solutions. Reduced maintenance requirements Increased availability Reduced space requirements Reduced overall cost

Composite insulators Open new doors

Silicone rubber insulators were introduced on ABB's surge arresters as early as 1985. The material gives the insulators high mechanical strength and substantial resistance against various types of air pollution. All of our high voltage apparatuses can now be equipped with composite insulators. Excellent performance even when dirty Explosion safety Superior in regions with risk for seismic activity Minimized risk for transporta- tion and installation damages

High voltage circuit breakers

Our high voltage circuit breakers are available in both puffer and Auto-PufferTM designs. The breaking medium is SF6 gas. The HPL puffer circuit breaker has been manufactured and refined since the 1970s and demonstrates exceedingly high switching reliability, from small inductive and capacitive currents to short-circuit currents of up to 80 kA. The LTB Auto-Puffer circuit breaker was developed during the 1980s. The difference in comparison to a conventional puffer circuit breaker is that it breaks using the arc's own energy. Both the HPL and LTB have break times shorter than two periods and thus minimize damage to the power system if a short circuit should occur. Because all of our circuit breakers use our unique patented contact system of silver-plated copper, the circuit breakers attain high performance and long service lives. For operation, our well-proven spring operating mechanism is used, assuring high operational reliability. The motor operating mechanism Motor DriveTM is now also available as an option for LTB circuit breakers.

Disconnecting circuit breakers

The Combined disconnecting circuit breakers comply with the requirements for both disconnectors and circuit breakers, and have been tested in accordance with the IEC standard for disconnecting circuit breakers. Disconnecting circuit breakers can therefore replace the conventional combination of circuit breakers and separate disconnectors in high voltage substations. This permits compact substation layouts with high availability and minimal maintenance.

Instrument transformers
Our complete and modern product assortment encompasses current transformers and inductive and capacitor voltage transformers in the voltage range 36 800 kV. They are oil-insulated and most are filled with quartz sand, which is a unique ABB solution entailing that the amount of oil can be minimized. Our instrument transformers are primarily used for revenue metering, control, indication and relay protection. All instrument transformers are customeradapted for the preferred metering and protection classes, and all environments and climates. If requested, we can supply most types with silicone rubber insulators. The instrument transformers can be easily integrated with our substation modules, withdrawable circuit breakers (WCB) or disconnecting circuit breakers (DCB). And with a simple bracket, they can be combined with our conventional circuit breakers. Our instrument transformers are produced in modern and highly automated plants with very high levels of cleanliness to assure high quality.

Surge arresters
Our well-known EXLIM and PEXLIM surge arresters are both based on ABB's high quality zinc oxide block, which is characterized by very good energy absorbing capabilities, high safety margins and long service life. EXLIM has porcelain insulators while PEXLIM has insulators of silicone rubber. The PEXLIM assortment offers considerable flexibility through low weight, and opens opportunities for new application areas, such as line arresters. The low weight simplifies installation and permits mounting in tight spaces and at nearly any angle. The assortment covers all existing applications for system voltages 52 800 kV with line discharge classes 2 5.

Power capacitors

Capacitors fill an important function in transmission and distribution networks. Efficiency in networks, as well as voltage, quickly decrease when burdened with reactive power, harmonics and transfer of dissipation power. Efficiency improvements are normally achieved through reactive power compensation as close to the load as possible. Overloads on transformers, lines and cables are avoided through the installation of a need-adapted capacitor bank that is either connected in series or in parallel with the network.

For intermediate voltage networks, there are enclosed banks SIKAP and ABBACUS, for increased personal safety. ABBACUS is supplied with automatic power regulation in several steps. Banks for special applications, such as pole installation, container-built filters, three-phase units, grading capacitors, etc. are also available.

DryQ
The DryQ dry capacitor represents the latest in capacitor technology, making it possible to build shunt banks in a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner. The lack of impregnating oil eliminates the risk for oil leakage, and consequently, the risk for fire. Banks with DryQ are supplied as complete units with associated frames, enabling rapid installation and commissioning.

Harmonics
Harmonics in a network create several types of problems, for example, losses in machines and apparatuses, disturbances in overriding and adjoining networks, equipment failures and resonance problems between the network's inductive and capacitive parts. Measures for dampening harmonics vary depending on the type of load in which they are generated and their location in the network.

Substation modules

ABB has extensive experience in building substations for high voltage systems. This experience is very beneficial in development of our high voltage equipment. Because it embraces all types of high voltage equipment needed in a modern substation, we can coordinate development of the various equipment types so that they fit together in an optimal manner. An example of this is the development of our compact substation modules, where today's nearly maintenance-free high voltage circuit breakers permit the elimination of conventional maintenanceintensive disconnectors. This reduces the need of removing busbars from service, enabling simpler busbar solutions. With our modern high voltage circuit breakers as a base, we offer two alternatives that provide opportunities to both simplify substations and save space.

Disconnecting circuit breakers

In a disconnecting circuit breaker, the disconnecting function is conducted by the circuit breaker's own contacts, which are well-protected in the breaking chamber. A disconnecting circuit breaker thus replaces the conventional combination with a circuit breaker and separate disconnector. A reliable interlocking system in combination with a motorized grounding switch and clear indication of the contact position provide full personal safety.

Withdrawable circuit breakers

The withdrawable circuit breaker is designed to constitute a part of a complete type-approved substation. The circuit breaker is trolley-mounted and is moved between the closed and open positions using a motorized moving device. The stationary primary contacts are maintenance-free. With the withdrawable circuit breaker as a base, we can provide complete, type-tested circuit breaker bay modules including busbars. The high voltage equipment includes all the necessary functions for a circuit breaker bay and can be supplied in high profile configurations for outdoor substations and in low profile configurations for indoor substations. IMB current transformers can be installed on the circuit breaker module's frame Line entrance bays, which can include voltage transformers, grounding switches and surge arresters, are also in the assortment.
