Story on page 3
Animal Lifer May 2013 3
10:00 am
Upon arriving home, and before bringing
this "house-trained" stray inside, we walk
him again. T. pooped! Doggie digestion
has now become an essential interest in our
daily lives. Still on the leash, we take him
in the house and introduce him to all the
rooms. The dog books say you have to
"own" the space and let him know that you
are "allowing" him into it. We try to act
like "owners."
1:30 pm
Dog books also say the proper way to bond
with your new dog is to have him sleep in
your bedroom, the central source of the
owners' scents. It is suggested you intro-
duce the dog to the idea by pretending to
take a nap the first afternoon. We pretend.
T. paced the bedroom for a while, going
from Tom's side and then back to Irene's,
hoping to find a chink in the new owners'
armor and get to jump on the bed. (It in
NOT recommended the dog sleep in your
bed, only in your bedroom, on his own bed)
We lay there pretending to nap, one eye and
one ear open the whole time. Finally T.
plops down on the floor (no doggie bed in
the room yet). Not sure if the dog is pre-
tending. We feel the way we
imagine new parents must
feel, alert to every possible
sight/sound/hint of a prob-
lem. There will be little rest
for us on our first day of
doggie ownership.
2:00 pm
Upon arising from faux-nap,
T. gets a good look through
the sliding door to the porch.
Squirrels! He bolted for the
door, jumps up on it, and
promptly breaks the wooden
grillwork. He seems embar-
rassed by what he has done.
(Darn, I had thought to remove that before
he came but then forgot.) With the window
now completely clear, he stands at attention
and stares at whatever squirrels and birds
arrive at the porch bird feeder. Cheap en-
tertainment. He does not move from watch-
ing for a full 20 minutes.
4:30 pm
T. seems very familiar with beds and
couches. When called, he bounds across
the room and jumps on the couch. Read all
the dog books and though the bed is
frowned upon, the furniture has no consen-
sus. We planned on firm "no's" to both, but
a warm, loving dog, sitting next to you on
the sofa with his head in your lap can
quickly make the toughest owners compro-
mise. For now, we're tough, and push him
to the floor, but in our heart of hearts we
know the future will be a challenge.
6:00 pm
It's evening and time for his dinner and
medication (T. has 2 weeks of meds for an
ear infection).
7:00 pm
How long do the new owners wait before
walking the dog? 1/2 hour? 1 hour? More?
Sure he's housebroken. But how will he let
us know if we miss-timed his walk and now
he has to go out? We take him out 1/2 hour
after dinner and again at 1 hour. No pooping.
Hmmmm.
9:30 pm
"Bedtime for Bonzo". We've put a doggie
bed-pillow at the foot of the bed for him to
sleep in and bond with us. Close the bed-
room door? Leave it open and risk him
wandering the house getting into unimag-
inable trouble? We decide to close it. We're
under the covers and the light goes out. T.
promptly jumps onto the bed between the
two of us. This will never do! Plus, he
smells like a dog (no surprise there). Tom
puts him down on the floor, to which he re-
luctantly agrees. He goes to each side of
the bed, as he did at nap-time, hoping for
someone to give in. We do not. We are
proud of ourselves. He circles the room two
or three times, then settles down on the dog
bed and makes funny lip smacking noises
before nodding off. We have lain there in
the dark the entire time, trying to know
what was going on in the pitch dark by
sounds only.
12:30 am
Talon is awake and moving about. Is this
the sign we'd been looking for that he has to
go out and poop. Kind of late, no? Tom is
taking no chances. He gets dressed and
takes T. out for a walk. No pooping. He
returns and everyone goes back to sleep
until morning. Anxious pet owner, Tom
sleeps in his clothes
Post Script:
Tom keeps the shelter updated on Talon's
life with plenty of photos, and chronicles.
We're happy to report that Talon eats and
poops on a wonderfully reliable schedule,
has met the Fed Ex man and car mechanic
with friendly tail wagging, enjoys car rides,
and is very happy to be allowed on the
couch. We think this is going to work out.

A Glimpse at the
"First Dog"
Experience
T
he Sonsini Shelter has some great volunteers. One of
them is Tom Burkhard. He volunteers several days a
week at the shelter walking and caring for dogs. Though he
is an over-60 dog-lover, he's never owned a dog. He's learn-
ing a lot from his volunteer experience and he's gotten to
know a beautiful dog named Talon who came to the shelter
in December. Talon isn't the easiest dog; he's got some
behavioral issues that the shelter is working on with the help
of Certified Dog Behavior Consultant Leea Foran. Tom and
his wife Irene made a decision to foster Talon, and if things
work out, they plan to adopt him. They call it "rent with an
option to buy". Armed with advice from Leea and having
poured over countless books on dog behavior, Tom and Irene
readied their home for a dog. On Sunday, March 24, they
took him home. Anxious to get dog-owning right, Tom kept
close account of Talon's first day at home.
Here's their story:
I will give attentive loving care to your pet,
giving you peace of mind during your time away.

A
t the Sonsini Animal Shelter, there's
nothing that pulls at the heart
strings more than seeing a senior home-
less dog or cat there. Sometimes, it's an
older stray dog whose owner isn't look-
ing for them. Often, it's the aged pet of
an older person who didn't make a plan
for their animal when they passed away.
Most of these dogs and cats had people
who had cared for them at some time in their lives, and
they seem bewildered and extra vulnerable as they
gaze at you from behind their kennel doors.
Though a shelter isn't any place a senior pet would
want to be, they are not without friends at the Sonsini
Shelter. There are lots of volunteers who make it a
point to give a little extra love to the older animals.
Such is the case with Nancy O'Malley, a Sunday vol-
unteer. She and Martha Pope, volunteer photographer
extraordinaire for the shelter, have made it their mis-
sion to help these animals find homes where they can
live out their lives. Their partnership began when
Nancy adopted Danny Boy, an adorable senior pug,
who came to the shelter as a stray. She decided to use
her experience to inspire others to adopt senior pets.
She wrote the story of Danny Boy, Martha took pho-
tos of him and of other Sonsini senior animals, and
they created a book. The proceeds of this book will be
used to fund extra medical care that some senior shel-
ter animals need to get ready for a new home.
" Our goal is to bring attention to senior dogs and cats
in shelters," says Martha. "Sometimes they get over-
looked, but my experience with older pets has been
positive and heart-warming. They're so easy-going and
enjoyable to be around.
Throughout her pet-owning life, Nancy has made it a
point to adopt senior dogs. "It's not just an act of char-
ity," Nancy explains. "I learn so much from them.
Danny Boy is an old guy. He can't see well, he can't
hear well, and his joints ache. But every day, he is
happy, feisty, and he enjoys life. He loves exploring,
and he's an avid flower-sniffer. I know it sounds like a
clich, but watching him live every moment so joy-
fully, in spite of his problems, has helped me appreci-
ate what a gift my own life is."
If you're looking for a new best friend, consider
adopting an older pet from a shelter. They will be for-
ever grateful for your kindness, but you might also get
so much more than you can imagine from the experience
.
"The Chronicles of Danny Boy" is available at
the Sonsini Shelter, Berkshire Humane Society,
Allen Heights Veterinary Hospital, South Street
Veterinary Services, and Dunkin Doggies in
Pittsfield. Nancy and Martha can be reached at

and book requests can be mailed to the

I
ndoors cats may miss the treat of
being outside, but there is a way to
let them have their cake without their
eating it, too: Hang a bird feeder out-
side a sunny, screened window, high
enough off the ground to deter other
predators. The birds will benefit from
having a safe place to enjoy a meal, and
your cats will have an entertaining,
ever-changing view without harming
their feathered foes.
Such is one delight for the feline resi-
dents at Purradise, where several well-
stocked feeders hang outside the
windows. When I stopped by on April
26, a variety of birds was actively feed-
ing outside the Sunshine Spa, quite un-
concerned that a pair of kitties was
observing them closely from the other
side of the glass.
A bit of stalking was going on inside
the room, too, apart from anything to
do with birds. Two-year-old female
Patches, nearly all white with a black
skullcap, tail, and solitary patch on one
flank, was testing her territorial limits
with 10-month-old Mister P, a very
large, laid-back black male sporting
just a whiff of white on his chest. Every
so often, Patches approached Mister P
and hissed at him, without his having
done anything other than simply being
there. This gentle giant didnt have the
slighted interest in arguing...he merely
lay down very slowly, in place. And
each time her chal-
lenge met no re-
sponse, Patches
withdrew.
In between these
one-sided confronta-
tions, each of them
sat separately on my
lap for a spell, as well
as watched the birds
at a particularly ac-
tive feeder. Staffers
Tracy and Danielle,
who were also keep-
ing tabs on the social
climate in the room,
discussed leaving the
pair together for at
least the rest of the
day, or perhaps even
overnight, as clearly
whatever social jock-
eying was going on in
there between them
was winding down,
Mister P closing the space gradually be-
tween himself and Patches, and she
bearing his presence for longer and
longer periods without threatening him.
By the time I left, the two were com-
panionably stretched along the same
bank of windows, he on a cat perch for-
merly occupied by Patches, and she on
the sill within a foot of him. The only
sound was that of the birds chirping
outside, unaware
of the dynamics
just on the other
side of the glass.
With a bit of
luck, learning to
share a fun view
while also occu-
pying the same
space may lead
to these two cats
striking up a
friendship; in
just that after-
noon, left to
work things out
on their own,
they had reached
the level of a
cautious cordial-
ity. And encour-
aging feline
friendship is a
good thing, as
aside from being
as faithful as they can to placing sib-
lings or established pairs together, and
hoping that potential adoptees will get
along individually with new animals in
a household, Purradise staffers are sen-
sitive to the new relationships that
strike up between cats who only just
meet at the shelter. Ideally, this posi-
tive-and-negative black-and-white cou-
ple may move on to a home where they
may benignly coexist as a permanent
team...and as courteously, with what-
ever beautiful creatures they view out-
side, ever beyond their grasp.
This series follows the special human-
feline bond at Purradise, the Berkshire
Humane Society Cat Adoption Center
at 301 Stockbridge Road, Great Bar-
rington, MA 01230 (413-717-4244).

I arrived at Animal D.R.E.A.M.S.
around 9:15 on a Thursday morning.
From there, I drove with two others to
a few streets that are part of our new
trapping project. The plan was to put
informative flyers about Trap-Neuter-
Return into the door of every house and
apartment on each street of this targeted
area in West Pittsfield. We parked at the
top of the street and I walked down the
right side, sticking a flyer into the crack
of every door I could find. It was cold.
I made the irresponsible decision not to
wear gloves. The sidewalks, as well as
the walkway and steps leading to each
front door were icy and often uninvit-
ing. After only an hour, I couldnt wait
to hop into the car and return to the
warmth of the office on North Street.
And thats when I saw him. He was
sitting nonchalantly in the driveway of
a house we had given a flyer to earlier.
I crept by the house ever so quietly in
order to achieve closer contact with this
black and white cat that was getting
ready to flee at the mere sound of my
soft footsteps. When I reached the bot-
tom of the driveway, he immediately
bolted behind the house, and I knew
that in a matter of minutes, he would be
far away from me. As I walked back to
the car, I hoped that he was a housecat,
running back to the safety of his family
and his home. I hoped he was headed
towards a warm house in which he
would settle down on the couch for a
nap, later to wake up to food and water
dishes awaiting him, and perhaps a nice
selection of toys to choose from. But
deep down, I knew that wasnt the case.
Maybe I was leaving the frigid winter
weather behind me, but that wasnt an
option for that cat, along with hundreds
of others. They couldnt leave.
Animal D.R.E.A.M.S. is currently
aiming to trap two hundred abandoned
or feral cats for spay or neuter and vac-
cinations, in a three month period. Two
hundred free-roaming cats! Before An-
imal D.R.E.A.M.S. was awarded the
grant in order to start our major trap-
ping project, I wasnt aware that there
are so many feral cats in Berkshire
County! I had never seen even one out-
side with my own eyes, and Ive lived
here for all eighteen years of my life. I
tried to picture that many cats outside,
abandoned by their owners and now
living cold, invisible lives to so many
humans all around them. I simply
couldnt wrap my head around it,
whether it was because I was, at the
time, completely unaware of the exis-
tence of many neighborhoods in my
hometown of Pittsfield, or the fact that
the animal lover within me didnt want
it to be true. I knew I had to see it to be-
lieve it, and just seeing that one cat sit-
ting in the driveway was enough for me
to believe there are so many more.
Since then, we have trapped several
dozen feral cats, and counting. I have
helped to transport some of these to the
vet to be spayed or neutered. Every cat
deserves a home, but I now know that
for thousands of cats in the Berkshires,
home is on the streets, in the wild. As
for my black and white friend, I hope
he is able to find shelter from the harsh
Berkshire elements, and find food to fill
his belly. As long as cats like him are
out there, I feel that we, as humans,
have the moral obligation to take care
of them. And that is exactly what Ani-
mal DREAMS and this massive trap-
ping project aims to do.
Devin Melle has been an intern at An-
imal DREAMS Feline Rescue as part
of the Horizons program at Miss Halls
school. She will graduate in June.

Looking New!
Lynn Wallace
How do I keep
my new furniture
looking new in
my pet friendly home?
When purchasing new furni-
ture, there is always an antic-
ipation of keeping it like new
as long as possible. It is
tempting to say, This time I
wont let Fido on the sofa. Or No
more Kitty sleeping in bed with this
new mattress! When reality sets in,
Fido is on the sofa and Kitty is snug-
gled up in bed with you. As a pet par-
ent, you will find that there are
additional steps to take to extend the
life of your furniture. In addition to
the obvious upkeep, like vacuuming
upholstery, there are many products
that can help your new furniture stay
new longer. Just as the old adage
says, an ounce of prevention is worth
more than a pound of cure. Even if
we dont allow our furry friends on
the sofa, in our bed and on top of the
dining room table, respectfully, there
will be times that these rules dont
apply. I certainly dont allow my cat
to practice his long jump technique
from the kitchen counter to the dining
room table, but from the scratches on
my table top, Im fairly certain that it
happens when Im not home!
For your new upholstery (sofa,
loveseat, recliner, etc.): Inquire at the
time of purchase if there are additional
warranties or treatments to protect your
fabric or leather. Here at Simmons Fur-
niture, we offer a warranty for fabric
and leather at a modest additional
charge. These types of warranties
cover wide ranges of accidental spills,
tears, burns and bodily fluids. These
treatments will also make accidents
easier to clean. While many wont
cover pet damage, like a bite mark, it
does cover an array of stains caused by
pet bodily fluids and offers service for
cleaning those types of accidents.
For your new wood furniture (dining
table, server, coffee tables, etc.): Con-
sider purchasing a custom fit table pad.
Table pads work for any type of table,
with or without leaves. Besides being
very protective, they are available in
many faux wood and leather finishes
making them quite fashionable too.
Most importantly, they will protect
your table from an Olympic Cat Table
Jumping event, extreme heat from
serving dishes and rings from sweaty
glasses.
For your new mattress: Get a brand
new, waterproof mattress pad. Water-
proof does not mean the rubber sheet
that made a crinkly sound when you
move from the old days. Mattress pads
now have very technologically ad-
vanced fabrics and fibers that will help
you sleep cooler, drier and will protect
the mattress in the event that your pets
get sick or has an accident on your bed.
It can also create a barrier from pet dan-
der and fur, too! Pair a mattress pad
with new pillows that resist mildew and
mold and complete the thought with a
pillow protector. This will help you
sleep better and keep pet fur from
imbedding into your new sleep set.
In addition to these products, regular
brushing, bathing and clipping your
furry friends nails can reduce over all
wear and tear. Regular bathing can re-
duce oils, dirt, fur, dander and odors
from clinging to your new furniture.
Regularly vacuuming your upholstery
can also maintain your new furniture
too. Now that you are equipped with
the right tools and knowledge, purchase
without fear! Snuggle, dont struggle!

W
hile visitors to Berkshire Hu-
mane Society (BHS) have come
to expect a large selection of cats and
dogs available for adoption, many are
still surprised to find other types of an-
imals also waiting for their new forever
homes exotic pets.
Exotic pets, which include small mam-
mals such as rabbits, gerbils, and ham-
sters as well as birds, reptiles, and
amphibians, have clearly found a place
in the hearts and homes of American
families. According to a 2012 survey
by the American Veterinary Medical
Association, 3.2 million rabbits and 3
million hamsters, gerbils, and guinea
pigs live in American households.
Birds also have a strong presence 4.4
million as well as snakes, lizards, and
turtles 4.6 million. Given these num-
bers, its a sad reality that some exotic
pets just like dogs and cats also end
up in shelters and rescues across the
country.
While the Exotics Room at Berkshire
Humane Society currently houses three
rabbits, four hamsters, and two mice,
other residents in the past year have in-
cluded a pair of ferrets, lots of guinea
pigs, a few gerbils, rats, and birds - a
Blue and Gold McCaw, a Green-
chested Amazon Parrot, and a 10
month old cockatiel named Ralphie.
Although BHS sometime does get calls
about turtles, snakes, and lizards, the fa-
cility is not equipped to meet their spe-
cial needs, so staff work with their
owners until they can find a new home
or places them in reptile or amphibian
rescues.
Erin Starsja, Feline and Small Mam-
mal Services Supervisor at BHS, ex-
plains, After dogs and cats, rabbits are
the third most common pet to be sur-
rendered to shelters with guinea pigs
probably being the fourth. As to why,
she cites a number of reasons. Often
these are impulse purchases, but then
people realize how much work the ani-
mals require. Most pet stores wont
take them back, so they end up here.
Furthermore, parents frequently buy a
rabbit, hamster, or gerbil for their chil-
dren, who often lose interest when the
new pet isnt as social or playful as they
expected. A lot of these small animals
dont like to be handled, Erin says,
and some of them arent that easy to
care for.
Rabbits, for example, are mistakenly
thought to be one of these easy keep-
ers. Yet, nothing can be further from
the truth. Rabbits can live to be 10
years old. Besides having special di-
etary needs, they require plenty of ex-
ercise and socialization. Because they
have hollow bones, theyre prone to
back and other injuries and become eas-
ily frightened when picked up or re-
strained. Theyre also meticulous
animals who like clean litter boxes and
need yearly visits to the veterinarian, at
the very least.
On the other hand, although beautiful
and appealing, some birds, such as par-
rots and even cockatiels, arent for
everyone. Ralphie was purchased from
a pet store as a Christmas present for an
elderly woman. But the high level of
care that he required as well as his bois-
terous nature proved too much for her.
By February, he was brought to BHS to
be rehomed. For those who love birds
and want to share their homes with
these feathered companions, Erin sug-
gests something less demanding, such
as parakeets, finches, or domestic
doves.
Although some pet stores still sell rab-
bits and other types of exotics, adoption
is a better alternative for many reasons.
First, of course, is the satisfaction of
providing a surrendered animal a new
home. Second, staff at BHS are quite
knowledgeable about the care of exotic
animals and more than willing to share
their expertise with adopters. Third,
staff are also familiar with each ani-
mals temperament and can advice on
whether he/she will be a good fit for the
family. And then theres the cost
adoption is a great deal! At BHS, for
example, the fee for a rabbit is $75.00,
which includes spaying or neutering
and micro-chipping, or $50 for a ferret,
which includes all vaccinations.
When deciding which exotic pet best
fits into your family and lifestyle, Erin
strongly advises doing some research
on the care requirements, life span, and
the interaction level of the animal.
Also, she says, remember that all ani-
mals have their own personalities, no
matter how small or large they are. For
example, all breeds of hamsters are ac-
tive, but some are more social than oth-
ers; Teddy Bears are easy to handle and
better suited for children while
Roborovskis are not because they are
small and quite agile.
Mary A. Koncel is the
Humane Educator
at Berkshire Humane Society.

was abandoned at Second Chance. Gypsy is
friendly, mellow, and gentle. Since she was just left

children. We are unsure about how she will be

a sweet, mature gentleman with plenty of pep in his step,
who came to Second Chance with his pal Annie. They
were both rescued during Hurricane Sandy and later
brought here to find their forever homes. As you can see
from his picture, Scooter loves his tennis balls but also
enjoys his down time to snuggle. Scooter would do well
in a home with other dogs, cats, and children 10 years
and older. If you are interested in more information about
