Class Time: MW 11:45-1:40 p.m. Instructor: Larry Beardsley Office Hours: MW 11:15-11:45 and 3:15-3:45 MW Office Location: PHY 04A E-mail: beardsleyl@usf.edu Information: All relevant information will be given in class or on blackboard Text: Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals by Stewart Prerequisites: C (2.0) or better in MAC 2282, or C (2.0) or better in MAC 2312. Course Description: Successful completion of the course merits 4 semester hours of credit. Foundations of Knowledge & Learning: This course is part of the University of South Floridas Foundations of Knowledge and Learning (FKL) Core Curriculum. It is certified for Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning and will meet the following four dimensions: Critical Thinking, Inquiry-based Learning, Scientific Processes, and Quantitative Literacy. Contingency Course Plan: In the event of an emergency, it may be necessary for USF to suspend normal operations. During this time, USF may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include but are not limited to: Blackboard, Elluminate, Skype, and e-mail messaging and/or alternate scheduling. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor the main USF website, e-mails and MoBull messages for important information. Course Content: Chapter 9: Parametric Equations and Polar Coordinates (9.5 omit) Chapter 10: Vectors and the Geometry of Space (10.9 Optional) Chapter 11 : Partial Derivatives Chapter 12: Multiple Integrals (12.6-12.8 optional) Chapter 13: Vector Calculus (13.4-13.9 optional) Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is recommended and office hours are not intended to make up for poor class attendance. Attendance will not be counted against a students grade except that there is a high correlation between poor attendance and poor grades.

Homework: Homework will be assigned from text, but it will not be collected. There will be three homework assignments for turn in that will be similar to h.w. in text. Test questions will be similar to assigned homework problems (from text and from turn-in h.w.) Test and Exam Schedule: Test 1: September 26, 2012 Test 2: October 24, 2012 Test 3: November 28, 2012 Make-up: One test may be made up on December 3, 2012. Final Exam: December 12, 2012: 12:30-2:30 p.m. Grading Policy: Each test is worth 20 percent of the grade; H.W. for turn in is 10% of grade. The final exam is worth 30 percent of the final grade. The following scale will be used to convert the Course Grade to a Letter Grade: 97-100 = A+, 94-96 = A, 90-93 = A- (Similarly, for grades B+,B, B- etc.) Make-up Test: On the make-up day, a test for which you were absent may be made up. Academic Dishonesty: Instances of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, forgery, complicity and computer misuse will not be tolerated. (Undergraduate rules apply to non-degree-seeking students.) It may be awarded to an undergraduate student only when a small portion of the students work is incomplete and only when the student is earning a grade of C or better. Student Disability Policy: Any student with a disability is encouraged to meet privately with the instructor during the first week of classes to discuss accommodations. The student must bring a current Memorandum of Accommodations from the Office of Student Disability Services (SVC 1133). This is a prerequisite for receiving accommodations. Exam accommodations through SDS usually require 5 (five business days advance notice. Note: If you need extra time on exams, you must make arrangements to take your exams with the SDS office.
