ARI 550 / 590

WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT ISNT an OEM perspective

Rick Heiden Trane Senior Engineer, Compressors

ARI 550/590 What it is

Performance rating standard self-regulated through collaboration of AHRI, ASHRAE, participating manufacturers and third party technical test loop auditors
Means of maintaining a level playing field for certified performance ratings that customers and competitors can rely on

ARI 550/590 CERTIFICATION What its not

Not a guarantee of perfect performance
Instrument inaccuracy and machine variation are real Refer to ASHRAE Guideline 2 and 22 for examples of measurement uncertainty

Not a guarantee of field performance

Benchmarking machine performance at commissioning is an important step

Installation details can significantly influence performance i.e. piping, operating condition variation, etc.

ARI 550/590 What it is

Performance rating standard
Rated parameter definition Method of Test per ASHRAE Standard 30 including measurement accuracy requirements Standard operating conditions Allowable Test Tolerances

Certification Program

Performance rating data (catalog or program) certified by test audits

30% of model category are tested each year, models are typically classified by compressor type and size

FACTORY or LABORATORY test loop audit and approval for use for certified performance testing

ARI 550/590 What it is

Performance Ratings
Capacity Energy efficiency Water pressure drop Full & Part Load Values Integrated Part Load Value Non-standard Part Load Value

TEST LOOP APPROVAL What it is

Approval of test loop for use in certification performance testing Test loop is audited by a third party for approval Audit process includes:
Auditor installed redundant temperature and power measurements and data acquisition system Review of NIST traceable calibrations Verification of heat balance Verification of selected model unit performance
4 points, IPLV and surprise 5th point

TEST LOOP AUDIT What it is

Measurements

PERFORMANCE TESTING What it is

30% of model category tested per year
For example 15 model categories 5 tests per year Must not overlap categories year over year so in practice entire model line is tested every 3 years ARI ultimately selects units to be tested

Performance data is verified to match certified data

100, 75, 50, 25% load point selections and IPLV calculation made ahead of time using manufacturers selection software or catalog data (ARI maintains current revisions) Performance data submitted by manufacturer is verified to match certified data Test day arrives along with a surprise 5th point Water temperature offsets made to maintain compressor lift accounting for clean tube tests with no fouling STEADY STATE tests are conducted per test method

Audit testing

Performance data is compiled and compared against selection data and allowable tolerances for approval

PERFORMANCE TESTING What it is

Water cooled offsets for field tube fouling

ARI 550/590 What it is, recap

Performance rating standard coupled with an industry-regulated Certification Program audited by an independent third party

Means of maintaining a level playing field for certified performance ratings that customers and competitors can rely on
There are many approved test loops in industry providing an excellent means of benchmarking machine performance at high accuracy and reasonable cost
