Warren 3 Winston Churchill once said that If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. (Winston Churchill Quotes par. 24). This quote gives quite a bit of insight into the values and character of the man often remembered by his smoldering cigar and witty quotes. Churchill, the Prime Minister of Britain during World War II, had a profound impact on his subjects. He inspired them to fight another day when all was lost, giving speeches such as this influential one, We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. (Binns 65). Winston Churchill influenced his nation during the 1930s through determination and hard work, despite many demoralizing and destructive setbacks. Although Winston Churchill was born into wealth, he was most certainly not born great. Churchill First opened his eyes in one of the many rooms of a vast mansion, however, Neither of Winstons busy parents spent much time with their baby son (Ashworth 1, 2). Churchills parents paid little attention to their son, and his father had even thought Churchill would turn out a failure. Hoping to change his fathers sullen views, Churchill enlisted in the military. Winston quickly emerged a hero when he *helped+ to rescue a British train ambushed by Boer guerrillas *he+ was taken prisoner and locked up in a school (Ashworth 12). After his military service, Churchill then began to ascend to power in politics, eventually he was appointed the First Lord of Admiralty and was placed in charge of the entire Royal Navy (Winston Churchill par. 24). Continuing on his rise to power, Churchill was eventually appointed Prime Minister of Great Britain during the first year of World War II. Winston Churchill was not born into greatness, but he managed to achieve it, becoming one of the most powerful men in the United Kingdom and in the world.

Warren 4 Part of what allowed Churchill to rise to power in the military and of the government was his futuristic thinking and his unfaltering ideals. Churchill always identified a threat or ally before anyone else. He realized that Britain needed the United States as its ally in World War II and he was one of the first to grasp the military potential of aircraft (Winston Churchill par. 14). Churchill was right on both accounts, without the United States, World War II probably would have been won by the Axis and biplanes proved to be an enormous advantage in World War I. Churchill also never let someone else trample on his own views. He stood true to his views on appeasement and the rise of Nazi Germany. However, the majority of the population was for appeasement and against rearmament, so Churchills warnings about the rise of Nazi Germany and the need for British rearmament were ignored (More Information About: Winston Churchill par. 3) Again, Churchills intuition and logic were correct, Britain wound up in a war with Germany and lost a few allies along the way because Britain had appeased Germany. Because Churchill thought ahead and stood up for his ideals despite public opinion, he was successful in both the military and politics. Had Churchill not been able to think ahead and be firm in his beliefs, many of his contributions to his nation and the world would be lost and our society would most likely be much different than it is now. Churchill enlist*ed+ the United States as Britains ally during World War II (Winston Churchill par. 27). Had Churchill not convinced the United States to join in the fight, World War II would most likely have been lost, and had Churchill not kept the spirits of his people up and encouraged them to continue fighting, the United States might not have been able to join the fight before Britain was taken by the Nazis. Also, as soon as World War II began, Churchill was appointed First Lord of Admiralty (Winston Churchill par. 24). This shows how much trust his superiors had in Churchill, as he jumped from what are called his Wilderness Years or time away from power, to the head of the Royal Navy. Finally, Churchill was given a State Funeral when he passed the first given to a commoner since the Duke of Wellingtons death more than a century earlier (Winston Churchill Biography par. 16).

Warren 5 Churchill was such an influential and inspiring prime minister that he was given a State funeral, normally given only to royalty and not lowly prime ministers. Churchill influenced our current society in unimaginable ways through determination and idealism. Winston Churchill built a strong relationship with his family and with his nation and also indulged in several hobbies in order to maintain his health and help him to impact his country in better ways. Churchills Wife, Clementine supported, advised, and challenged Winston throughout his career (Winston Churchill Biography par. 1). Churchill accepted his Wifes input and encouraged her to challenge his decisions so that he could see both sides of the issue. Churchill also told the people directly how bad the situation was, but then went on to tell them how he thought it would work out for the best in the end, which gained him respect and trust from the people of England (Binns 64). This set him apart from other leaders, who twisted the truth to boost morale in their nation. Churchill also enjoyed gardening and polo. At a farm Churchill bought for his family and himself to reside in, Churchill landscaped and planted gardens and orchards and he played polo frequently, as his days in the cavalry made Churchill a championship caliber Polo player (Winston Churchill Biography par. 8). Winston Churchill built strong relationships with his family and citizens and found time through all his busy work to enjoy hobbies. Winston Churchill was a great man who helped his nation through hard times, although he often faced hard times himself. Churchill led his country through both World Wars with diligence and strength, and still managed to keep a strong relationship with his family. He stayed true to his beliefs, even though they were often unorthodox and at the time, often thought of as frivolous. Even after Churchill fell out of power, he still advocated his beliefs, mainly on communism and the Iron Curtain. Churchill was the glue that held his nation together during times of uncertainty and fear.
