ST ALOYSIUS GONZAGA
(1568 -1591)

Your model in this school is St Aloysius Gonzaga after whom the

School is named. This 16th century prince, heir to the throne of the
Marquisate of Gonzaga in Italy had at his disposal everything he could
have desired in life. But inspired by a deep spirit of faith and moved
by a deep love for his fellowmen, at the age of 18 he abdicated
his rights and entered the Jesuit Order, founded by Ignatius of Loyola,
to be a religious whose wealth would be God alone and whose
happiness would be the service of others. While Aloysius was still
in training there was a plague in Rome. Victims of the plague had
no hopes of recovery and were being abandoned everywhere for
fear of contagi on. The youthful Aloysius who was then 24 rose up
to the occasion with his companions and immediately set about
caring for the sick and the dying, risking his own life. The risk,
however, was too great, Aloysius became a victim of the disease and
died in the midst of his noble work, offering his life as a sacrifice
for others.
It is example of his life, pure and noble, not seeking the glories
of this world but genuinely concerned about the good of others that is proposed to you as a model here.

The School Crest

To keep before you always the aims of education in this School

and the heights to which you must aspire, you have the Crest and
Motto of this Institution.
In the right half of the shield-like Crest you have three soaring
eagles reminding you not to be satisfied with mediocrity but aim
truly high in intellectual, physical and spiritual development; you
have also a jumping lion symbolic of the vigour and boldness you
must cultivate.
To the left half of the Crest you have the sun shining over the
Coast. Every student who passes through the portals of this Institution
must be like the sun, illumining the contributing to the growth of
the people of the land.
You find in the centre of the rising sun the letters IHS. This is
the abbreviation of the name of Jesus (which in Greek is written
as IHSUS). That name is symbolic of the deepest faith in God and
deepest commitment to humanity and readiness to sacrifice
everything, even one's life for others.
The Aloysian Ideal
St Aloysius College Higher Primary School run by the Society of
Jesus, has legacy of a hundred and twenty nine years of service to
the cause of education. Thousands of students have passed through
her portals and now are serving the country in different capacities.
The school welcomes you too, who have joined this large family to
be educated here. It offers various facilities and you are invited to
make use of them so that in turn you can make proper use of the
many talents God has given you and thus prepare yourself as a full
fledged person to serve God and mankind.
8

St Aloysius College Higher Primary School is a minority-run

institution intended primarily for Catholic students. However the
school also accepts others without making any distinction. In our
admission policy we preferentially opt for the poor.
The School Motto
The Motto of this Institution is Lucet et Ardet. These Latin
words which mean Shine to Enkindle refer to the mind and heart.
It is the deep desire of this Alma Mater to present to the world
and to our nation person's with minds bright with knowledge and
creativity and hearts burning with genuine love and concern for
others.
May your life measure up to the expectation of this Motto.
Our Vision
Empowering youth through excellence in education to shape a
better future for humankind.
Our Mission
St Aloysius Institutions of the Mangalore Jesuit Educational
Society, inspired by Jesus Christ and guided by the motto Lucet
et Ardet, commit themselves to impart integral education, to
spread the light of knowledge and wisdom, to kindle the ardor of
faith that does justice, to form men and women for others who
are: academically accomplished, emotionally balanced, morally
upright, socially responsible, ecologically sensitive, professionally
dedicated for the transformation of the society.
Aims and Objectives of the School
The School aims at forming totally integrated persons with
i)

Genuine human and spiritual values.

ii)

A genuine concern for the welfare of others.

iii) A commitment to truth and justice

iv) To strive for academic excellence.
9

1.

To face life today, text-book knowledge alone is insufficient.

Hence the school provides a large library and a reading room.
You are expected to make the best use of these by personal
work, study and reflection.

2.

The School has extensive playgrounds for different games. You

are invited to acquire some skill at least in one of the games.

3.

A truly educated person should reveal all the human values. For
this realisation the Jesuit Fathers have been giving great
importance to moral and spiritual education. Hence you are
expected not to treat moral science as one of the many subjects
but one which will help to build your total personality.

4.

Initiative and leadership comes only when you broaden the

horizon of your vision and the many co-curricular activities that
we provide through the various clubs will help you to become
a leader, a creative and independent thinker.

5.

The Indian ethos lays great stress on respect and reverence to

a teacher who is instrumental in moulding your personality.
Hence respect for all teachers present and past who have helped
you in this process is duty-bound homage to them.

sufficient reasons for the temporary or permanent dismissal of
a pupil. Other offences such as coming late to class, damaging
school property etc., are punishable.

10. The School does not hold itself responsible for the conduct of
the boys outside its premises. Injustice to itself, however, it takes
cognizance of any serious misconduct of its pupils committed
outside its precincts and should any serious charge be fairly

18. When prayers are said at the beginning and at the end of class,
all must stand and pray respectfully.

should enclose reply postage with a self addressed envelope.

TO PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

1.

2.

3.

Parents and Guardians are expected to co-operate with the

school Authorities by enforcing discipline and regularity at home.
In order that lesson may be duly prepared, pupils should devote
sufficient time to private study. On holidays more time should
be devoted to study at home.
If parents do not insist on regular attendance and home study,
the results are sure to be disappointing to them.
Parents and Guardians are recommended to call to the
Correspondent's Office atleast once each term to ascertain from
the school Authorities what has been the conduct and progress
of pupil under their charge. This may be done between 9 a.m.
and 10.30 a.m.
Parents are recommended to contact the teachers between
3.15 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. on all working days, to ascertain the
progress and conduct of the pupils.
Parents and Guardians are not allowed to enter any of the
14

4.
5.

6.

7.

8.

classrooms during the class hours without the Correspondent's

or Headmistress' permission.
Parents must see the Progress Records of their children and help
them to rectify their defects as regards study or conduct.
Private tuitions are very much discouraged because of their
adverse effects, but if absolutely necessary they should be
arranged only through the Headmistress.
Parents and Guardians are 'ipso facto' members of the Parent
-Teacher Association of the School which aims at fostering closer
relationship, mutual understanding and co-operation between
home and school. They are strongly urged to attend Parent Teacher meetings, Sports Day, School Day, General Body Meeting
and other functions in the School.
Tests and exams are compulsory. If due to illness one cannot
attend, it must be reported to the Headmistress / Correspondent
immediately. Students who are caught copying in the tests/
examinations will be issued TC at the end of the year.
A boy failing twice in the same class loses his seat in the school.

With the willing co-operation of parents and guardians, the

School Authorities hope to mould the child into a good and God
fearing citizen of Mother India.

PRAYERS AND HYMNS

OUR FATHER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy
Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY

Where the mind is without fear and the head is head high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into
fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into
the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever
widening thought and action;
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my Country awake.
TAGORE

26

MAKE GOD YOUR GURU

Make God your Guru
Let Him tell you what to do
Listen, His calling clear and true
Take time to listen
Take courage to obey
The inner voice is calling, calling you
1. There are voices all around me,
My enemies and my friends.
Do this, don't do that, the chorus never ends,
But I will always listen to.
That quiet inner voice,
It is swift and definite and I have made my choice.

IT TAKES COURAGE
It
It
It
It

takes
takes
takes
takes

courage
courage
courage
courage

to
to
to
to

answer a call
give your all
risk your name
be true.

1. It takes courage to share, what no other will dare

To be standing alone, one whom no one will own,
To be ready to stake, for another one's sake
It takes courage to be true.

IN HIS TIME
In His time (2)
He makes all things beautiful in His time
Lord, please show me everyday
As you're teaching me your way
That to do just what you say in your time.
1.

In your time (2)

You make all things beautiful in your time
Lord, my life to you I bring
With its winter and its spring
May I fathom everything in your time.
27

Your ways Lord are loving and kind
With those who are true to your law.

ONCE UPON ETERNITY

Once upon Eternity
God fell in love with me
He loves me, now and forever
And he wants me to love him too.
Ch. We must return Gods love to him
We must show him, we really love
By loving our brother in by loving God
By speaking to Him through prayer.
1. In this World we live in today
One's interests are so broad
But you haven't lived you haven't loved
Till you fall in love with God.
28

LORD OF REALITY
Lord of reality, make me dear
Show me your mighty works
Great power to feel
Impart your love to me
That I may be a person of reality
Ch. Lord God Almighty, take my hand
Guide me on, let me stand
Strong and mighty against the foe
Thy love in command.
1.

1.

Teach me thy will O Lord

JUST LIKE A CHILD

Just
And
Just
And
Ch: Here
Here
Here
Here

like a child who trusts his father dear

who delights to feel his presence near
like a child whose mind has not a doubt
whose heart is never proud
I
I
I
I

come, O Lord
come just like a child
come, O Lord
come just like a child

LIKE A SUNFLOWER
Like a sunflower that follows
Every movement of the sun
So I turn towards you
To follow you my God
1. In simplicity charity I follow (2)
2. In simplicity honesty I follow (2)

I HAVE COME TO THEE

Ref.:I have come to Thee to take Thy touch
Before I begin my day
1 . Let Thy eyes rest upon my eyes for a while
2.

Let me take to my work the assurance

of Thy comradeship, my friend

3.

Fill my mind with thy music,

to last thro' the desert of noise

4.

Let Thy love's sunshine

Kiss the peaks of my thoughts and linger
in my life's valley, where the harvest ripens

THIS IS MY PRAYER
Ch: This is my prayer to thee my Lord
Strike, Strike at the root of penury in my heart.
1. Give me the strength lightly to bear
my joys and sorrows
2. Give me the strength to make
my love fruitful in service
35

JUST KEEP TRUSTING

I just Keep trusting my Lord
As I walk along
I just keep trusting my Lord
and he gives me a song
Tho' the storm clouds
darken the Sky
O'er the heavenly trail
I just keep trusting my Lord
He will never fail
He is a faithful friend (2)
Such a faithful friend (2)
I can count on him (2)
To the very end (2)

THIS LITTLE GUIDING LIGHT

This little guiding light of mine
(3)
I am going to let it shine
Let it shine all the time, let it shine

Take this little light around the world

I am going to let it shine
Let it shine all the time, let it shine

GOD'S LOVE IS SO WONDERFUL

God's love is so wonderful (3)
O wonderful love
So high you can't get over it
So deep you can't get under it
So wide you can't get around it. Oh wonderful love
The love of God sweet and wonderful (3)
Oh, oh wonderful love (2)
Higher than the sky
Deeper than the ocean
Wider than the universe, Oh oh wonderful love (2)
