IEC 61850 Data Transmission: Reporting

Mechanism for reporting data changes Types of Report

Instantaneous Report generated when the data changes Delayed Report generated after expiry of a timer started when data first changes

Optional Features
Integrity (Timed) - Regular reporting irrespective of any changes On Demand (General Interrogation) - Client interrogates server to get latest report

Data in report defined by a Data Set (Named Variable List)

19

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

19

IEC 61850 Data Transmission: GOOSE Transmission principle

High speed peer-to-peer communication Multicasted
All IED belonging to the multicast address will decode the message simultaneously Decoding is by hardware, multicast address is by system configuration

Repeated in order to cope with

A temporary failure of an IED (example: queue overflow) or of the communication (example: re-configuration after a failure) The restart of a subscribing IED so that it can re-initialize its automation sequence However there is no guarantee that the message has been received

Prioritized:
This is used by the switches (IEEE 801.2Q) and by the application

20

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

20

IEC 61850 Data Transmission: GOOSE Repetition Principle

The standard does not define the repetition interval
Initial repetition is typically few ms (burst) in order to maximize the probability to achieve fast automation after a short temporary failure Asymptotic repetition is typically a few seconds in order to re-start the full system behavior (i.e. automation) within that time frame

The message has a time allowed to live parameter

Used to inform the receiver when the next message is supposed to arrive The receiver is able to detect the failure of the publisher and eventually start a fall-back algorithm

When a message is repeated then the sequence number is incremented All devices sending GOOSE messages are continuing to send the message with a long cycle time, even if no status/value change has occurred.
This ensures that devices that have been activated recently will know the current status values of their peer devices. Facilitates integrity checks of the wiring path.
21 > IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar 21

IEC 61850 Data Transmission: GOOSE Receiving GOOSEs

Upon GOOSE reception, the receiver will normally execute a logic combination or sequence The GOOSE messages contain information that allow the receiving device to know that a status has changed and the time of the last status change. The time of the last status change allows a receiving device to set local timers relating to a given event. The receiver will receive the repetitions of GOOSE and possibly ignore them in its application processing
MiCOM devices only process the message if a change is detected.

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

22

IEC 61850 Data Transmission: Data Sets

A DATA-SET is
ordered group of ObjectReferences of DATA or DataAttributes (called the data set members), organized as a single collection for the convenience of the client membership and order of the ObjectReferences in a DATASET shall be known to both the client and the server only the name of the DATA-SET and the current values of the referenced DATA or DataAttributes need to be transmitted permits more efficient use of the communications bandwidth.

23

IEC 61850 Data Transmission: Data Sets

Data sets are used by various services:

Data polling Reports Logging (not supported in MiCOM) GOOSE

Data sets can be

Fixed Configurable Dynamic (not supported in MiCOM)

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

24

Interoperability

Interchangeability

Interoperability

The ability for IEDs from one or several manufacturers to exchange information and to use the information for their own functions is one of the objectives of IEC 61850.

Others are

Free Configuration

and

Long Term Stability.

Interchangeability, the possibility to replace one device from one

manufacturer by another device from a second manufacturer without the need of engineering adaptation is the long-term objective. IEC 61850 Edition 2 is not going to solve this expectation from customer side.

31

Report Buffering

Two types of report buffering: Unbuffered and Buffered Behaviour of Reporting during communication loss
Unbuffered
Reports generated during communication loss are discarded Sequence of Event (SoE) reporting not guaranteed

Buffered
Report generated during communications loss are preserved (buffered) Buffered reports sent to client on reconnection Guarantees SoE reporting Not included in Phase I

32

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

32

Reporting of Phase II & III

Unbuffered Report Control Blocks

a maximum of 16 URCBs, located in System/LLN0

Buffered Report Control Blocks

A maximum of 8, located in System/LLN0 only 1 client can subscribe to each BRCB

33

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

33

GOOSE Implementation of Phase II & III

Multiple GOOSE Control Blocks according to each product (typically 8 off)

each publishes a separate GOOSE message

GOOSE message can contain any configurable data set

must fit into 1 Ethernet message frame (<1500 bytes)

GOOSE inputs still map onto 32 boolean virtual inputs

34

> IEC 61850 Enhancements on MiCOM Px3x and Px4x series - February/March 2009 - Webinar

34

Phase II & III Implementation of Data Sets

Data sets are now configurable by the user
Any number can be created in any LN Any data object or attribute from the entire data model (except control block attributes) can be published in any data set Uses the IED Configurator

Easy point & click interface to select data set members Data sets must be located in the same Logical Node as the control block that uses them (usually LLN0) Advantages
Tailor made to the system No project specific report enable/disable from client Improves communication efficiency Import of defined datasets from SCE of any vendor
