the Difference Lesson Plan Outline GOALS Illinois Learning Goal: 8.A.1b Solve simple number sentences (e.g., 5 - = 2). 8.C.1 Describe the basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) orally, in writing and using concrete materials and drawings. Instructional Goal(s) for Lesson/Unit: Students will be able to determine how many objects are left when some are taken away. Specific Objectives for Lesson/Unit: Students will be able to subtract and write the difference of a given equation. Possible Connections to Other Subjects: None MATERIALS Materials/Resources: Bowling set, paper bags, counters, self-stick notes, construction paper strips, scissors, worksheet Technology: None INTRODUCTION Introduction (Lead-In): I will ask the students what they know about taking away. As a class, we will come up with an example problem. I will then transition into stations. Step-By-Step Procedures and Learning Activities: I will give a quick explanation of each station prior to assigning students to stations. I will assign students to three different stationsThe difference is in the bag, cut away, and bowling. The difference is in the bag: Students will each receive a set of bags (5) with a subtraction expression on each. Counters will be inside of the bag to represent the difference. For example, 5-2 will be written on the bag and 3 counters will be inside the bag. Using more counters, the child works out each subtraction, copies the expression from the bag on a self-stick note, writes = and the difference, and fastens the note on the bag. The child looks inside to check the answer.

Cut away: Each student will receive strips of construction paper with a certain number of sections. The number of sections they need to cut off will be written on the back. After cutting off the given number of sections, they are to write an equation in two ways on the back such as 4 take away 2 is 2 and 4-2=2. Bowling: Students will first count how many bowling pins they start with. After they bowl, they will come up with a subtraction sentence and find the difference. Closure: I will ask students what they learned about taking away and write it on a poster board. I will discuss how taking away is used in their everyday lives. Assessment: I will assess the students through informal assessments (walking around each station as well as questioning students). Also, students will complete a worksheet that includes finding the difference of a certain number of objects. ADAPTATIONS AND EXTENSIONS Adaptations: There are different ways of finding the difference at each station so that students can learn in different ways. Extensions: I will challenge all students to write a subtraction sentence as the next lesson involves taking away situations that must be shown with a subtraction sentence. Linkage to Home and Community: I will show students how taking away is used in their everyday lives. For example: cooking with their parent(s), eating, shopping, etc.
