Plan Outline GOALS Illinois Learning Goal: 12.E.1a Identify components and describe diverse features of the Earths land, water and atmospheric systems. Archdiocese standard: Physical ScienceDescribes the effects of forces in nature Instructional Goal(s) for Lesson/Unit: Students will become familiar with different forces of nature. Specific Objectives for Lesson/Unit: Students will be able to identify different storms (e.g.: tornado, thunderstorm, hurricane). Students will draw a picture of a kind of storm. Possible Connections to Other Subjects: Art MATERIALS Materials/Resources: Two 2-liter soda bottles Food coloring Glitter Sandbox National Geographic video Anchor Chart Worksheet Technology: PowerPoint, video INTRODUCTION Introduction (Lead-In): I will introduce storms to the students using a PowerPoint with a picture of each storm and give a brief explanation of each. After each storm is introduced, students will buddy buzz with a partner for about thirty seconds and share with each other something they know about storms. Step-By-Step Procedures and Learning Activities: I will assign students to three different stationstornado, thunderstorm, and hurricane.

I will lead the tornado station and Ms. Duvic will lead the hurricane station. Students will watch the thunderstorm video on their own. First stationtornado: Students will watch a hands-on tornado made out of two 2-liter soda bottles. One bottle is filled with water, food coloring, and glitter, while the other is empty. They will be connected together. To create the tornado, the bottle must be swirled in a circle. The teacher at the assigned station will show the students how a tornado works. Students will each be given a turn to swirl the bottle themselves. Second stationthunderstorm: Students will watch a National Geographic video on thunderstorms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_MG__53wsM Third stationhurricanes: Students will perform a hands-on experience and see how hurricanes damage much of the land, people, cars, etc. They will shake the sandbox which will be filled with sand, water, and different objects. They will be able to see the effects of a hurricane. Closure: After the groups have completed each station, we will come together and complete an anchor chart. I will ask students what they know about each type of storm. As a class, they will decide what picture belongs with each type of storm. Assessment: Students will return to their seats and complete a worksheet that asks students to draw one kind of storm. I will assess them after they complete the worksheet with the following rubric. Rubric: 4-Draws multiple parts of the storm and labels them; Also identifies storm type 3-Draw the storm and identify the type of storm 2-Draw the storm but does not identify type 1-Draws only one part of the storm
