Introduction to integers worksheet

Key Lesson Elements What is the Teacher Doing?
Do Now (3-5 minutes):

What are the Students Doing?

Order of operations review (10+10) 5 3 + 4 * 2 Lets look back at our order of operations Now lets write the day and the objective Wednesday 10/24/12 Apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction to represent integers on a number line
I Do Input (1-2 Key teaching points): Check for Understanding:

The students are completing the do now at a voice level zero, looking back at their notes for guidance

Students are taking notes at a voice level zero and questioning the material

Whole number is a number that is not a decimal or fraction. What

Integers are some examples? What is an integer? Integers are like whole numbers, but they also include negative numbers ... but still no fractions or decimals allowed! We do- integer and their opposites worksheet: write the opposite of each integer 1a. 4 the opposite is -4 (show on number line). 1b -7 the opposite is 7 (show on number line) Give students 2 minutes to independently complete 1c-2d.
We Do Guided Practice: Check for Understanding:

One student is the integer man and is moving up and down the number line. The rest of the class is observing how much he/she moves to get Now we are going to play a game called integer man! Starting with the answers. Students are at a level 1 during the think pair share and are problem 1 with the adding integers with different signs. Choose a looking back at their notes for guidance student to represent integer man! Have class complete problems 13 on the adding integers with different signs worksheet. Place the homemade number line on the back wall. In a think pair share at a voice level one have students answer problems 4-6 and then use integer man. Then share as a group by cold calling You Do Independent Practice: Students are independently at a voice level zero completing problems Check for Understanding: 1b-2d after observing the example Have student independently complete problems 1b-2d after modeling how to complete number 1a. Complete the problem on page 3-6 individually and then in a think pair share Think Pair Share 3a-6c (this will help them with the 2 homework problems) On the introduction to integers worksheet complete example 1, 4, and 10. The rest will be for homework
Exit Ticket (aligned to lesson objective) or assessment:

33 degrees above zero 6+(-3)=

Students are completing the exit ticket at a voice level zero

Integers -17+9=
