Julia - She is Winstons lover, a beautiful dark-haired girl working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Julia enjoys sex, and has had affairs with many Party members. Big Brother haunts Winston through the telescreens Mr. Charrington - An old man who runs a secondhand store in the prole district. He seems to share Winstons interest in the past. He also seems to support Winstons rebellion against the Party and his relationship with Julia, since he rents Winston a room without a telescreen in which to carry out his affair. He is a member of the Thought Police. Syme - An intelligent man who works with Winston at the Ministry of Truth. Syme specializes in language. He is working on a new edition of the Newspeak dictionary. Winston believes Syme is too intelligent to stay in the Partys favor. Parsons - A fat, obnoxious, and dull Party member who lives near Winston and works at the Ministry of Truth. He has wife and a group of suspicious, children who are members of the Junior Spies. Emmanuel Goldstein Never appears in the novel just said to be there. He is said to be is the legendary leader of the Brotherhood. The Party describes him as the most dangerous man in Oceania.

Brotherhood- The group of people who revolt against the party who include Goldstein. Also, Winston would like to join them against the party. 3. Oceania - One of the three totalitarian superpowers that rule the world using censorship and terror. Mr. Charringtons rented room - Winston and Julias secret hideaway where they come to make love and hide from the telescreens and watch of the Party. Ministry of Love - A rehabilitation center which uses torture and brainwashing technique in order to completely conform its prisoners into the thinking and beliefs of the party. 4. First Winston writes in his diary for the first time about the proles, newspeak, and his hate for the party. That is when he writes, down with big brother, multiple times.(19) Then Mrs. Parsons asks him to fix her sink while he is still writing in his book. Then while at her house he gets accused of a traitor by her children (20). Winston then goes to work in the ministry of truth, where during lunch he meets up with a coworker/friend, Syme. (45) Syme expresses he great knowledge of their new language, newspeak (46). Parsons then comes by and sits with Winston while apologizing for his children but then describes how proud he is of them (50). He then goes home and records the memory of his last sexual encounter, which was with a prole prostitute in his diary (58). Winston explains that sex is banned for pleasure because the party doesnt want anybody to express themselves but only to produce more members for the party Winston writes in his diary, that if there was ever to be a revolution it would have to be from the proles because they are the only ones free enough(63) Winston goes through the proles and tries to get some information of the past from an old man (71). He goes back to the secondhand store where he bought his diary and talks to Mr.Charrington, where he is shown a private room with no telescreen above the store (83). On his way home he see the brown haired girl and thinks she is part of the secret police. Winston thinks about smashing her head but just keeps walking. At work, Winston helps the brown haired girl up from falling and as he does she slides a note in his hand. The note consist of the words I love you (90). Winston and the girl manage to contact eachother and organize a time to meet in the woods(99).

When they are together they share long conversations and find out her name is Julia. During the time they are together they have sex. They then leave each other and plan to do it again. Winston rents Mr. Charrington room above the store where he and Julie may have their affairs. Winston and Julia speak about the brotherhood and big brother; and Julia does not want to go against the party but just to make herself happy and enjoy pleasure (113). OBrien makes contact with Winston, and Winston and Julia meet him at his house.(140) OBrien tells Winston and Julia about the Brotherhood and sends them the book (141). One mourning troops march in their hideout and arrest Julia and Winston. Soon to find out there was a telescreen behind the picture in the room and Mr.Charrington was part of the thought police. They are both thrown in the ministry of love, where they are tortured till they confess their love for Big Brother (186). As Winston is tortured by OBrien he soon falls for his traps and listens to what he is told to stop the pain. After some time, Winston is transferred to a more comfortable room and the torture eases. He tries to make himself to believe what the party tells him. But as Winston still doesnt love Big brother he is sent to room 101(234). In room 101 he is threated with his biggest fear, rats. Where he then betrays Julia (236). Winston, now free, sits at the Chestnut Tree Caf thinking to himself and sadden of the thought of Julia but soon rejoices when he views a picture a of Big Brother(245).

5. WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH (26). Freedom is the Freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows (69). You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him; you must love him. (211). He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother (245). 6. The work was written to show the possible effect of a totalitarian government and how dangerous it can be. An insight of how a controlling government can lead to no freedom or any individualism. Some of the most important passages could be the quote, freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows. Compared to when OBrien tortures Winston and makes him think that his four fingers are really five. From that now that four is not four freedom is not freedom.

7. The structure of the novel is represented in third person limited, where the readers can only see Winstons actions and thoughts but also others actions. the style of the novel is put together to represent the meaning of the book as a whole because using third person limited gives a small view of only part of the society and the meaning of the book is how only few rule and the rest are under their control. Concluding that the small part of society that is seen in Winstons view is compared to the few people who rule them. 8. The significant problems of the novel is that the state is under totalitarian government control and if we are not careful, we can be taken under control and lose all freedom.
