Mental Math (3-5 minutes): Counting up by 2s starting at 1, odd numbers to 50 Counting back by 2s starting at 50, even numbers Sequential Gradual Release Model: Yesterday we worked to find all the ways to show the numbers 7 and 12 in name collection boxes. Today we are going to add onto these name collection boxes by naming these numbers in even more ways! Besides addition and subtraction number sentences, there are many other ways to rename numbers! Show students anchor chart of renaming possibilities: I Do I Do/ We Do/ You Do What Are the Students Doing? Students count up and backwards to 50 by 2s. Modifications/Accommodations Date: 3.13.13

Let them know that other students will use their name collection box to help them better understand numbers, so its important that everything in their boxes are correct. We Do response. Students are given 7 minutes to fill up the name collection box with as many equivalent names as possible. Assist groups that are confused; pull a group based on the exit ticket the previous day and have that group working to create one name collection box with me on the carpet if needed. Add hardest working group to nice work section, let students know I will be looking for hardest workers ahead of time.
