History of Arakan-Rohingya
Rohingyas have been living in Arakan from time immemorial. They are a people with distinct culture and civilization of their own. But the military regime of Myanmar (Burma) took away their citizenship in 1982 and become victims of political oppression, economic exploitation and cultural slavery in their ancestral land-Arakan. This includes severe restrictions on freedom of movement; various forms of extortion and arbitrary taxation; land confiscation and forced evictions; restricted access to medical care, food and adequate housing; forced labor; restrictions on marriages. As a consequence, thousands have fled to neighboring countries, in turn creating complex humanitarian situation in the region. Rohingya population which once stood, 3 million has shrunk to 1 million due to large scale persecution through ethnic cleansing and genocidal action. It began with the beginning of the 20th century. Particularly, since 1937, when Burma was separated from British India, the soil of Arakan has frequently drenched with the blood of the Rohingyas which caused innumerable exodus of Rohingyas in the wake of innumerable operations led against the Rohingyas out of which the Pogrom of 1942, Dragon King Operations 1978 and the Operation of 1991/1992 are the most horrific genocidal operation of the World. Doctors without borders consider them among the groups to likely to become extinct. The UN considers them the most persecuted people of the World.
June 2013
We, Rohingyas urge the UN and EU to intervene in the matter on ground of humanitarianism for the purpose of preventing further death, killing, rape and destruction of the Rohingya and to urgently send UN Peace Keeping Force to Arakan.
