Purpose: The purpose of my research is as follows. As a new teacher in the upcoming year and with new common core and evolving global market, how can I integrate a variety of concepts that support cultural literacy? I want to understand how I can incorporate these new cultural literacy techniques in my classroom and give my students the support they need to be culturally literate. Oftentimes I feel that in my classroom we are doing so many hands on activities based on the cannon that we don't always give cultural learning its due. To get our students ready for college and the world in which they will inherit, it is critical that they are able to look at their own culture as well as others with understanding, tolerance and acceptance in order to move forward as a society. I want to take preliminary steps in the middle school years to prepare my students for high school and college and push their higher order thinking skills while in terms of learning and appreciating other cultures.
