The joint workshop on Aquacultural Engineering and Simulation, sponsored by the US National Research Council (NRC) and the Committee for Scientific and Scholarly Communication with the United States (SSCUS), Academia Sinica, Taiwan, was held at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, in January of 1985. The workshop came at a time when the world aquaculture community has begun to realize that, in the development of commercial aquaculture, engineering and management technology must be accorded increasingly important roles in order that available biological knowledge can be utilized to produce profits for investors. As in any emerging fields of endeavor, there is difficulty in defining the new field of Aquacultural Engineering, and this was reflected in the diversity of papers presented at the workshop. As the Co-chairmen of the Workshop and Co-editors of the workshop proceedings, we wish to call attention to the wide spectrum of topics under which the presented papers were grouped, and the overlapping of papers in different topics. We wish to take particular note of these features of the workshop papers in the hope that the diversity of activity in Aquacultural En~neering will persist, even expand, in the foreseeable future. The commercialization of aquaculture has made it increasingly clear that engineering technology, in its broadest sense, is the required catalyst that ensures the efficiency in aquaculture production, which can simply be viewed as an interaction of capital and biological knowledge. These proceedings are but a first attempt by a group of interested participants to yield an incomplete glimpse of aquacultural engineering activities in areas covered by the two sponsoring agencies.
